I think it’s dangerously complacent to say that we aren’t going to see a rollback on women’s rights so therefore views like Ann’s are harmless. Women’s rights are under sustained and aggressive assault by the extreme TRA agenda picking up a lot of misguided mainstream support. Women’s access to abortions is threatened in the US now in a way that I think wouldn’t have been imagined previously - the religious right don’t have a grip on UK politics in the same way, but it’s still so important to stand up for women and protect those freedoms. Ann came across well in the house but to tacitly endorse someone who would happily trample opportunities for equality and bodily autonomy for women by crowning them winner in this particular year would have been far more horrifying to me than giving that victory to a drag queen who was inconsistent and flawed in his approach but at least not dogmatically committed to destroying women’s rights. I’d far rather neither one of them had come close to winning - on a personal level, I liked them both and enjoyed watching them. Philosophically, a win for Ann would have been as disgraceful as a win for Andrew or Daniel.

mirialis · 03/02/2018 14:19

Sorry but no way am I going to take a CBB vote for Ann that seriously - if that is dangerously complacent in your view, there's not much I can do about that.

futuristic1 · 03/02/2018 14:36

I was pleased Shane won because we need to stop harking back to the 'past' and the 'good old days' that Ann seems to symbolise for many.

It's very disapppointing that the organisers couldn't find a woman who could actually take on Ann and still remain popular with the female voting audience.

It seems that anybody who questioned her views within and without the house was deemed some sort of granny-hater.

I can't think of one woman that other women would have allowed to represent modern women, stand up to Ann's throwbackish views and still vote for her.

If women are unhappy that a drag queen wins in the year of the woman - there's only one place to look for the reasons why - change comes from within and all that jazz.

Women would never have liked and supported any woman who could have stood up to the anti-woman that is Ann.

Only women can answer for that one

thebewilderness · 03/02/2018 14:52

futuristic1, do you see a tiny flaw in your assumption that only women voted?

@futuristic1 I think perhaps organisers expected Amanda to be the strong (older) female housemate that would stand up to Anne and challenge her old fashioned beliefs. Instead Amanda sat eating chocolate biscuits with her in the bedroom and agreed to most of what she said.

Even Wayne (who was probably earmarked as another one to call Anne out on her beliefs) didn't want to rock the boat. And yet, when Shane J showed passion for his beliefs, Amanda and Wayne wrapped him over the knuckles and told him not to act like a schoolchild....

AnneEyhtMeyer · 03/02/2018 15:20

Thanks Chilly! I've set it to record on +1! Flowers

Ruth Davidson - she would do it with intelligence and humour.

picklemepopcorn · 03/02/2018 16:01

I think the difference is people seeing Ann as homophobic and misogynistic because she disapproves of all women short lists and sees homosexual relationships as 'less than' marriage. Again, I disagree, but I can see how it is reasonable to hold those beliefs. They really are very recent to have been so completely endorsed.

I bet it took longer than 20 years for female doctors to go from shocking to mainstream and unremarkable, ditto women having the vote.

picklemepopcorn · 03/02/2018 16:01

What about woman's hour presenters? They'd do well.

MrsJayy · 03/02/2018 16:02

Ruth Davidson is a bit too busy for cbb but a tory leader who is in a same sex relationship would blow Annes mind 😂

mirialis · 03/02/2018 16:11

Ann is full of praise for Ruth Davidson. As she said in an interview which I quoted from on an earlier thread "Do you think were no gays at Westminster? That I don't have gay friends?"

I think Ruth's approach would be good too, as she warns against the throwing around of the bigot label and being on the receiving end of boos from an LGTB crowd.

Jess's dress was only £30, and is now £20 in the sale! I may buy one, ready for when I get the figure of a 30 year old model.

Apparently she likes Jonny! They'd make a good match, i reckon.

mirialis · 03/02/2018 16:48

Finally watched Ann's exit interview - I didn't think Emma was that bad in terms of showing a dislike for Ann (Ann did have a point about the interview technique though)! I think she was just desperate for Ann to acknowledge she's a lonely old cat lady to make sense of why Ann can hold the views she does and have so many votes. And she did hug Ann when she first came out, but Ann's tolerance of hugging is very limited and anyone can see that. That may be due to upbringing or living alone (though I bet she hugs her great nieces and nephews) but it's possibly more due to sensory issues (as with the intolerance of noise).

Hello flower. Sorry just back from a loooooooooooong shift. You posted ages ago. Sad

Sadly I don't think the nightie exists as such. I mean it does but I haven't got it because some shite has bought it

I googled 1950s nightie. Up the image popped. I'd look lovely in it if I lost 5 stone and waxed my legs

@thebewilderness

futuristic1, do you see a tiny flaw in your assumption that only women voted?

Fair point.
In my defence, I believe it's widely accepted that women probably make up the largest part of the voting audience - although no data has been released on voting demographics - afaik.

The BBC did an article in June 2017 on audience demographics using BARB data, which showed the following:

70% of the Big Brother's audience is female

The age group the show is most popular with is 45-54 year olds

The show is considerably more popular with lower middle class and working class viewers than it is with middle or upper middle class viewers

Nearly a quarter of viewers live in the north of England, which is the region that most loves BB. 19% are in London. Scotland (14%) and Wales (7%) care far less keen on Big Brother

www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-40171096

Obviously, having a predominantly female audience doesn't automatically translate into most voters being female but I think it's more likely and probably significant that voters usually vote women out first.

Even allowing that the male voters may be acting selflessly and have no interest in looking at glamourous ladies or find their personalities wanting - it does raise the suspicion that women may be voting against women they don't like, for whatever reasons and not voting against men for whatever reasons.

But, that's just my opinion ;-)

picklemepopcorn · 03/02/2018 17:01

Aw, that's a shame Sheldon! I'd look fab too. I was hoping the voluminous ness ness ness meant I wouldn't have to lose 5 stone, though. Hey ho! Thank you!

If Andrew goes into IACGMOOH I shall vote for him for every challenge.

He'd be eating that much Australian cock, balls and bumholes that Mylittleshourtney would no longer be a challenge to his straight male sensibilities.

And who wouldn't want to see him getting buried alive with his fellow cockroach friends for company?

What about Jo Brand? I think she would have been brilliant!

She stood up to those smug twats on HIGNFY pretty well recently...

Really? Amazing Confused

No Annightie here. Have made risotto with asparagus and chicken, white wine and shallots and then finished with parsley and lemon jesst ZEST! It's a heck of a lot of stirring, but as a BB watcher that's not too much of a problem.
