Well didn't think we'd fill the first thread but we've hung in there with mascots and hopes of some 'ass on ice' action...so on with the donkeys on ice show! Smile

soup how is the scoring worked out ? Just watching the Americans which were amazing!

soupforbrains · 11/02/2018 20:06

I agree. But also while I dislike Donna I would just like to say that it's actually quite difficult to be lifted and do it well.

The female celebs on DOI always get a bit of a raw deal on the 'dodge doesn't actually do anything' side of things.

soupforbrains · 11/02/2018 20:09

Um. So bubbly this is the short programme so there is a specific list of moves that they have to do. But there is room in each move for the difficulty you can choose to do.

Each move is then allocated a technical difficulty score. As you skate judges judge How Well each of your listed elements has been done.

There is then a presentation score which is a total of several smaller scores for things like musicality, expression, basic skating skills, entertainment etc.

These Canadians are the probably the best in the world btw.

Jaygee61 · 11/02/2018 20:12

Fair enough about the lifts but the judges pointed out that it’s week 6 and she still isn’t doing any solo skating.

soupforbrains · 11/02/2018 20:14

I should add that there is also a list of elements you have to complete in the free programmes too but they are slightly more open to interpretation.

For example. A requirement in te short programme might be a twizzle step sequence featuring at least twizzle a with at least one on each foot, one in each direction of rotation and two must be directly linked (I.e. no steps in between) and the pattern of the step sequence on the ice must be in a circular pattern and cover at least 1/3 or the ice.

Whereas in the free programme you have to do a step sequence with at least 5 connected steps ( any steps, any pattern)

Bubblysqueak · 11/02/2018 20:15

Thank you soup that makes sense. The Canadians were amazing !

soupforbrains · 11/02/2018 20:15

jay yeah. Thing is, I think she probably could do it but just isn't. I think it's probably a combo of her being scared and Mark not wanting to show how very very slow she probably is alone.

soupforbrains · 11/02/2018 20:16

bubbly I love Carolina Kostner btw. She's probs not going to win any golds but she is one of the most enjoyable skaters to watch for me.

But just wait until they show Evgenia Medvedova. GrinGrinGrin

CakeNinja · 12/02/2018 08:38

Watched it this morning. I have to say, if they didn’t put 38492 adverts into a 2 hour show, they would able to let the judges say more than 2 sentences each. All you hear Holly/Phil saying, is “and very quickly Ashley...” because they have to go to yet another break. The judges are the people with the professional advice that’s going to help them progress yet they are barely given airtime Confused
And yes, thought Donna should have gone last night based on the fact Lemar has a lot more confidence on the ice, takes the (limited) advice and uses it to improve his next performance. He does a LOT of solo skating, Donna just clings on for dear life and smiles.

LollipopViolet · 12/02/2018 09:50

Just thought I'd say, as someone who actually skates, I’d kill for the training these celebs are getting Envy My proud moment skating was when me and a coach tried a spiral lift and he said I seemed to just know what to do, and had decent lines Grin

Loved Jake and Alex this week, Antony had a routine that could’ve been amazing but just fell flat for me.

soupforbrains · 12/02/2018 11:59

Yes Lollipop the hours and hours of ice time with the calibre of coaching teams they get is phenomenal isn't it. I've always half-dreamed of how nice that would be.

lettingthedaysgoby · 12/02/2018 15:11

Watching the Olympic coverage, they had Chris Dean on and showed this - brilliant!

84CharingCrossRoad · 12/02/2018 15:51

Now watching the Russian ice pair. They look like Usain Bolt on Ice compared to Antony Cotton....

soupforbrains · 12/02/2018 16:27

Letting bet they didn't sow the whole thing! even the very best skaters get a bit dull to watch when they do the same circuit 5 times Grin

Charing you'd have to hope they did though really wouldn't you!

iklboo · 12/02/2018 18:01

Gosh, I thought I'd tuned into Anthony Cotton's training practice by accident Grin

callmeadoctor · 17/02/2018 00:22

A little something for us all to enjoy Grin

John curry and Robin between them revolutionised the men's format. Prior to them the music behind men's choreography was a bit like the music in women's gymnastics, just something that was there while they skated and got their 'tricks' done. Maybe they would time one or two big things to coincide with a nice big cymbals crash or something but they didn't really choreograph TO the music. The John Curry cane along and things started to change, followed by Robin who took it further. The fact that the two of them dominated and took back to back Olympic golds meant that others took on their way of thinking and the whole sport evolved. Torville and Dean took inspiration from them too.

It's such a shame that the U.K. lost its love for figure skating, we have such heritage. Robin and Chris are still both highly respected and exception choreographers who still get asked to work with the world's top skaters. But we have fewer and fewer kids actually involved in and excelling in the sport. 😢

Robin's outfit in that first one always cracks me up.

soupforbrains · 17/02/2018 08:33

If you REALLY want a laugh while watching some actually good skating take a look at this though, Evgeni Plushenko was a king of the sport but even he knows how to have fun...

I just came to post the sex bomb video and see I got beaten to it!!!! Grin

LollipopViolet · 17/02/2018 14:50

Anyone seen the video that’s gone on Facebook?

They’ve got to do what I know as a midline step sequence - full length of the Ice, steps, turns etc all to be performed in unison. Oh, and no holding on allowed!

This is what I want to see!!!!

As an aside, my coach made us do basic figures today - it’s so hard!
