The sharp stone was put under her spine to break it when the weights got heavy enough Sad

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/10/2017 22:19

They put the person being pressed on top of a block of some kind so when the weights press down it breaks their spine.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/10/2017 22:20

Was the stone to break her spine whilst she was being 'pressed', maybe?

I genuinely feel sick.

Devastating to think that similarly terrible, torturous killings of innocent people are going on in the world today.

Elendon · 21/10/2017 22:24

They hung them till they just passed out then released them. Then they eviscerated them whilst half in stupor and did the amputations and then the beheading. Usually there were dogs for the testicles.

Pressing to death did not take such a short time though. People who spectated watched whilst eating the slow death.

It is thought that those who had status were given the choice of drugs to take to ease the passage. Most refused because they wanted a clear mind.

I'm now tempted to go online and watch the next episode. I may not be able to watch it next Saturday.

That was excellent viewing, gruesome and dare I say it, illuminating on that time in history. Shakespeare was still alive.

SquareWord · 21/10/2017 22:26

I found it irritating. I realise that they are trying to make things look authentic and brightly lit interiors would not be accurate but I struggled to see what was going on in some scenes!

Elendon · 21/10/2017 22:26

Ate whilst watching that was meant to be.

We had already eaten before the programme!

EdgarAllanPO · 21/10/2017 22:26

Thought that nettle
James was quite openly homosexual so I'm glad the BBC have shown this side of him.

GherkinSnatch · 21/10/2017 22:28

I felt a bit sick 🤢

The woman was executed by crushing - particularly brutal method designed to try and get them to change their mind about entering a plea.

Optimist1 · 21/10/2017 22:37

So far so good (if a bit gruesome in parts) - I liked all the plotting and subterfuge. Yuckiest part for me was when the subtitles during the putting his head on a pike scene just said SQUELCHING. Indeed. Sad

Elendon · 21/10/2017 22:37

James was openly bi sexual. His wife Anne of Denmark had several children, stillborns and miscarriages.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 21/10/2017 22:41

"Devastating to think that similarly terrible, torturous killings of innocent people are going on in the world today."

That was my thought too. Sad.

LouiseBrooks · 21/10/2017 22:51

Gory but brilliant. What a foul time to live in.

I thought the opening scenes looked beautiful, and were heartstopping when the authorities were searching for the priests.

IhaveChillyToes · 21/10/2017 23:00

I thought it was really good

DH is now watching on iplayer

DonkeyOil · 21/10/2017 23:13

The house was said to be Baddesley Clinton in Warwickshire, but the outside shots were definitely not filmed there. Wonder why they didn't use the actual house, which is a NT property, and has been used before for filming?

Nettletheelf · 21/10/2017 23:26

It’s East Riddlesden Hall, which is conveniently close to Keighley where lots of the scenes were shot (derelict mill which also pops up in Peaky Blinders and Sharpe, amongst other things).

IhaveChillyToes · 21/10/2017 23:33

Perhaps @DonkeyOil it was too expensive to hire or they wanted to change it by taking down outside lamps or cctv or other 21st century things before filming

IhaveChillyToes · 21/10/2017 23:43

Sorry @DonkeyOil just googled and realised my post wrong BlushBlushBlush

DonkeyOil · 22/10/2017 01:29

Ah, no need for Blush, Chilly! Makes financial sense that they would use a nearby property, Nettle.

fortifiedwithtea · 22/10/2017 02:39

I got as far as the priest being stretched at the Tower of London. Turned off, I can't stomach anymore. I won't watch anymore espisodes too gory for me .

troodiedoo · 22/10/2017 08:12

It was rather gory. Unfortunate consequence of having to compete with Netflix, amazon etc I suppose. Along with putting them all on I player. Will try and resist watching more till next week.

Can I request no spoilers on this thread please?

Elendon · 22/10/2017 08:19

Can I request no spoilers on this thread please?

Sorry, but this made me Smile. It's the gunpowder plot. I think everyone knows the outcome!

LoniceraJaponica · 22/10/2017 08:22

I thought it was a bit slow. How can they stretch this to 3 episodes without being boring?

I thought I recognised the house Nettle. I have been there a few times.

battenbergbutterfly · 22/10/2017 08:28

I turned off after the first execution as when I saw them bring the priest out I knew there would be terrible things to come. Loved the suspense when they were looking for the priests but the gory stuff was just too much.
