Last thread was maxed out.

Everyone disappeared...

Couldn't find ongoing 'live' comments, so all welcome here.
(Strictly no shenanigans on kitchen islands or dining tables, though).

It's a nice town but I not give-my-ex-husband-suicide-drugs-and-manipulate-his-wife-to-leave-him-so-I-can-live-there nice............(and I know because I live there!)

I mean it's hardly Monaco or The Hamptons....

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/10/2017 15:15

It's not grotty though by any stretch of the imagination.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 04/10/2017 16:14

NameChangr678,

Apologies if I'm confusing you with another poster, but is it you that lives near the actual location houses used? Who posted the RL pics on the last thread, joking that the driveway without Anna brandishing a massive wine glass seemed plain wrong? Grin

RhiannonOHara · 04/10/2017 16:14

I don't think the town looks grotty but I do think it looks depressing.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 04/10/2017 16:19

"She thought all that time that that her fight was Simon and Kate. First the affair. The money. Then them coming back and causing problems. She thought she had problems then.

But that was just the warning and NOW she has problems as her son is missing."

Very true, Niki.

@mslumley i also thought the ending was good

guess s3 will be trying to find him

TheCowWentMoo · 04/10/2017 16:53

Tbh I didn't even have sympathy for tom in the end, why shouldn't his dad give up work to look after him? He spent so much time not talking to Gemma this season and in the end it was because she had PND? She spent this entire series running around after him but he didn't even once suggest his problem was he thought she didn't love him? It was very frustrating

SingingTunelessly · 04/10/2017 16:58

Wow I didn't expect that ending. Quite powerful and packed a real punch to me anyway. Sad

Beingrippedoff · 04/10/2017 16:59

I thought it was a fitting ending too. Hope Tom goes up to Edinburgh to find the neighbour whom I'm sure would offer him the sanctuary he needs.
Highly improbable Gemma would have agreed to aid a suicide as she would have lost her career over that (plus likely gone to prison)

Ah sorry that wasn't me! I guess a few of us must live there! Haha, so true, that driveway being empty doesn't seem right...

MadamMinacious · 04/10/2017 17:05

Was quite hoping that ex-neighbour Anna was going to arrive on a mercy mission from Edinburgh.

I wonder if that's where he is?

Yep, the ending wasn't great at all. I was glad he didn't kill himself though.

They were so self-obsessed - that poor boy.

NikiBabe · 04/10/2017 17:52

Me too. I started thinking you're nearly 16 grow the fuck up. Lots of children have working parents, needs must. He had a good life, a nice home, Gemma tried her best. In series 1 you would see her sitting on his bed, tucking him in asking if he was ok, etc. You saw simon ducking out of things with Tom to go and fuck kate but Tom gets the hump with Gemma for having PND ffs.

RhiannonOHara · 04/10/2017 18:04

I don't disagree, but another way to read it is that Simon has worked very effectively on Tom to drum into him ideas about Gemma working too much and not being around for him enough. Just like I imagine he banged on about the PND in a way that made Tom feel it was Gemma's fault and something he could criticise her for.

KathyBeale · 04/10/2017 18:06

I thought this whole series was quietly and insidiously anti-women, actually. Gemma's been punished pretty thoroughly for having PND and having a job, and having her husband cheat on her, hasn't she? None of the women really had a good time, I'd say. Possibly with the exception of Gemma's rubbish mate at the surgery (Roz?) Even the girl who Tom raped (or attempted to rape) would have had to face him at school every day because his exclusion was overturned.

NikiBabe · 04/10/2017 18:21

I agree and what is even more appalling is on the last thread so many women on here were saying it was all Gemma's fault and she deserved it.

Nice of Tom to blame and judge his mum for having PND when he is out sexually assaulting class mates or beating them up.

RustyLeaf · 04/10/2017 18:23

yes interesting point Kathy ... and I get what you mean. But the men? Drippy teacher ... the patsy barely acknowledged. Simon ... adulterer who loses everything. But yes, the men move around (even Tom physically leaves at the end) and sexy neighbour opposite has a lot of fun. Meanwhile Gemma is stuck in her GP surgery wondering if she is a good mother. I also thought the PND storyline strange. Plus as soon as her stupid, horrible man disappears, her whole life goes down the toilet ...

Hitchin. The inverted snobs on MN Biscuit. The point was it was set in 'middle England'. Thats what was so fun.... in a way!

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 04/10/2017 18:29

TheCowWentMoo,
No reason at all that his Dad shouldn't have been the one to give up work to look after him, or that Tom should consider that second best to Gemma doing so. Pretty unremarkable for a child these days.

But as a teen already pissed off that your Mother's dating your teacher (so finding time for him outside her long working hours), whilst giving mixed messages to you about your Dad and simultaneously being back shagging him [and the horrors of hearing rough sex as evidence of it Shock ], Gemma's the handy one to lash out at for anything/everything. And far from blameless, tbh.

Not to mention the strain of Anna, his only confidante, leaving/ Isabel incident/ fight with best mate/ school grief etc. has got him so stressed he's seeing Dr Sian. He's not exactly thinking straight, so logic and fairness are out.

Expect would seem all the more raw, having witnessed your toddler half-sister doted upon, whilst your manipulative Father tells you that, by contrast, your Mother had made it clear she wished she'd never had you, slyly forgetting the bit about those being only temporary feelings whilst very ill, and likely has secretly felt that way ever since.
(I'm surprised he didn't also plant some lingering doubts in Tom's mind about whether Gemma had speeded up Grandma's demise ...).

Agree with you, though, a heck of a lot has been frustrating. We need a MN Q&A with Mike Bartlett.

I think it was quite blatantly anti -women! Remember during one of the flashbacks Simon arrives home saying " Hi, breadwinner home!" as Gemma was making the dinner. She was a GP, earning good money FFS.
And PND as a deep dark secret to be ashamed of? Fuck off.

RustyLeaf · 04/10/2017 18:39

One more thing. As soon as I saw the sensationalist sex scenes - I knew it was written by a man.

(Not always though - I must say Hanif Kureshi wrote the screenplay for 'The Mother' which was entirely brilliant and very incisive re. women).

LadyinCement · 04/10/2017 18:46

I thought Tom was quite babyish for 15. He seemed more like a 10-year-old to me.

I agree with pp that a good ending would have had Suranne standing in the drive and at the very end Simon coming out and putting his arm round her...

I think I actually disliked every single character. Did anyone have any redeeming features?

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 04/10/2017 18:48

Ha! Every MNer in Hitchin should loiter in their driveways clutching Wine Grin

You should all cash in and start a Dr Foster guided walking tour:

"Here, ladies and gentleman... ... is the very spot where Drunk Gemma was captured on Slimon's mobile.".

"Whilst here......is where stood the coffee truck, location of Sian's tip-off to Kate about Gemma's house being up for rent."

Laughable. The horrible, manipulative demented bitch got what was coming to her.

RustyLeaf · 04/10/2017 18:51

Gemma did care about her patients ...

Simon Shock ? putting his arm around her as an ending Hmm.

Still, it puts Eastenders to shame, back to that now Sad

LadyinCement · 04/10/2017 18:51

Dm lived in that neck of the woods and used to say, "Go to Hitchin and come back scratchin." I think it was actually a reference to the people there having a few too many airs and graces compared with mil's town.

RustyLeaf · 04/10/2017 18:53

haha Zuzu.

One thing I did like about series it was very "set" in modern places ... Travelodges, shopping centre "squares", GP surgeries, etc.
