On on Sunday night. Anyone interested?

I haven't read the book but I do like a bit of Cumberbatch.

indeed are you watching the same thing? Deep? Nah too bloody shallow, no investment in any of the characters and he didn't look beleivable at all even when crying in the school office. I thought it was going to be about a missing child who would turn up years later. Oh well he's got another baby so that's that? That's how it felt!

zukiecat · 24/09/2017 22:37

Well what a heap of rubbish that was

I have no idea what I just watched, it made no sense at all

I can’t stand Benedict Cumberpatch, and also as a Scottish person I hate that fake sounding Scottish accent, which is a shame as I love Brave, but Kelly McDonald sounds so fake in it

Agree with the poster too who mentioned David Tennant, he’s the worst!

ineedamoreadultieradult · 24/09/2017 22:39

It didn't make me care about any of the characters at all.

LightastheBreeze · 24/09/2017 22:39

It was like the end was tagged on so it had an end.

Janus · 24/09/2017 22:40

Has anyone read the book (I haven't!), just wondered if it gave you any more info?
I got that she was pregnant and they both saw the boy.
What was the best fiens's death all about? At some point I thought he was involved in the disappearance but don't think he was now. Was his 'joke book' the paper he wrote for the prime minister?

user1495832265 · 24/09/2017 22:41

Utter pile of shit.

Tanfastic · 24/09/2017 22:41

Couldn't finish watching it....so dull.

Featherstep · 24/09/2017 22:41

I didn't like the book but thought this was ok. Most people who haven't read it would be clueless...
Charles is the other child in time, he's reverted to a state of suspended childhood in a way like Kate is suspended in time.
The pub scene is about Cumberbatch's character 'seeing' his mother the day she told his dad she is pregnant - there is some weird time travel situation here; also taps into idea of a child as a sort of spirit free of time.
The PM had a bizarre obsession with Charles but I agree this was random and the TV version has decided not to go there.

JustDanceAddict · 24/09/2017 22:42

The book has to be better, surely.

unfortunateevents · 24/09/2017 22:42

I loved it, but I had read the book, think it might have been mightily confusing otherwise.

Featherstep · 24/09/2017 22:44

The ending looks tagged on but makes the key point that a child's 'spirit' is always there and a lost child can come back in unexpected ways.

That's what I think anyway...

Mayhemmumma · 24/09/2017 22:45

I'd thought they portrayed the anguish quite well, 3 years on but no answer. The fact they split, that they both 'see' her seemed really real to me. No high drama but a million unanswered questions.

So emotional! (Albeit the best friend bit writing the dodgy paper for parliament was an odd addition)

iammargesimpson · 24/09/2017 22:45

Well I loved it, had to concentrate and not miss a single thing to keep up with the storyline, but I thought it was really really good, great acting by both main characters.

Janus · 24/09/2017 22:46

So we have to decide ourselves if Kate is still alive but would assume so if both parents keep 'seeing' her then?
I quite enjoyed it!

MadameJosephine · 24/09/2017 22:48

I must have been watching something else because I loved it! It wasn't the usual missing kid story with police and searches but more about her parents dealing with the loss of Kate. The time travel bit was a bit confusing, I can imagine it being easier to deal with in a book though. When 'imaginary' Kate took her fathers hand on his way into the maternity ward I had tears pouring down my face 😭

Janus · 24/09/2017 22:49

I did too Madame!

TheSpottedZebra · 24/09/2017 22:50

That was utter drivel. I read the book, eons ago, and they just selected a few odd pages and filmed those, I think.

The characters were much better-developed in the book. Especially the women, which is no surprise to anyone, I am sure. The chap's mum had more of a feature, and the wife of the deaded minister was much much more, prominent. In the book, she was a (some kind of...) physicist, who was working on theories about time and space. Whereas in the tv thingy, she was dutiful and had a bell and a crew neck jumper.

mummag · 24/09/2017 22:52

I did NOT get that at all. So confusing. Just what?

iammargesimpson · 24/09/2017 22:53

Yy madame, that was very moving when she took his hand near the end

Norugratsatall · 24/09/2017 22:58

I enjoyed it too. I think it was very much meant to b a comment on loss and coping as oppose to plot driven. I found it quite difficult to watch in parts. I'm not really a Cumberbatch fan but thought he was excellent.

JaneEyre70 · 24/09/2017 23:00

I loved it. And am feeling quite inexplicably moved by it. Grief can do funny things to a person, it takes you to a place where your sanity is no longer what it was and you're no longer living on quite the same planet as everyone else but life goes on. Not read the book though. I thought BC was outstanding, he's an amazing actor.

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 24/09/2017 23:04

Well that's 90 minutes wasted for no good reason ...... very random, just a good cast in search of a plot.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 24/09/2017 23:04

The best actor was the little girl. Yes that did make me cry when she took his hand at the end. She should have been going in with daddy to meet her new brother or sister. But it was so disjointed and weird and Kelly MacDonald wasn't very good.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 24/09/2017 23:15

Never read the book and had no idea what to expect, but I could see within 10 mins that this was the type of story that doesn't concern itself with answers. Not expecting any kind of resolution made it quite enjoyable. Very moving, and I thought both leads were excellent.

All that government stuff was baffling though. Were they trying to outlaw childhood or something? WTF?

Davros · 24/09/2017 23:28

I liked it and I'm pleased it wasn't a load of procedural stuff, not that I don't enjoy that too
