Liking it.
Casting excellent.

the other reason is probably based in snobbery.

He prob thought that Strike was so desperate for money due to his debts that he would simply find what John wanted him to find.

hollyisalovelyname · 04/09/2017 07:23

If the police thought it was suicide why try and frame it on the half brother?
Why not let sleeping dogs lie ?
I don't buy it.
I had read the book and thought the same when I had finished it.
Obviously I am plot driven unlike ohyesiam.

TizzyDongue · 04/09/2017 07:36

Because he wanted the brother to:

Not inherit
Be punished

As it stood (as a suicide) the second wouldn't happen

Clawdy · 04/09/2017 10:07

The will business with the half-brother was very confusing. Thought the money was going to the ancient mother? (who looked more like her great-grandmother. )

WishingCarrot · 04/09/2017 11:31

Clawdy I think originally the Will was going to the mother. But she then changed the will to her half brother - but no-one knew where the Will was until strike found it hidden under the bag lining. That's what strike was looking for in the bedroom.

BestIsWest · 04/09/2017 11:47

I preferred the book. I liked the casting and the look of it was spot on but it was a bit slow in places.

I found the second book plain weird so it will be interesting to see what they do with that. Book 3 is much better.

CeeBeeBee · 04/09/2017 11:55

Clawdy, Lula was adopted.

I really enjoyed it and I've not read the books. I like Tom Burke who was the main reason why I watched it. He's David Burke's son, who played Watson to Jeremy Brett's Sherlock.

Clawdy · 04/09/2017 14:19

I know she was adopted, but Sian Phillips is 84, so a bit elderly to have a young daughter, even an adopted one. Rather odd casting.

WishingCarrot · 04/09/2017 15:26

The fragility of the mother was part of the story though. The uncle knew / had his suspicions but didn't want his dying sister to know.

John and Charlie probably were / would have been 40/45ish. With Lula 30ish. So, say 40 when she give birth. Which is still possible. They were wealthy, with help, and then she adopted at say mid-50 maybe to give her new focus during her grief at losing her son.

The80sweregreat · 04/09/2017 15:57

Charlie would have been the same age as Strike, if he had lived. they were briefly at school together, thats why john bristow asked him to look into it all. Strike wasnt there that long himself as his mum moved them all around a lot.

Lula's adopted mum said she was 73 as she was born in 1944, but the first book is set in 2010, so even younger. The mum did look a lot older than she should have done.

The80sweregreat · 04/09/2017 16:00

Book 2 is weird, its completely different and all the characters are really nasty and horrible. Book 3 is a lot better.
i cant wait for the new one next year - Leathel white.

Also, i dont think that his criminal mate, appears until book 2 ( or even book 3) so that was wrong. funny how he calls Cormoran 'Bunson'
he has lots of nicknames.

CoolCarrie · 04/09/2017 16:05

Tom Burke played David Tennent son in Casanova a few years ago, and his mum is Anna Calder Marshall who played Cathy in the 70s film version of Wuthering Heights, with the stunning Timothy Dalton as Heathcliff.

jimijack · 04/09/2017 16:22

Was it set in America in the book? (Not read it) it seems to me to be British trying to be American, wooden and a weak story line, I got to half way through the first episode and turned it off.
Should I persevere, does it improve? You all seem to think it's good, I feel like I didn't give it a chance.

I think I'm spoiled, Broadchurch and top of the lake were so good, I'm spoiled with great quality programs, can't tolerate rubbish.

Should I give it another go?

MsGameandWatching · 04/09/2017 16:33

I found book 2 hard going as well. I'm just starting 3 and hoping will be better. I do love CS as a character though, I am ex army and that side of things in the books really resonates for me.

Oblomov17 · 04/09/2017 16:42

Only watched episode 1, currently. Haven't read books. Bit of a Tom Burke fan from Musketeers, War and Peace.
Enjoying it so far.

Clayhead · 04/09/2017 16:54

Have loved Tom Burke since State of Play, also love Holliday Grainger so thought I'd give this a go, not my normal type of thing. Loved it!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/09/2017 17:04

Catching up on episode 2 so haven't read back yet! Just noticed it was produced by JK Rowling.

PlasticPatty · 04/09/2017 17:05

I loved it.

The80sweregreat · 04/09/2017 18:02

The working relationship between Strike and Robin really moves the books along - i think if they were not so likeable ( and Robin is more normal in the books than on the screen) i dont think i would bother with them. He is a real character too, i warmed to him and i want them both to succeed.( I know i am over invested in people that dont exist!!)
i hope book 4 isnt a let down.

HelenaDove · 04/09/2017 18:56

Didnt realize that Tom Burke is David Burkes son. Anna Calder Marshall had a guest appearance in the Jeremy Brett as Sherlock feature length ITV adaptation........The Eligible Bachelor.

Hepzibar · 04/09/2017 19:38

I really liked it. Thought the casting was excellent (matched my imagination anyway). Robin and Strike are likeable characters and Holly and Tom played them perfectly.

The locations and set were perfect.

It included enough of the book to be credible. Didn't realise they were also doing book 2 until the sneaky glimpse at the end.

Also loved the opening credits.

I liked it and will be watching next week for the Silkworm.

minoandolphin · 04/09/2017 22:51

Loved the books, loved the adaptation. The only thing that took me out of the story a bit was Strike asking for 'a pint' in the pub. Nothing makes you realise you're watching a BBC programme than someone asking for a generic pint (of what? Lager? Cider? Ale? Which brand?); which I have never known anyone do in real life (and I worked in a bar some years) - especially when he has a particular favourite in the books. Not really a criticism of the show though it's just irritating...like the 555- numbers they always use on American shows. Or when they make up a search engine instead of using a real one.

Slartybartfast · 05/09/2017 00:22

Tom Burke was great in war and peace. Cannot understand why the opening credits were set up to look like the 60 or 70s?

The80sweregreat · 05/09/2017 06:23

In the Books Strike was partial to a pint of Doom Bar - it was mentioned about 5 or 6 times in book one.
