Hi all

As the last thread has all but totally filled up, I've started this new one.

Bit shallow - but do you think the Wives are allowed cosmetics? I got the impression that make up is banned but they do all look very polished.

OP posts:

The Chanel advert with "This is a mans world" song

A tech advert with babies involved

7Days · 30/07/2017 23:22

Oh yes written by Atwood herself . It will be fucking grim but clever. I love her

brokenshoes · 30/07/2017 23:23

^ thank you re the advert. I had them on mute.

viques · 30/07/2017 23:26

strumpetplunket if that is true then I am a bit cheered up. I realise she must have had a lot of input into this and presumably approved the additions, I just don't want them to see it as a long term project, after all in the original it was made pretty clear that this was not the case although Offreds story was never resolved.

feelingdizzy · 30/07/2017 23:26

Have loved, loved this series ,and the discussion here. Will look forward to season 2.

Batteredoldchesterfield · 30/07/2017 23:26

Ah cheers 7days. Been a while since I've watched the film (which is also brilliant, in a different way, but just as horrific!)

I have loved this and am planning on buying the book again...damn my sporadic decluttering!

7Days · 30/07/2017 23:26

And you know Goldie those are perfectly ordinary ads, most of us wouldn't think twice normally. At first I was pissed off at the insensitive juxtaposition but now I think yeah. Our society is pretty extreme too when it comes to propaganda. And it's a credit to the programme that it moves us to a different space and we get a different perspective on our own reality.

TeaStory · 30/07/2017 23:26

I broke down in relief when Moira wiped away the dirt to reveal "Ontario".

I think that at the refugee centre was the first time in a long time that anyone had asked Moira what she wanted to do, and it was overwhelming for her.

Interesting that Ofglen, who decided the regime was so much better than her old life and wanted to stay in her role, was the first to say, "no".

TizzyDongue · 30/07/2017 23:27

That was some episode. First one that I've been close to tears (heart of stone me!). Real feeling of the women fighting back in this I thought - even the nasty and evil Serena with the way she spoke to Fred (who we assume only was sorry for fear of losing his hand).

I've the book here - finally came up on the library waiting list.

SomethingOnce · 30/07/2017 23:30

I can't help feeling a number of brands have been punk'd with the advertising Grin

bubblesquirrel · 30/07/2017 23:30

Did anyone else find the interaction between Offglen and Offred ("shut up" "no YOU shut up") amusing and almost like a preclude to offglen's behaviour at the stoning, using that language is rebellion in itself.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 30/07/2017 23:31

I bawled through half of that and still going. Trying not to wake up DH and it just makes the sobs louder!!

Hard hard watching and fucking awesome. Winning my favourite tv adaptation of a book hands down (sorry not sorry warren!)

AnyFucker · 30/07/2017 23:35

I am stunned, and wet cheeked, after that

Tremendous tv.

Elendon · 30/07/2017 23:35

Brilliant.

I suspect we will get to see June's mum in series two.

My heart broke into a million pieces when June was crying for Hannah - it was gut wrenchingly awful to watch.

But when Moira saw she was in Ontario, my heart was put back together. What a bitter sweet moment and a great hug when Moira and June's husband met. Praise be.

(((((((HUGS to ALL))))))))

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 30/07/2017 23:36

Ah I can't even read this thread without going again!! I'll be back in the morning once I've calmed down 😭😭

redphonebox · 30/07/2017 23:39

I've followed these threads but this is the first I've posted. Thanks to everyone who's contributed, I've really enjoyed reading through.

The series has really affected me and made me reflect on what other women are going through elsewhere in the world. How do we change this? I totally agree with the PP upthread that the battle is not won in this country yet, but relatively speaking we are so lucky. How do we help these other women? Is there anywhere to get involved/give money? I wouldn't even know where to start.

The scene with Hannah had me in bits tonight Sad

AnyFucker · 30/07/2017 23:40

From the moment I read the novel at least two decades ago, I have been boring people about my most favourite novel of all time

Finally, they are listening Smile

TheWitchAndTrevor · 30/07/2017 23:44

I Cried through most of it tonight, and found myself taking in a breath when Hannah was brought out.

Absolutely brilliant tv series.

Would like to thank all you, for these threads. I've loved reading them.Wine

The second series is just to far away thoughSad

Elendon · 30/07/2017 23:49

Alias Grace is also a cracking read. Is that going to be a series too? Parts of it are incredibly bleak.

The Handmaid's Tale is an outstanding book and this series has been a fantastic adaptation. As has these threads on MN.

Goodnight all.

SomethingOnce · 30/07/2017 23:49

I wonder if Hannah is destined to be a handmaid because she was the child of an adulterous relationship?

ittooshallpass · 30/07/2017 23:52

Haven't managed to watch the final episode yet but will tomorrow. I read the book many moons ago as a 20-something and thought it was great, but my mind didn't/ couldn't go to the depths of horror that the tv series has taken me to.

I can't even watch Broadchurch... I am a complete wuss when it comes to anything upsetting on tv. But THT has drawn me in every week. The colours, the music, everything has just been mesmerising.

Powerful, powerful messaging. Ironic that even though the book is decades old the messages are all slap, bang up to date.

ittooshallpass · 30/07/2017 23:54

This thread has been one of the best on MN. Thank you all for some fantastic thoughts, observations and discussions.

deadringer · 30/07/2017 23:56

That was amazing. Praise be.

noblegiraffe · 30/07/2017 23:57

Aunt Lydia was crying as she sentenced Janine to death.

I was half-expecting Offred to hand her the stone and say 'you do it' and Aunt Lydia be unable to stone her either, but knowing Aunt Lydia, she probably would.

NormaDesmondsEyebrows · 30/07/2017 23:59

Oh god I think I cried through most of that. I found the Moira bits the most teary, she is (god, they all are) such a fabulous actress. The difference between strong, ballsy Moira and the lost puppy in Canada was striking. And the utter confusion and disbelief at the basic kindness there.

LOVED the rebellion. Very believable, actually. And Aunt Lydia. She is unravelling. She's a true believer and genuinely sees her 'girls' as wayward sluts that she brought into the light. The tear when she was telling them to get on with stoning her special pet, Janine. Gulp.

The ending was perfect, right back to the book and just gorgeously shot. The colours and background in this have been mesmerising.

I love telly, seriously love it, but I can't remember ever being as hooked on something as I am on this. I've watched every episode at leat three times and I'm staying up to watch this one again now.
