Anyone watching? Seems a bit ropey so far but I'm still quite gripped.

OP posts:
TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 27/07/2017 12:56

I watched part 3 last night and it was so much better than the first two; lots of drama and intrigue (what on earth was Paul involved in?)! Shame, many may have given up by now.
In the first two episodes I had given up caring what Helen and her friend's childhood trauma was. Was no need to eke it out so much.

And yes, terrible bump!

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/07/2017 11:44

Seen part 2. So that's finished now?

So is no 3&4 a new story?

Optimist1 · 01/08/2017 23:07

Very, very disappointing IMO. So many inconsistencies! When Helen was in the bath and someone was stealing Paul's iPad there were two police officers outside supposedly keeping her under surveillance. She was prancing about Manchester on her due date single-handedly investigating multiple murders.

thisismadness77 · 01/08/2017 23:17

I'm confused by the ending! It got so complicated. Evidenced by Helen And the DCI having to fill each other in on "bits they didn't get". I still didn't really get it...

user1486915549 · 02/08/2017 08:27

I didn't get it.
Who stole Paul's iPad ?
What was the " Victoria " file on the iPad that she couldn't unlock ?
Was Paul really a nearly-son-in-law of that criminal bloke , and how did criminal blokes daughter die ?
Help ! I didn't even fall asleep and miss a bit !!

mizu · 02/08/2017 08:28

Disappointing last episode, too rushed and I couldn't believe that she would have been able to walk around that estate so heavily pregnant asking questions, not very feasible.

mizu · 02/08/2017 08:31

And who shot Theo? Was it the guy who was with the gangster tall man whose office was in that run down building?

thisismadness77 · 02/08/2017 08:49

I was hoping you would have answers not more questions haha!!

thisismadness77 · 02/08/2017 08:49

Yes it was him Mizo. Couldn't say why though....

Fiderer · 02/08/2017 09:47

Didn't realise it was the last one. Heh?

Maybe the sidekick killed Theo as his boss was all "You reap what you sow" & he didn't know that the boys hadn't killed Paul. So his revenge for Paul's death.

The other boys were killed by whatever crook had set up Paul's killing. There were 2 of them, masked, & the sidekick alone, unmasked.

Dunno, bits of it were so unbelievable. Though Adam being involved was a twist.

fussychica · 02/08/2017 10:01

Utter shite, like almost every British thriller series. Totally unrealistic, huge plot holes and we never did find out anything about the Victoria file.
At least we know she wasn't going to call the baby AdamGrin, though actually I'm not sure we knew what sex it was or I may have missed that.

MrsPorth · 02/08/2017 12:59

Spoilers

I downloaded and watched all 4 last night. 3 and 4 much better than 1 and 2, I didn't guess the outcome and was shocked that Sarah was complicit. I think they're hoping for a recommission -the historic abuse storyline was unfinished, paternity was not established, and it was unclear why Frank's sidekick shot Theo (who may have survived I suppose).

I watched it because I really like Jessica Gunning - she was great in the film Pride. I was disappointed that she played a minor role. I'd have preferred her in the lead, although she looks a bit young for it I guess. And I don't suppose that a plump woman would have been cast as the love interest of two attractive detectives, sadly.

There were too many cliches. Tortured cop, heavy rain, gay dad, quipping pathologist, affair, shady taxi driver, unplanned pregnancy. We've seen it all before.

I had to google Linda to find out whether the actress is Lorraine Chase's DD. I was convinced!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/08/2017 13:02

BBC's finest production it ain't.

FoofFighter · 02/08/2017 13:15

@MrsPorth if you're a fan of the actress check out Fortitude, quite a good role in that for her and she's not a copper

Littlewhistle · 03/08/2017 12:28

I thought the drug dealers were shot because the businessman's daughter has died because of drugs. He said she had died but didn't say how.

Agree that parts of it were totally ridiculous. Two police officers from another area can just rock up and suddenly be involved in all areas of a crime, and as for Helen prancing about with the most ludicrous bump, asking questions of all and sundry baddies..... words fail me.

If they do commission another series I won't waste my time watching it.

Vq1970 · 05/08/2017 17:11

I really like Mark Billingham's books and particularly Tom Thorne. This series was a bastardised version of two of his books, completely mixed up, different order of events and not as much information. The books make everything clear, unlike that pile of shite.

reuset · 05/08/2017 21:59

Against advice and better judgement I decided to give this a try. Grin Just awful.

I know nothing about proper police procedure, but I'm guessing she (main character whose name I've already forgotten) wasn't following it.

Also couldn't take Super Hans seriously.

Hels20 · 05/08/2017 22:16

VQ - so what happened? Tom was on to Adam, Adam found out (how?) and so set up Tom to be killed. The gang boys were recruited by Adam to make it look like that woman was shot at and then accidentally crashed into Tom. But they didn't cause anything. Why were they then killed? Because Tom was friends with Frank who wanted to avenge his death, even though it wasn't their fault? Is that the plot?

thisismadness77 · 05/08/2017 22:26

Tom = Paul yes? ;)

SnickersWasAHorse · 06/08/2017 00:35

Well I just sat and watched all 4 episodes.
Can I be the loan voice that liked it?
Yes it wasn't brilliant but it was interesting. I did think it was odd how they could just go strolling into the other forces investigation and then take over. The paperwork alone would be a nightmare.

Inkanta · 06/08/2017 06:41

Snickers - I liked it too! Smile

Vq1970 · 06/08/2017 11:03

I don't recall Adam being part of it at all, if I remember correctly, it was his work mate and he was knocking everyone off. The books are the other way round to the tv series. The first book is all about Helen and Paul getting killed, tied up with his workmate.

The second book Helen has had the baby and is now living with Tom Thorne who is a main character in Mark Billingams books. They decided to go away for a weekend leaving the little boy with her dad. Whilst away, she sees on the news what has happened in her old home town and goes there with Tom Thorne to be with her friend. Which is the story from the first two episodes of the tv series. It was a complete mix up of the story.

The books are worth reading, all of Mark Billinghams books are worth reading.

Vq1970 · 06/08/2017 11:04

Work mate - partner at work. When the big boss wanted to talk to Helen at the funeral, the partner was with her looking shifty and the big boss asked him to give them some space.

reuset · 06/08/2017 13:06

I might have a look at the books, Vq. I haven't read a decent crime thriller in ages.
Does the question of parentage come up?

Vq1970 · 06/08/2017 15:59

reuset yes it does, Adam is in the background as a potential father for the baby and is referred to in the second book as well when she's with Tom.

I'd recommend reading the books from the beginning - Amazon will give you the order. You really get to know Tom Thorne and follow his life, along with his friend Phil Hendricks the pathologist who, whilst he is gay as per the tv series, he's a bald, tattooed, pierced Mancunian and not the flamboyant character of the tv series.
