No exact UK release date yet, but is airing in July.

I'm a bit disappointed the new series is Sydney-based: the remote NZ setting added so much atmosphere in the original...but Elisabeth Moss can do no wrong in my view!

Featuring Gwendoline Christie and Nicole Kidman, too.

Well, I'll try and erase from my mind her connection with that 'organisation', and carry on admiring her talent as an individual regardless.

Not sure, I'm afraid, where you can see Top Of The Lake (original) without paying, but I'm sure someone knowledgeable can advise?

Warning to anyone wanting to watch the original, ahead of TOTL2:
On no account bother with the bootleg YouTube episodes: someone's clearly tried (pointlessly) to bypass copyright law by altering the actors' voices...they all sound like they've inhaled helium!
Which totally ruins the dark, edgy atmosphere and will destroy your experience.

It was one of the most gripping series I've ever watched. I usually don't get "gripped" by programmes that others do but this one really had me glued to the TV. I'm jealous of you getting to watch it for the first time!

Sarah it's been on my vast watch list for a while but only just got round to it. Give it a go! The scenery is stunning and adds to the atmosphere - it's odd but yes gripping.

NEWS UPDATE:

Well, sort of.
Still can't track down exact BBC2 transmission dates for TOTL2, other than "July" ...if anyone else discovers them, please do let us know here.

However, I've just spotted that they are re-running all 6 eps of Series 1 (hooray!), BBC2, 11.05 pm, from Friday 7th July.

Again, the publicity dept. seem to be playing silly buggers, by only (as yet, anyway) stating eps 1 & 2 are airing on 7th & 8th July...no mention of whether the remaining 4 eps will be similarly coupled up on wkends/ shown as double episodes/ spread over weekdays...

Watching Elisabeth Moss be so brilliant in The Handmaid's Tale, currently, is making me all the more impatient for TOTL2 to begin! Smile

Planning to watch it mainly for EM after seeing her in Handmaid's Tale. She is amazing.

Apparently, seeing the original isn't necessary...Series 2 works as a standalone (more or less):

" You guys have disclosed very little about the second season of Top of the Lake. What can you say about it? "

Hakan Kousetta, producer:
"We don’t want to ruin it for the audience. It’s a [season] that you can watch without having seen [season] one. It will be better if you have, because certain parts of the story carry over. I think it’s a more accessible show [than season one], even though there is debate about that. But I just met with our French broadcasters and one of them said it’s so much darker than the first one, but another said oh no, it’s not. It’s still very much a Jane Campion piece of work, and you can tell that instantaneously. She has carried on the themes of motherhood, which was a big part of the first [season] and is explored in much more depth in the second one. It’s about what it means to be a mother in the 21st century in both the Western and non-Western sense."

"It's a traditional story, a murder investigation, and then there’s also a family drama, and then they come crashing together. It’s very complex and challenging and brilliantly rendered."

TONIGHT: TOTL SERIES 1 REPEATS, BBC2

Just a quick reminder to anyone wanting to catch (or re-watch) the original (for free, though at a pretty late time! iPlayer'll come in handy).

BBC2, Tonight, Friday 7th July....Ep. 1: 11.05pm - 00.05am/ Ep. 2: 00.05am - 01.05am

Eps 3 & 4: same times next Fri, 14th July.

(Assume eps 5 & 6 are to air at same times Fri 21st, but the online BBC schedule doesn't extend that far ahead.
Still no word of when SERIES 2 starts...Grr).

Do feel free to comment on Series 1 here, if you like.
We may as well fill in the time somehow... Smile

BREAKING NEWS!!!

Hooray! Finally the UK transmission dates have been released:

Top Of The Lake 2: China Girl - begins Thursday 27th July, 9pm, BBC2.

Meanwhile, the repeats of TOTL 1 continue on BBC2, Fridays, 11.05pm - 00.05/ 00.05 - 01.05am (eps 3 & 4 tonight, the 14th July; eps 5 & the finale on the 21st July).
And on iPlayer for 3 wks...

Interested to hear opinions from anyone currently watching for the first time! What do you think so far?
