Question for the Book Fans...

I did the book for A Level. My Yr 13s (I don't teach English) have done it for A Level. There is debate at school about how Gilead is pronounced.

So, do you say Gilly-ad, or Gil-eed?

EBearhug · 08/06/2017 19:29

I say Gilly-ad.

UncontrolledImmigrant · 08/06/2017 19:31

It's gile-ad, like in the hymn there is a balm in gilead

UncontrolledImmigrant · 08/06/2017 19:32

Gilly-ad I mean

PacificDogwod · 08/06/2017 19:38

Yes, Gilly-ad here too.

Clawdy · 08/06/2017 19:52

Definitely Gilly -ad.

SuperFlyHigh · 08/06/2017 21:19

Gilly-ad!

EvilTwins · 08/06/2017 22:16

Same Smile

The A Level English teacher apparently pronounces it Gil-eed, and the A2 class is divided about it.

I did this face Confused when they mentioned even the possibility of a different way to say it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/06/2017 22:33

Another vote for Gilly-ad. The English teacher is many shades of wrong.

theredjellybean · 09/06/2017 05:33

Gilly ad...

waterlego6064 · 09/06/2017 09:11

Gilly-ad, definitely.

I'm absolutely loving this adaptation. So chilling, and the cast are fantastic.

I read a 'denofgeek' review of the first episode and laughed at this bit:

'...such a hot topic when it debuted in the US a month ago. For some reason over there, the notion of long fought-for civil rights achievements being reversed by a patriarchal despot with no respect for women struck a chord.'

😬

GavelRavel · 09/06/2017 15:16

It's definitely Gil eee add - they me toon it a few times in the latest episode.

Good interview with Elizabeth Moss on R4 Woman's Hour yesterday
here

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2017 21:21

Oh, thank you, the paper shop had run out of Guardians by the time I got there today.

Moanyoldcow · 10/06/2017 21:29

Very excited to find this thread! Read it for A-Levels 20 years ago and it was so affecting. Loving the series so far. I've forgotteb enough detail that any changes aren't affecting my enjoyment.

HappyFlappy · 10/06/2017 22:17

the hypocrisy of the Gilead theocracy. Eg low status man beaten to death for raping a woman, Commanders doing exactly that in the ceremonies

The death sentence is against the (claimed) rapist is not because of his offence against a woman - here rape was regarded as a much worse offence - it was against a MAN. Rape is the despoiling of another man's property, and potentially producing a child who will not be the child of the handmaid's owner.

Yjay is the great offence.

First world problem with me tonight!
Poldark, The Loch and The Handmaid's Tale are all on at 9.00!
Wtf should I do
Watch Poldark on TV, and The Handmaid's Tale on my iPad, with my headphones on , or vice versa, and hope The Loch might turn up on YouTube seems to be the only way, as we can't record here!
The cinematography of THT and Poldark as stunning.

BikeRunSki · 11/06/2017 19:21

CoolCarrie Poldark will be iPlayer later, Handmsud's Tale will be on 4OD.

AnyFucker · 11/06/2017 19:22

Claim to fame: Margaret Atwood once retweeted a comment I made Smile

SimonsPies · 11/06/2017 19:37

Was it pithy, AF?

AnyFucker · 11/06/2017 19:39

I don't remember if she added a comment, just that she retweeted.

Soubriquet · 11/06/2017 21:16

Anyone else hoping this tv program has a more concrete ending with the deviations they are doing?

Raspberriesaretheonlyfruit · 11/06/2017 21:23

Oh good grief....this is hideous.

What an amazing story.

Really not liking the flashbacks. They are a bit close to the bone.

snoopyokay · 11/06/2017 21:26

Really tense episode again! Wish I could watch the whole lot in one go!
