Anyone else planning on watching this at 9pm on channel 4?

OP posts:
AdalindSchade · 04/06/2017 21:23

Who were the women giving birth with the wives in attendance? Were they other wives?

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 21:27

Looks like the wife who can't have children is pretending to give birth whilst the real labour is happening upstairs

Is that right? I've never read the book. It's on it's way though

Ladytron11 · 04/06/2017 21:31

Why did she spit the cookie out?
I think it was a macaron

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 21:31

I don't know..guess we will have to wait for those in the know to get over here Grin

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 04/06/2017 21:37

Yes, it's the wife faking labour & now on the birthing stool.

DH is watching the concert in the other room. I am dipping in & out in the ad breaks.

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 21:37

Jeez that's heartbreaking.... even though they knew it was coming it's not by choice really is it?

They are raped until pregnant and then forced to hand their baby over

AdalindSchade · 04/06/2017 21:38

Oh god yes you're right
Hellish

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 04/06/2017 21:41

In the book it also makes clear that they aren't allowed any pain relief during labour, as it's thought to be harmful for the baby.

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 21:42

Oh god it gets worse... they have to breast feed their baby too?!

Mc180768 · 04/06/2017 21:46

Covering a myriad of cross cultural women's issues.

It is far more uncomfortable visibly, than it is reading text.

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 04/06/2017 21:48

Yes it's interesting. Very different visualising this to reading the book. Both good though. Just quite a different experience.

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 21:50

I bet MRA's come in their pants watching this

Women in their rightful place being obedient and subservient

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 04/06/2017 21:56

I dunno about the MRAs. Seems like only the high status men are "getting any" in Gilead, which would be a downer for all those sexually frustrated MRAs that resort to PUA techniques. I agree the subservience of the women would be jolly from their POV though.

QueenoftheAndals · 04/06/2017 21:57

I could barely watch the childbirth scene. It was heartbreaking, but even more heartbreaking to think that it happens all the time today...

Mc180768 · 04/06/2017 21:59

Philip Davies will be drawing up his next common's appearance on the back of this.

Rory Gilmour... cannot place her in amything other than an ivy league pleated skirt.

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 21:59

Does that mean the other Ofglen has been found out?

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 04/06/2017 22:00

I'm finding the level of interaction with Nick really jarring. It's too much, far too familiar compared to the book.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 04/06/2017 22:00

Also - Don't You Forget About Me?!?!?

JigglyTuff · 04/06/2017 22:01

What did the other woman say when Offred asked where her friend had gone?

Is it me or is the dialogue really mumbly? Blush

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 22:01

I found the scene in the hospital with the obviously bereaved and grieving mother quite distressing actually

Because you know that has happened and still happens.

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 22:02

She said "I am Ofglen"

I watch with subtitles

alabasterangel · 04/06/2017 22:02

brutally amazing. Angering actually. And makes me grateful for having my children at a time and in a place of freedom. It's fiction dangerously close to fact.

JigglyTuff · 04/06/2017 22:04

Thanks Soubriquet. I tried to turn subtitles on last week and they didn't work but I was in France.

Abra1d · 04/06/2017 22:04

What did the replacement handmaid say at the very end about what had happened to Ofglen?

Soubriquet · 04/06/2017 22:05

They said

"Has Ofglen moved post so..so soon"
"I am Ofglen"
