At the risk of deletion, does anyone want to point me towards "the British theory"? I know little about it but it's a very sad story, I would be pleased if there was a resolution. (NB Daily Mail links are unlikely to cut much ice.)

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 03/05/2017 21:46

I'm watching, I can't believe its been 10 years.

BonnesVacances · 03/05/2017 21:46

If I had a choice between holding it together and focussing on finding my child or falling apart I know which I'd do.

I'm always shocked at the lack of compassion parents are capable of showing towards other parents. I personally couldn't imagine anything worse than feeling responsible for anything bad that happened to my DC. That guilt would live with me for ever and that would be punishment enough. Why other parents feel that's not enough I'll never understand. Hmm

Beyond - thank you, will do :)

PossumInAPearTree · 03/05/2017 21:48

This guy doesn't seem quite the full ticket.

RedCrab · 03/05/2017 21:49

The British police theory is just that she was abducted by burglars, as oppose to the Portuguese police's theory that she died in the apartment and it was covered up. The programme has shown the Portuguese theory first and is now showing the British.

LineysRun · 03/05/2017 21:49

British theory - trio of local men, burglars

MaisyPops · 03/05/2017 21:49

thatdearoctopus I'm not saying anything about placing blame. Nobody is in a place to.

I'm literally just saying that when the awful news broke I feel there was very little focus on any of those adults leaving their children unattended like that.

The nastiness towards thr family came more in the aftermath from my memory & some of it was appalling.

However, We've got to separate opinions about case handling and how the press report things from people saying awful things about the parents. People should be able to ask questions about case handling and the reporting of things without being shut down (not saying you are. Just previous discussions get shut down if any questions are raised).

I do think that the background of the family made a difference to how it was presented and the amount of publicity they got.

expatinscotland · 03/05/2017 21:50

No, I'm watching GPs Behind Closed Doors on C5+1.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 03/05/2017 21:50

Ah I see thanks

LineysRun · 03/05/2017 21:50

Or the bookings manager at the resort

MaisyPops · 03/05/2017 21:51

expatinscotland
I've just watched that. Much more light hearted with a cuppa and mumsnet. Smile

VeraGrant · 03/05/2017 21:51

Not aimed at you in particular quiet, it's an argument I've heard a million times in relation to this case.

No one's asking you to care. But this is a pretty unique mystery/ tragedy and it's surely understandable that many people do still care. For some reason many folk seem to be inexplicably bitter about continued attempts to discover what happened to an innocent little girl. Why should parents be blamed for doing everything humanly possible to keep the search going? In many ways it would be easier for them to keep their heads below the parapet and stay out of view. The trolls rush to attack them every time they brave the press again.

But I doubt I or anyone else is going to convince them to stop spewing their bile. It's obviously fulfils some creepy needs they have.

Mrsmadevans · 03/05/2017 21:52

The cynic in me says that is to keep the money rolling in

DrDreReturns · 03/05/2017 21:52

I don't think either theory is credible tbh. A burglar wouldn't abduct a child imo.

FreeNiki · 03/05/2017 21:52

No, I'm watching GPs Behind Closed Doors on C5+1.

Expat my gp is in one of those series Grin

TattiePants · 03/05/2017 21:52

I'm watching too. We arrived in Luz a few hours after MM had gone missing so it's quite difficult to watch even 10 years on. Purely anecdotal, but to the pp who didn't feel the Mccanns showed enough emotion, we saw Kate about 5 days later and she looked completely broken.

BonnesVacances · 03/05/2017 21:52

I'm just saying that I don't know why I should care more about this particular (although incredibly tragic) case than about other unsolved crimes/tragedies

I think you're expected to care though and recognise that she is still someone's DD.

There are lots of attitudes on this that remind me of the Comic Relief one. ^Loads of children die of Malaria. Why should I care about this one more just because she's been on the telly?" Hmm

Oblomov17 · 03/05/2017 21:52

What a shit programme this is.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 03/05/2017 21:53

Plenty of killers in the past have courted the media. There was a documentary on itv a while ago called 'crocodile tears' that covered it.

The truth of the lie is quite an eye opening documentary.

VeraGrant · 03/05/2017 21:56

Courted the media for 10 years? How often has that happened?

That 'crocodile tears' programme wasn't people courting the media, it was them making TV appeals as directed by the police.

HelenaDove · 03/05/2017 21:56

Im not blaming the McCanns I think their daughter did go missing.

My problem is with the classist press.

On one of the docs about Karen Matthews the attitude was that they would view it with scepticism if (God forbid) a child from a housing estate went missing again.

But i doubt the attitude would be the same if (God forbid) another professionals child goes missing.

I hope ive explained that ok.
