Just looked up the English accent thing mentioned above (assumed MC was English 😱😱😱) and noticed that him and Vicky McClure were both born on 8th May, but a year apart. Weird!!

Ferrisday · 15/04/2017 19:28

He did, but she was involved in the linked investigation and she didn't stick by him when they were all trying to set him up- cow

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 15/04/2017 19:31

Oh yes.

Martin Compston is from Greenock and I adore him. I am from there, too, and can hear his accent slipping. It's better this series.

Don't know why it should matter : Broadchurch is full of people pretending to be from Dorset.

Please all watch Sweet Sixteen when you get a couple of hours.

Comedyusername · 15/04/2017 21:43

My first LTB - thanks Feral Smile

QueenieGoldstein · 15/04/2017 21:52

Jimmy is listed on the cast list for tomorrow so we should find out a bit more about who he is and whether there is any link to balaclava man.

FeralBeryl · 16/04/2017 00:53

Beans but the Broadchurch people don't sound Australian when they're doing their blag accents Grin I'm finding them rather convincing, especially Jodie Whittaker who is from Yorkshire.
Why they couldn't have let him keep his beautiful normal accent will haunt me possibly more than his death. Bloody love a proper Greenock twang.

I have nothing useful to add, so I'm just wandering through to say 'IT'S TONIGHT!!!'

As you were! 😂

Cary2012 · 16/04/2017 07:00

Yayy! no more sleeps until the next episode. Loved the Goggleboxers reactions to last week's ending. I'm like the one who said "If you want a drink or anything tell me now 'cos once this starts I'm not moving", I ignore the phone and just sit glued. Can't wait, let's hope Arnott pulls through, I've been fretting about him.

iwanttobemissmarple · 16/04/2017 07:11

We are going to family today & won't be home till around 11. Can't decide whether to watch it tonight (when I'll be shattered) or tomorrow.

Decisions decisions Grin

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 16/04/2017 07:37

God Feral , did you see that actual Australian guy in Prime Suspect 73 trying to do London? It was the most awful thing ever...

If I remember rightly, Arnott's backplot makes it essential that he is form somewhere very specific in the south of England. That's in series one but, what with everything being so complex , I have completely forgotten what, where, why. Odd, with all the other geographic vagueness, but that's why. I threaten vaguely dark actions against anyone who criticises my Martin, having followed him since about 2005.... he is the reason I watch (or was at first)

Adrian Dunbar's diction makes up for all of it! Smile

I love Line of Duty (and Broadchurch) because NOONE MUMBLES! It's lovely to hear David Tennant actually being Scottish, too : it annoyed me all the way through Doctor Who that he did English, when it matters not one bit to the character!

think everyone thinks anyone can do West Country : don't think Julie Hesmonhalgh's is very good

TheHiphopopotamus · 16/04/2017 08:43

Julie Hesmondhalgh's accent is terrible in Broadchurch, you're correct. But weirdly, it's the first thing she's been in, where she hasn't irritated the hell out of me.

I think some actors just can't do accents though. I suspect Vicky McClure may be one of those as I don't think I've ever seen her do a different accent, not even a perhaps more neutral accent. Whereas, I didn't realise Arnott was Scottish til someone pointed it out on last years thread.

CurriedEggs · 16/04/2017 08:52

Only just caught up now - great Sunday morning viewing Grin

Please tell me Arnott isn't dead??

Marmalade85 · 16/04/2017 09:37

Can't wait for tonight Grin

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 16/04/2017 09:44

Curried, if he's dead I may demand my licence fee back.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 16/04/2017 09:45

I imagine Vicky McClure's USP is her East Midlands accent and her creep , stary eyes

cherrytree63 · 16/04/2017 09:57

For anyone who hasn't seen series 1-3, Sainsburys has the box set for £13.
And TN was the ex wife in Run Fat Boy, and she definitely was capable of smiling then! Grin

TheHiphopopotamus · 16/04/2017 10:07

I think you might be right. It wasn't a put down, I actually like her accent, it's not one I hear very often. She's a brilliant actress and I'd rather someone do their actual accent all the time rather than attempt a not-very-good one which draws attention away from the performance.

I don't think we'll be seeing her in 'The Crown' anytime soon though Grin

Mrscaindingle · 16/04/2017 10:58

I agree with this and it's one (of the many) reasons I also like Peaky Blinders, although some of the attempts to do a Birmingham accent on there are woeful. That is coming back soon Grin and will fill the void for me left by Line of Duty and Broadchurch, I really don't want this series to end !

For some reason you very rarely see anything set in the Midlands.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 16/04/2017 11:01

This is what he said about his accent in an interview:

Well the part was written for a Londoner, so it wasn’t a conscious thing. I’m sure they would have let me probably stay Scottish but the part was written for a Londoner and it is my job to just make that happen. It can be quite full on because, as I said, I don’t come out of the accent, so I mean living for three months as an Englishman can after a while start to mess with your head a wee bit...at the same time, it can help you find the character a bit more. You find a change in yourself with an accent. For some reason I feel a bit like a smart arse when I talk in a middle-English, middle-London accent! It made some of my mumbo-jumbo police talk a bit easier to say for some reason… Well the part was written for a Londoner, so it wasn’t a conscious thing. But I find scripts can change a fair bit and so you have to learn to adapt very quickly so you have to have the accent at your beck and call. We had a couple great dialect coaches working with us but you couldn’t really have them at your side full time, so you have to learn to do things by yourself and it’s good in some ways as although it can get a bit stressed, at the same time, it can help you find the character a bit more.
