Just love behind the scenes shows like this.
Loving the laundry most so far. The sheer amount of underwear that apparently needs ironing ...!

Really impressed with the work ethic of the staff, I guess they really appreciate the opportunity. Not like us lazy Brits!Grin

Butkin1 · 07/03/2017 13:24

I loved the irony of the title considering we only saw foreign staff looking after foreign guests !

I was looking at my room service menu in a Qatar hotel last week. Caviar was the equivalent of 495 pounds - but it did come with blinis !

BelladiNotte · 08/03/2017 15:43

So what's with this uber rich not paying their bills, tho?
Me, I'd be holding those 'silver' samsonite cases to ransome until the bill was paid.
Actually, I've got a fantasy of impounding the whole bloody pantechnicon of luggage until it was.Angry
Seems that's what 'they' do?
Time for a workers revolution i reckonGrin

Polarbearflavour · 10/03/2017 10:08

I've stayed in 5 star hotels but not like this! Gosh.

Finding the French head concierge a bit annoying. I do wonder how often they get $200 tips?

Working in a luxury hotel would not be the job for me, I'm not able to be very nice and deferential all the time. I used to be air cabin crew but now work in an office away from people Smile

ppeatfruit · 10/03/2017 13:17

If they send back foreign workers the hotel would collapse

If they send back foriegn workers nearly the whole of the hospitality industry would collapse, not to mention the agricultural industry etc.

It's despicable, I can'r understand the brexit attitude, most Brits wouldn't do those jobs anyway.

purpleme12 · 11/03/2017 20:17

Don't like the French concierge much

GirlElephant · 11/03/2017 20:51

I was shocked they pay minimum wage!

purpleme12 · 11/03/2017 21:47

Who was the man on it? Was it Morgan Freeman?

RTKangaMummy · 11/03/2017 22:06

Yes Morgan freeman Smile

We rung the hotel to ask about wheelchair access to the bedrooms but was shocked main phone number wasn't answered for ages, gave up in end then reservations didn't know answer when they finally answered

Very disappointed that they didn't know answers about wheelchair access

Also, that they pay such low wages to the staff who do the hard work for such high prices for customers - of course high room costs only to those who decide to pay the bill ShockShockShockShock

purpleme12 · 11/03/2017 22:17

Wow that's disappointing about the time to answer phone and their knowledge about wheelchair access! Seems at odds with what the programme's saying

RTKangaMummy · 11/03/2017 22:41

I know that is what we thought about phone (it was the evening about 8.20pm so not UK office hours but also not 3am!! but if we had been ringing from LA or Australia etc you sort of expect the staff to be working in the evening to answer the GENERAL INQUIRIES number (their spelling from website not mine) and access

I wanted to know cos of the steps leading up to main door are obviously out and even small steps up into ballroom which could have been made flat as they are really just paving slabs up from pavement as opposed to steps like the main entrance

There is a chance that there is a wheelchair lift near front entrance sort of hidden by foliage looking at programme by freezing frames

On their website we couldn't see anything about disabled access (might have missed it but it wasn't obvious)

Totally understand that in old buildings putting in ramps and lifts where there are steps is hard but I deffo wouldn't want to pay ££££££££ to stay somewhere that my entrance was round the back through the lorry delivery yard or that I was a burden to staff by them putting down temporary ramps each time I wanted to go to dining room or reception

RTKangaMummy · 11/03/2017 22:59

Actually just looked on street view and there might be a lift or ramp near front door and it shows entrance to ballroom as flat (I think) but obviously if there is a party or wedding going on in there the wheelchair guests can't go through

Sorry for my rants BlushBlush

I am enjoying the programme cos I love fly on wall documentary, I agree with others about French concierge though

EachandEveryone · 11/03/2017 23:48

The couple that got married? She proper wore the trousers!

kennypppppppp · 12/03/2017 17:30

I used to work in a hotel literally opposite the mandarin (and down a side street, but virtually opposite) and lots of the maids and receptionists lived in. Right in the roof. Views over Knightsbridge. It was gorgeous. Maybe people who are paid more (I.e. The housekeeping manager) just don't need to live in, but I would have thought that a few of them do.

PossumInAPearTree · 12/03/2017 18:28

I live that French concierge, bet he's a total bitch.

ShakeofFara · 12/03/2017 18:48

We've been watching this too. The money spent is obscene and as for the 'guests' who give vox pops throughout they are mostly awful. That poor woman who'd been night shift supervisor for 9months, no wonder she left.

Morgan Freeman was lovely though.

purpleme12 · 12/03/2017 21:25

Yes i thought he was lovely too

Polarbearflavour · 17/03/2017 09:41

The way some guests leave the room in a state causing 10k worth of carpet damage...shocking. Shock

PossumInAPearTree · 17/03/2017 12:28

I wouldn't be happy to get a 10k bill if I accidentally spilt something on a carpet.

Polarbearflavour · 17/03/2017 15:44

It was a lot more than an accident! Loads and loads of spillages.

RTKangaMummy · 17/03/2017 16:11

I'm glad they billed them cos that was disrespectful not just an accident of dropping cup of coffee

Anyway, the housekeeping would have come to clean as soon as it happened, to minimise the stain, if they had rung them but obviously they didn't over and over again

I think it is a thing of having too much money but not respect other people's stuff or belongings

ppeatfruit · 19/03/2017 09:26

I recorded this and watched the one about the restaurant. I liked the little girl patisserie chef (she looked about 8!).

We stay in hotels quite a bit mainly on expenses for work. I don't go for the very modern rooms, I like some character, shame they were auctioning off the nice Georgian style furniture.

ppeatfruit · 19/03/2017 09:29

There are selfish ignorant people in every walk of life though aren't there Kanga ? We always make sure to leave our room tidied and we leave tips for the cleaners\chambermaids
