Anyone watching?

At least he never slapped her on the arse and told her to wash up.
It will spoil it if its to focused on the sexism. At least the boss seems slightly enlightened.
I'm still mourning the loss of Prime Suspect USA Sad

Which sexism are we talking about? Seventies sexism (pinching bottoms, "make the tea luv") or modern-day sexism (dead body is yet another abused, semi naked, young female).

CoolCarrie · 03/03/2017 20:12

I think it is easy to see where it's going. She will have an affair with her boss, who is probably married, get beaten up, or threatened, end up undercover as a street walker and escape the murderer by the skin of her teeth, and also will be touched up and have lots of sexist comments in her direction, but hope I am proved wrong! Prefer Endeavour tbh

Bestthingever · 03/03/2017 20:36

I don't think you can talk about women police officers and not talk about sexism. My aunt started in the police around 1970 and had to deal with a lot of bullshit. One detail I liked was when the father went to identify the body she had ladders in her tights. The uniform the women had to wear (skirts and black tights) wasn't fit for purpose.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 03/03/2017 22:55

Yes I think it was probably a good representation of what it was like in 1973, especially in an organisation as conservative as the police- judging by what older female relatives have told me and by what my experience of shop and office work in the 1980s was like. Don't forget the equal pay act didn't become law until 1976...

drigon · 03/03/2017 22:58

Yes, it was quite good, not outstanding. Liked the other wpc and the desk sergeant.

Megatherium · 03/03/2017 23:04

I think it's quite well made, but it does seem like the easy option at the moment to do series about 20th century cops. I keep expecting Morse, Gene Hunt and Foyle to turn up.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 03/03/2017 23:10

I did think that the actress was believable as a young Jane Tennison. Not sure I'll watch the rest though as it was a bit slow-moving for me and I found it very weird (but also somehow slightly appropriate) that Neil from the in betweeners was in that role.

kaitlinktm · 05/03/2017 19:35

Is there a different storyline in each episode?

mrssmith79 · 05/03/2017 19:52

I think "Jane" was too pretty for Tennyson

Have you seen the young Helen Mirren?? She's stunning! I thought the actress who played her had some striking similarities, thinking especially of her in her Age of Consent era.

QueenoftheAndals · 05/03/2017 20:07

There is actually a resemblance, especially in the second photo.

absolutelynotfabulous · 05/03/2017 22:10

I agree Helen Mirren was stunning when younger.

I meant (I think) that the 1973 Jane looks "pretty" in too current a way.

And imho she doesn't compute with the 1973 Helen Mirren somehow, who has always had something extra about her. A certain charisma maybe? She still has that.

CoolCarrie · 05/03/2017 22:38

The woman playing Jane in this series looks uncanny like Sinead in Corrie

Davros · 05/03/2017 22:49

I liked it. I remember 1973 well but I was 13 then. I'm surprised she doesn't live in a Section House.

AlexanderHamilton · 05/03/2017 22:52

I've not managed to catch the first episode yet but in the book she does move into police accommodation (seemed to me a similar set up to student nurses used to live with rules & regs)

Embekkisson1 · 05/03/2017 22:59

Yes I thought she would of lived in the section house . They were especially for young police men and women who would bf on early and late shifts . It was a bit ridiculous the mother saying " why were you at work for so long ?". I don't think a young police woman would of wanted to live at home and such nosey parents when she could live in a section house .

Embekkisson1 · 05/03/2017 23:01

Not "bf"be

AlexanderHamilton · 05/03/2017 23:08

In the book her parents disapprove strongly of her being in the police & her moving into the police house is her rebellion. Maybe it's in a future episode.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/03/2017 18:01

Enjoyed it

Must be hard to play someone younger in a role they've played for years iyswim

Also find hard watching Neil from inbetweeners with a dodgy tashe 😂

deadringer · 07/03/2017 21:47

Coolcarrie i thought she looked remarkably like corrie's sinead too!

Graphista · 07/03/2017 23:37

I'm enjoying it. Pace is fine as I think it's going to be like broadchurch and scandidramas and one case for the series.

Yes reminiscent of life on Mars to some degree but that may just be due to portraying the same era (if you look at period dramas made in 70's/80's/90's portraying the same eras there's similarities eg 50's everyone into rock n roll, 60's always swinging and Beatles music)

LOVING the soundtrack hoping they release it.

NormaSmuff · 10/03/2017 07:28

still pretty slow and boring in fact.
but might stick with it.

surprised to see the prisoners wearing suits and ties Shock

DubiousCredentials · 10/03/2017 09:01

How many more episodes are there? I was expecting it to be wrapped up last night! I agree it was a bit slow but I still enjoyed it. Was a bit odd to see that body floating in the river and then no other reference to it at all.

Optimist1 · 10/03/2017 09:34

I've given up on this now. Sad

Polarbearflavour · 10/03/2017 10:12

I'm annoyed that what was then called Hackney Hospital was referred to as Homerton Hospital - it didn't open until 1986!
