BBC dramatisation based on the kidnapping of Shannon Matthews. Starts Tuesday 7th February 9pm, starring Sheridan Smith.

Obviously a horrendous crime against a young child so I wasn't sure I'd want to watch, but it looks like it focuses on friends of the mother who headed up the search and barely features the child herself.

I love Sheridan Smith too so will give it a go.

What's wrong with "what age are you?" Though?

PuppyMonkey · 09/02/2017 19:20

There's nothing wrong with it, just like nothing wrong with "what do they call her." Everyone is saying that was a weird question etc and analysing it, I'm just trying badly to point out that some people just talk like that and use those phrases.

SherlockPotter · 09/02/2017 19:25

I'm a bit uneasy about the Maddie McCann references though... Natalie (Sian Brooke aka Eurus from Sherlock) definitely knows something is up.

Surreyblah · 09/02/2017 19:27

Heard a radio 4 complaints type programme where the viewer had complained that it was unethical to make this TV show so soon after the events and without consulting the victim.

The writer was interviewed, and he came across very badly indeed IMO. Like he wanted to "tell a story" of his choice, from the angle he wanted.

OneWithTheForce · 09/02/2017 19:33

Oh right, I was just wondering why you used that phrase as an example of a phrase that wouldn't be normal. To me that's how you would ask someone's age so I was baffled. Have now also realised that you refer to your family as Irish and I am Irish so clearly it's an Irish thing! Grin Didn't realise it wasn't said everywhere!

PuppyMonkey · 09/02/2017 19:37

OneWith it's made me think of my dear old mum, God rest her - lovely way of talking. Smile

SherlockPotter · 09/02/2017 19:44

SS's portrayal of Julie reminded me of her character Janet from Two Pints and a Packet of Crisps.

MrsJayy · 09/02/2017 19:45

Oh my god yes a nearly 40 Janet Grin

OneWithTheForce · 09/02/2017 19:47

Oh I do miss two pints!! Loved that show. They should do a one off come back.

MipMipMip · 09/02/2017 19:50

I'd imagine the police assume a mother is pretty frantic by that stage Not, so it's prompting (have you done this) rather than putting words in her mouth.

MrsJayy · 09/02/2017 19:51

It went weird after johnny died i stopped watching it.

OneWithTheForce · 09/02/2017 19:54

It did. It wasn't the same without him.

NotJanine · 09/02/2017 19:56

Mip - it makes sense from the full transcript catz posted above. She was just confirming what Karen had already said to her. I either didn't hear that on the programme or they didn't include it.

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2017 19:57

I live a few miles from Dewsbury Moor.
"What do they call her?" Is a perfectly normal phrasing to of ask what someone's name is in these parts.

Hulababy · 09/02/2017 20:14

Re "What do they call her"

Reading the transcript it makes sense. I think it is possibly more of a regional turn of phrase thats all.

SherlockPotter · 09/02/2017 20:16

The last series was crap! But I miss Two Pints!

AwaywiththePixies27 · 09/02/2017 20:25

Didn't hear the r4 thing so cant comment on how he came across but the telling a story of his choice from the angle he wanted. Isn't that generally what writers do anyway? You can tell ten people the same story word perfect. They'll still tell their own version of it to the next person they talk to.

southeastdweller · 09/02/2017 20:27

I think that the writer of the series came across well on Radio 4. As he said, the programme isn't about Shannon, which the presenter didn't seem to understand.

MipMipMip · 09/02/2017 21:28

Sorry Not, replies weren't showing when I posted. If I'd seen them all i'd have kept quiet - far better answers given!

MsGameandWatch · 10/02/2017 10:12

I watched it last night. If this programme is a true representation of how it all played out, it looks to me like those around KM and the area at large were having the time of their lives and enjoying such a huge distraction from the monotony of their dull and difficult lives.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 10/02/2017 11:19

southeastdweller yes that's what I took from it. That yes it was centred around SMs disappearance etc but the emphasis, at least to me, was on the communities reaction and how they dealt with it. It was interesting seeing KMs friends all have different opinions. How the sun shone out her arse as far as Julie was concerned but the slight niggles the other friends were having. Didn't recognise Sian Brookes at all in this. Then again, I didn't click on that it was her playing the 214 slight exaggeration different women in Sherlock either! Grin

I read an article in the paper this morning. The grandparents are said to be furious and reported they / the family weren't approached but then again it was a huge story for weeks. The producers and writers won't be the last people to make a documentary / story out of it.

user1475253854 · 10/02/2017 11:30

I heard the thing on R4 and I think the presenter took issue with the fact that the writer/producer saying it was a true story, or that was how it happened and it was ok to make it but that they hadn't consulted Shannon about it, so she was questioning how he could say that. I think.

KatoPotato · 10/02/2017 13:44

Surely I'm not the only MN'er to spot the PENGUIN BOLLARDS!

zukiecat · 10/02/2017 14:45

I'm not sure the grandparents have any right to complain as they sold their story to a newspaper while Shannon was still "missing"

Think someone else mentioned this upthread or maybe in the AIBU one

I remember from somewhere (could be the Rose Martin book) or one that another journalist wrote, that Karen's parents absolutely slated her

AwaywiththePixies27 · 10/02/2017 16:14

Agreed zukiecat I was just repeating what had been reported. I bet they also haven't seen anything off her since she was found either.
