How do you make a Victoria sandwich that is that flat on the top? Mine always rises slightly in the middle.

ample · 26/10/2016 20:20

So hungry...

RebootYourEngine · 26/10/2016 20:20

Jane's looked the tastiest. Im not a fan of blueberries but i want to eat Janes meringue.

AlmaMartyr · 26/10/2016 20:20

I felt really bad for Andrew there.

TheSpottedZebra · 26/10/2016 20:21

I like this challenge -back to basics.
I'm a creamer though. Me 'n' Pixie.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 26/10/2016 20:21

it's all about who can do it exactly how Mary wants, not whether they can follow a technical recipe, or make a good cake! But it is all dependent on whether it follows her rules, using the right sugar, the right proportions, etc.

ClaraLane · 26/10/2016 20:21

I love Victoria sponge. DH thinks his mum makes the best one but she doesn't put jam in it so you have to spread jam on your slice once it's been cut, weirdo! I need cake Angry

MiddleClassProblem · 26/10/2016 20:21

Barking, just cut the top off Wink

Roussette · 26/10/2016 20:21

Mine rises in the middle too even if I spread it to the outside... no idea why!

ample · 26/10/2016 20:21

I turn mine upside down Barking to get a flat top, as mine domes too

MiddleClassProblem · 26/10/2016 20:21

Or flip it

FoxesOnSocks · 26/10/2016 20:21

Just eaten my body weight in chocolate chip cookies 🍪 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 🍪 🍪

GrouchyKiwi · 26/10/2016 20:21

This is a good challenge.

Sponges here are so different from what I grew up with. I think the kind my family makes seems like a Genoese.

books I had a moment of triumph when my mother was over. She's been making pav for 30+ years (since she was married, so 1977 too) and decided my recipe is nicer than hers so now uses that one. My Mum's an incredible cook so that was a good moment. Wink

Soubriquet · 26/10/2016 20:21

I don't like cake...but even I know a Victoria sponge needs jam AND buttercream

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 26/10/2016 20:22

I feel like I'm watching a football match shouting "Come on Jane!" at the TV.

bookbook · 26/10/2016 20:22

22-25 minutes Jane.....

ample · 26/10/2016 20:23

I must have missed something?
Does one of the Baker's not know how to fill a Victoria sandwich?

Soubriquet · 26/10/2016 20:23

Nows it's Jane with the catty comments

It must be tense in that tent

bookbook · 26/10/2016 20:23

oh, thats a good feeling Grouchy :)

RebootYourEngine · 26/10/2016 20:24

Jane is so emotional tonight. I think she really wants to win.

barkingtreefrog · 26/10/2016 20:24

Good catch Jane!
I shall flip my top sponge when I make one this wkd then!
I don't make my own jam though....

MiddleClassProblem · 26/10/2016 20:24

Think it's just competitive not catty from them all

SoupDragon · 26/10/2016 20:24

I need cake.

TheSpottedZebra · 26/10/2016 20:24
