Missed the beginning unfortunately.

Very moving so far, especially the 10 year old girl and her mum.

Have finally stopped crying

I think the older woman to a certain extent was confident in her 'differentness' which I think may explain her lack of interest in having dental work done - it's the least of her worries I would have thought.

All the parents were great.

Like one of the mums on the programme said, there are over 200 types of dwarfism and we're hoping very much that ds has one of the mildest forms there is.

During pregnancy and in his first few months one type of dwarfism was mentioned which is very scary indeed, which is often fatal in early childhood, so we just feel very blessed and happy really that ds hasn't got that one.

Mercy · 29/01/2007 22:27

Emkana

You will be one those of great parents too! not that you aren't already

Do you know if/when ds would be diagnosed?

OP posts:
emkana · 29/01/2007 22:29

Sorry Mercy x-posted there!

Thanks for the kind words.

They are currently testing ds for hypochondroplasia, but that takes a while.

If he comes back as having that, great, we know what we're looking at. But if it comes back as neg, we're back to the drawing board. He could still have hypochondroplasia, as in 30 % of cases they can't determine it through a blood test, or he might have another type of dwarfism altogether, but which one? Who knows...

Carmenere · 29/01/2007 22:30

Yes but Emkana don't forget about my good friend who at 39 is having an art exhibition at a major Manhattan gallery next week. He's is fab and has a difficult but happy life and is most importantly surrounded by people who love him as I'm sure Sebastian is

emkana · 29/01/2007 22:31

Thanks carmenere that's great to hear.

Sebastian is such a smiler that everybody is instantly in love with him!

AitchTwoOh · 29/01/2007 22:34

i'm not surprised, emkana, it's a chilling statistic. not that we actually heard the stat, but you know what i mean?

how did you get his diagnosis?

emkana · 29/01/2007 22:38

We haven't got a definite diagnosis yet.

It's an ongoing saga really, started this time last year at the 20 week scan, when his measurements started to not add up.

Basically he has short arms and legs, and a slightly small chest.

But because there are so many different types it's very difficult to arrive at a definite diagnosis.

AitchTwoOh · 29/01/2007 22:38

sorry, x-posted.

AitchTwoOh · 29/01/2007 22:39

i see. i really thought that the mothe of Bri hit on something when she said that society is set up for perfection. that was very moving, i thought.

emkana · 29/01/2007 22:40

I am proud to say though that all the uncertainty made him a very eagerly awaited baby here on MN, and he had the longest birth announcement thread ever... [boast emoticon]

AitchTwoOh · 29/01/2007 22:42

although nataliejane will forever hold the crown as longest labour ever...

sebastian sounds lovely, a good grin can get you very far in life.

emkana · 29/01/2007 22:48
