TENNIS THREAD!- From the Road to Rio, to Flushing Meadows...

Raahh · 09/08/2016 23:14

before my phone decides to give up altogether, here's a new thread to get us on our way.

Andy Murray still in the Olympic Singles, as is Rafa,

Jo Konta through for the women.

Lots of missing names from the top players- but we are edging towards the US open- without Federer- and who knows, maybe even without Djokovic.

Could we be heading for all change at the top?

I have not been able to see any of it, but chuffed to bits for Potato. He's had a great year, and I really hope he can keep up the momentum and shake things up a bit.

just dug up thiis thread to say how shocked I am by what has happened to Petra Kvitova. She's one of my favourite female players. I wish her a speedy recovery.

Congrats to Andy- I think SPOTy 3 times is a bit muchGrin and I'm sure in an Olympic year there must have been someone else who could have won. But, on the plus side, it shows that tennis is now constantly high on the radar with the public, when previously, winners would be athletics champions or footballers, so that's got to be good.

So, Merry Christmas tennis fans Tennis. Hope you all have a good one.

Rafa has Carlos Moya in his camp- I don't think anyone is expecting former glories, but I hope he has a consistent, and more importantly an injury free, year.
I wonder if 2017 will (finally) see Fed retire?
I am looking forward to seeing what Raonic can do- I like his mini rivalry with Andy, he needs to step it up a gear and could be a real threat.
I think it is dangerous to think Djok is on the way down. Whatever problems he has had in the second half of this year, mental, physical or otherwise- I suspect he will come back fighting.
And Del Potro for Number 1Grin

So-here's to 2017.

Aussie Open not that far off....

And it looks like it will be Sir Andrew Baron Murray in the New Year. Wine

I might not be his biggest fan, but he deserves it for what he has achieved this year. (and he gets one before David Beckham who over the past number of years has shown himself to be desperate Grin to be a 'Sir' , so it makes me happy) Grin

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2016 22:47

Evening Raahh!

Sir Andy? Oh wow! He certainly does deserve it. And yes, I'm delighted for him to get it before David Beckham does Grin

Can't wait for the new tennis season to start Tennis

Raahh · 30/12/2016 22:47

Jessica Ennis becomes a dame, and Mo Farah , is knighted too. which i think is fantastic.

(although ,not tennis , or sport related, my favourite knights this year are b Ken Dodd and Mark Rylance). I fell in love with Mark Rylance in 1988, when I saw him as Hamlet. He wore pyjamas.

Ken Dodd is amazing- my dad (no spring chicken Grin ) has been to a few of his shows- they can go on for hours.

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2016 22:52

Yes, I'm delighted for Jess & for Mo.

My dear departed granddad used to adore Ken Dodd, loved watching him on TV. I never got the attraction, that tickling stick of his terrified me Grin

Raahh · 30/12/2016 22:54

Drama - happy Christmas/new year etc....

(it's my birthday, I'm a bit tipsy. 45. I'm 45 . I am sure i am 19, though and it's still 1990...)

Andy lost today in the exhibition tournament he's playing in- Rafa is in the final against Goffin. My love for Rafa is not diminished, but my expectations are lower then before.I still believe- I think there is still some But I think tennis is as much a mental, as it is a physical, game. So - who knows?

Aussie open soon, so excited. Makes the gloom of january go away.

ahhh yes, Ken and his tickling stick.

and the Diddy men. Doesn't help when you are 4 ft 8 yourself, bet the Diddy men were taller Grin

Oh happy birthday! Cake Flowers and more Wine to you!

45 you say? You are a mere youngster compared to me, anyway

Raahh · 30/12/2016 23:12

FlowersThank you! I'm not a fan of my birthday, it's a bit rubbish at this point in Christmas week, especially when you don't really bother with New Year, - (and ds's birthday was yesterday, sorry ds Grin ), but it has been o.k .Grin

Brilliant news that Andy has been given a knighthood

Unfortunate result today but Goffin was on fire.

Allez David tomorrow Smile

Raahh · 31/12/2016 13:11

Vamos Rafa! Nice to end the year on a high, and it's always lovely to see his smile.

Happy New Year!

Had a nice morning ironing school uniform and watching Rafa playing in Brisbane. Was a very solid performance. Raonic will be a harder prospect, obviously. I'm getting very excited for the Aussie open now.

JaneJeffer · 05/01/2017 15:55

Happy New Year everyone. Hope you had a good birthday Raahh

Just have to get these pesky kids off to school next week then I can enjoy the tennis in peace!

DramaAlpaca · 05/01/2017 18:26

Happy New Year to you all.

Can't wait for the Aussie Open. Currently watching Qatar, where Murray is involved in a bit of a tussle with Almagro.

Raahh · 05/01/2017 23:26

Thank you Jane my birthday was good.

I can't believe how quickly the Aussie open has come around again! I'm sure the years are getting shorter or I'm just getting old Grin.

torn tomorrow, because obviously I want Rafa to win, but I really want Milos to have a good start to the year too.

OP posts:
Raahh · 06/01/2017 11:54
Sad

well. he started well, but given he hasn't played a lot of matches n the past fe months , he hasn't done too badly. Was always going to be a tough match today though, and I do like Milos. I will let him win the tournament Grin.

OP posts:
Raahh · 06/01/2017 19:02

I'm still gutted Del Potro isn't playing in Australia, I really hoped he would be. But, if it means he will be totally fit moving on, then it's for the best, I suppose. But I was getting used to seeing him around. Sad

What a shame that Sir Andy didn't beat Novak

Fingers crossed for gorgeous Grigor in Brisbane tonight. He touched my back - I'm in looooove

Raahh · 08/01/2017 13:53

Well done to Grigor- I'm glad to see he's back on the right track. He went through a bit of a slump, but is moving back in the right direction now.

Am- did you ever wash your back again? Grin
