Even my dh noticed he has bags under his eyes!
Apparently they will show the crash, not sure if I want to see or not.

That crash was worse than originally reported in the news. That he hit the ground still doing 230mph! Lucky his head wasn't torn off. He didn't look so much tired as skinnier, I suppose obviously he would lose weight after that trauma.

Like you said Belgo, the fact that he had already filmed his piece and done what he needed to do. That extra go nearly cost him everything.

Loved the piece on the roadworks, though.

Hulababy · 28/01/2007 21:07

I think he was probably dreading the first show in some ways - getting the details of the crash, etc and reliving it on screen out of the way, so he can move on.

Had read the article about the crash in DH's Top Gear magazine. Was so shocked at his head ending up buried underground. The crash looked horrifying on screen.

Found it really moving and emotional when Jeremy Clarkson and James May introduced him, and when they talked about having hims till here.

He is one lucky man, that's for sure.

Hulababy · 28/01/2007 21:08

According to the Top Gear magazine he was svaed from worse injuries a huge part because of the type of helmet he worn and the fact that the car didn't fly up into a full roll. It also suggests that his fast reactions when the wheel blew helped.

RubberDuck · 28/01/2007 21:13

Gawd bless the Hamster.

Wanted to give him a cuddle through most of that.

So - how many times an episode do you think that they're going to take the piss out of him for the crash, given that they've promised never to mention it again

Loved the roadworks piece too - was howling with laughter.

Flumpytina · 28/01/2007 21:13

Gosh that was really nerve wracking watching all the runs and knowing he was going to end up upside down.
Am so pleased he's OK (although def thinner), those blokes really make me laugh...only programme DH and I really watch together.

I thought the resurfacing thing was funny!!

belgo · 28/01/2007 21:15

flumptina - yes it's the only programme dh and I watch together as well.

I was amazed at how he could sit there and narrate completely dispassionate, calm and collected given that I felt nervous watching for the crash...

Posey · 28/01/2007 21:24

I watched it from behind my hands. Felt really odd watching it.

Flumpytina · 28/01/2007 21:28

Just as an aside I loved all the digs at Big Brother...oh they are such naughty boys !!(I wonder if Jeremy will get away with what he said about Jade?)

itsmeNDP · 28/01/2007 21:33

I think he looked tired, thin and a bit nervous/uncomfortable tonight.

I love Top Gear.. have just seen the crash... OH MY F*ing God, the Hamster is one lucky man, God was surely watching over him!
Glad to see him back though.
Road surfacing thing was hysterical

Pixel · 28/01/2007 22:31

Yep, said to dh that he looked gaunt. I also thought that he looked as though he'd psyched himself up to get the first programme over, knowing everyone would want to know the details. He seemed to be concentrating on telling it all as calmly as possible and not showing too much reaction. Hopefully now he has got that over he might be able to relax a bit and get back to his cheeky chappie self.

Must say it was quite chilling when he was making jokes just before the crash about serious accidents and not wanting to be upside down.

frenziednester · 28/01/2007 22:37

I agree with you, Pixel. I've been a Hamster fan for ages (even told off DH when he rang tonight from Canada for ringing me when THE episode of Top Gear was on , and I thought he seemed a bit faded, somehow, like he was making an effort to try and be his old self when he wasn't - guess you can't come through something like that and it not change your character, no matter what he says. I've heard he can't drink for 2 years - not sure if it is tru, but that would make me lose my sparkle........

lemonaid · 28/01/2007 22:44

I think it may just be the weight loss -- he wasn't exactly overweight before, so losing that much weight by itself makes him look tired and haggard.

The crash piece was interesting if a bit harrowing. A lot of those comments would have had a very different resonance if it hadn't all ended so (comparatively) well.

wotzsaname · 28/01/2007 22:49

what do you expect he should look like his old shinny self ? It must have been tough just to be back on TV. did anyone see the Jonatahn Ross interview, see link.

I think he is very humble at how fortunate he is and very shocked by it all.

bbc archive of interview online

AitchTwoOh · 28/01/2007 23:26

is it going to be repeated? i got dragged into CBB.

louii · 28/01/2007 23:54

repeated on bbc next saturday at 7pm

quanglewangle · 29/01/2007 00:01

I thought so too, but then I thought he looked just as gaunt (dh's choice of word) in the footage before the crash.

He did look uncomfortable but that seemed to be about the crash - he made them all promise never to mention it on the program again.

He's a sweetie

AitchTwoOh · 29/01/2007 00:04

cheers louii

If you missed the show (like I did), you can watch the crash (and the build up to it) on the Top Gear website.

wuzzlefraggle · 29/01/2007 15:11

awww, bless him, the hamster brought a tear 2 my eye with his little thankyou speach

agree, he does look like he's lost weight

foxinsocks · 29/01/2007 15:13

yes, I thought his face looked a bit thinner and worn but hell, I'm not surprised given what he went through.

Must have been nervewracking doing that first show - I saw him wringing his hands while he watched the crash scene and had to comment on it. Can't have been easy.

sockmonkey · 30/01/2007 08:26

Bless him. I think he just wants to put the accident behind him. I wonder if they will not mention it again as promised.
I bet he will get back to his normal self when he can talk about cars instead of the crash.

loved the roadworks thing too BTW.
