Just finished it and thought it was great. Anyone else think Eleven looked a lot like Wil Wheaton?

Also got a Silent Hill vibe from the Upside Down.

gingerboy1912 · 29/07/2016 23:52

Repent Shock that's good going!

EnidButton · 30/07/2016 01:17

Oh yea! There were strong Silent Hill vibes. Totally missed that.

Toria2014 · 30/07/2016 23:40

That was brilliant. Just finished watching. Is El still alive in the upside down? And will Will turn into one of those monsters now he has effectively been impregnated (a bit alienesque) ?

Kinda hoped Modine's character would have been more spectacularly finished off!

ElsaMars · 31/07/2016 15:54

I've just finished binge watching this over 2 days. It's just bloody brilliant. I sobbed at the 11 bit in the last episode though Sad

Bring on series 2. David Harbour was excellent - not seen him in anything before.

TheEagle · 31/07/2016 19:03

I think El (and maybe other children) is still alive in the Upside Down, and that Hopper is involved with the government trials now.

Loads of nods to Stephen King, the IMDB trivia section is really interesting.

EnidButton · 31/07/2016 19:22

Poss spoiler for anyone that hasn't watched it

I thought Eleven was going to turn out to be Hopper's daughter at first. Until the flashback episode showing what had happened.

ElsaMars · 31/07/2016 19:24

There was an article in the telegraph yesterday about this series and the upcoming series 2. I would link if I could do it!

Dickorydockwhatthe · 31/07/2016 23:22

Wow loved the vibe, story and characters. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Hopper was hot!!! He definitely grew on me throughout the series. I really wanted him to join Winona Ryder at the end too not sure what happened when they took him away in the car though?? I loved how they didn't leave us completely hanging at the end like most series which is really annoying especially when they don't do a second series. Still not sure where it is going to go from here.

ElsaMars · 01/08/2016 14:08

That's it Enid, thanks

shins · 02/08/2016 00:24

Just to be contrary...meh! I'm 44. Stephen King adaptations, ET, Stand By Me, V, Close Encounters...I saw them the first time round and they were great but why the pointless nostalgia? Why not have some daft monster story set in 2016 or do you not get to show kids riding Chopper bikes? The writers were born in 1984 so it's some kind of weird period piece for them. I just don't get it.

RepentAtLeisure · 02/08/2016 01:32

It was meant to be a homage to that era of film, and inspired by it. Stephen King himself gave it a 10 out of 10!

I suppose it would cut out a lot of suspense if people could just call each other on mobile phones at any hour to find each other or find out info instead of having to physically find each other.

iklboo · 02/08/2016 07:14

True. There wouldn't be much suspense taking a selfie with the monster & uploading it to FB / Instagram with a tag of where you are. Or Googling the doctor & lab.

I think it added to ge suspense to show how reliant we are or how we've become so accustomed to easy access technology now.

Middleoftheroad · 02/08/2016 07:47

Loved this. The feel was so reminiscent of Spielberg, King, Carpenter. Absolutely agree with ET and The Goonies. It also reminded me a lot of IT.i wonder what else the cop has been in. He's great.

The music is brilliant, the child actors superb and just the whole atmospheric and retro feel makes this one of my favourite series in a long time.

Middleoftheroad · 02/08/2016 07:49

PS I'm 43 so also of tge original era and don't see it as pointless nostalgia. It is a love letter to that wonderful era of film.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/08/2016 11:11

I've watched five episodes, and am enjoying it so far. Some really minor things have made a huge impression on me, like that the actors have real skin with freckles, little scars and wrinkles. I'm so used to the pore-less perfection of heavy make-up that it was a bit of a shock to see real skin. Of course, it's there's an entire school population without any acne in sight so it's not as I remember the 1980s, but still more realistic than most tv.

Bless the casting director for picking such different looking people. I'm fairly face-blind and usually have trouble with the plot if I can't tell the actors apart. There are often a number of men between 25 and 45 with symmetrical, attractive faces and short brown hair that I can't tell apart, or a couple of women with long hair the same colour. This series they all look completely different from each other (except for the lab workers who are all heavy-set, dark-haired men but that doesn't matter for plot purposes). They have quirky faces, different body types, different hair cuts, unique posture and gait, it's fab.

I'm enjoying the story too, although I have to say that I find it hard to believe that someone would see a growling, pulsing, sticky hole in the trunk of a tree and think it would be a good idea to crawl in.

shins · 02/08/2016 12:31

Natalia Dyer looks like she has an eating disorder- I don't remember anyone as pinched and ill-looking as her in that era of 80s movies. I don't like picking at women's appearances for the sake of it but even my teenage son commented on how gaunt she looked. It shouldn't be normalised.

JessicaEccles · 02/08/2016 13:35

Actually, I was that thin in the 80s. And it was AWFUL- a group of boys at school used to sing 'Holidays in Cambodia' at me Sad. I am also glad to see that people aren't as groomed or shiny looking as they are now., and the clothes are a bit shabby.

EnidButton · 02/08/2016 13:39

Hmm Some people are that size. She does not look like she has an eating disorder. How offensive.

Middleoftheroad · 02/08/2016 15:33

Winona is tiny though too and she was in lots of 80s films, so not unusual. Agree that some people are naturally that tiny.

Loved the Will Wheaton comparison. Had been trying to think who she reminded me of and that's it!!! Smile

shins · 02/08/2016 16:42

Winona did not look like that, she was very slim and slightly built but healthy looking. If you've known people with anorexia you spot the signs. If you want offensive, there are hundreds of posts all over this forum viciously slagging off women's looks just for fun. I said she looks unwell and it was concerning. That's all.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/08/2016 22:08

I think extreme thinness is fine so long as it's not presented as an aspirational thing. This series has all sorts of body shapes and all sorts of quirky looking faces, this is not 90210 or Baywatch. Plenty of teenagers, both male and female, can be extremely thin and gawky. My own DS (not quite teen) looks scarily skinny after a growth spurt, it doesn't mean he should be banned from being on tv if that's what he wants to do.

BennyTheBall · 19/08/2016 01:42

I have just binged Watched the first 3 episodes. Loving it so much.

Must. Go. To. Bed.

Pingpang · 20/08/2016 18:31

If anyone has a Perfect Prep machine, I think it sounds uncannily like the monster thing....or that might just be me.....
