might have spoken too soon...

Raahh · 02/07/2016 20:55

Pot's match appears to have been suspended, maybe it's the lighting?
Gasquet has stepped it up.

TwentyOneGuns · 02/07/2016 21:41

Haven't posted on the Wimbledon threads before but can I just ask why everyone hates Djokovic? I don't know much about him but thought he seemed OK!

SpaceUnicorn · 02/07/2016 22:03

Purely my personal opinion, but my distaste for him goes back to the days when he would fake injury when he was losing a game he didn't feel he should lose - so much so that he was known on the circuit as 'fakervic'. In general I find him quite rude and arrogant. His parents have been known to verbally abuse his opponents (I know he's not responsible for their behaviour, but for me it ties into a feeling that the family are unpleasant and unsporting in general).

He's damped down a lot of the gamesmanship since becoming number 1, but I remember the unpleasantness he often showed when he was on his way up.

This covers quite a lot of it for me. I appreciate that clever editing can present a biased view, but could you edit something like this together for Federer or Nadal? I don't think so.

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2016 22:06

Hi Twenty, I don't think people on the thread actually hate Djokovic, it's just that it would be nice to see another player win something as Djokovic has been so dominant over the last couple of years. That's my take on it anyway. I've nothing against him personally, he's just too bloody good!

SpaceUnicorn · 02/07/2016 22:18

It's definitely personal dislike for me, Drama Grin

I appreciate that he is incredibly good, but I can never enjoy watching him, unfortunately. Great tennis player, not so great as a sportsman.

NoBarbaraGood · 02/07/2016 22:25

I enjoyed that YouTube vid, SpaceUnicorn, but I'm not certain that a similar one couldn't be made of my favorite player's worst moments, too.

There is a funny pair of videos on YouTube from a long while back maybe from RG where a youthful Djoko speaks about how he was controlling a match, against Rafa, although he was forced to withdraw because he was injured, or it was too hot, or he couldn't breathe, or he had a sore throat or whAtever the ailment of the day was, and then a matching video of Rafa being told what Djoko had said. Rafa is clearly puzzled, as though he doesn't understand the English, and then incredulous that ND would have said such a thing about such a match.

Sorry. That took a long time to say not very much. But it IS funny....

As for reasons not to like Djoko, how much time do you have? I have many reasons, myself. And many of them go way back. I've been watching tennis for a long time.

Plenty of "fans" seem to think tennis only happens during slams, and they like to follow someone who wins a lot.

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2016 22:29

Ha! I didn't see your post before I posted mine Space. That video shows some bratty behaviour, doesn't it? I'd forgotten a lot of that stuff.

Goingtobeawesome · 03/07/2016 07:14

I don't like him either. He doesn't play fair.

mogloveseggs · 03/07/2016 08:00

I don't get the take your frustration out on the racket palaver it's bloody wasteful and childish. As for the striptease? Bleurgh!!

Mama1980 · 03/07/2016 08:05

I don't hate Djokovic, in fact when we met him he was lovely, my son is his number one fan. But I don't like the way he plays tennis, I've watched him for years and I don't like the gamesmanship, the little digs, and the fairly dull robotic style he has. Everything with him always seems so careful, so rehearsed, he wants to be loved by his own admission and does everything to that end. You never see him collapsing to the floor just screaming with delight the way you do with nadal, potato, etc. He never messes up a interview, intentionally or not hilariously....i just don't like to watch him. It's nothing personal.

Hoping potato can recover and win today, would also be nice to see zverev do well.
Now in the AOBMOF camp Wink

TwentyOneGuns · 03/07/2016 08:14

This is interesting, I hadn't noticed that about him but then I openly admit to being a 'Wimbledon' fan rather than a serious tennis watcher - sorry if that's sacrilege on this thread!

I never seem to find the time to follow sport (or anything else on TV) seriously but Wimbledon has a special place in my heart because my Nana and Mum watched it every single year as far back as I can remember - it just says summer to me and makes me feel happy even when it's chucking it down outside (which being Wimbledon fortnight it usually is!)

magimedi · 03/07/2016 08:50

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross summed up how a feel about Djok - this is her/his post from the thread that was current during the French Open:

" sometimes I try to reflect on it rationally and think of all the reasons I shouldn't dislike him: he's a brilliant player, and seems like a good man, and I know does a huge amount of charity work and is probably kind to puppies and so on. I'm also genuinely touched by the way he talks about what it was like to grow up in the Balkans when he did. But there's an arrogance to him, and an unconscious sexism, and he is just almost too clean-living and flawless. I like Stan's erratic nature, and Andy's moodiness on court which is offset by his generosity and feminism off court. And I love what a wonderful ambassador Rafa is for the sport and his genuine humility and his beauty, and I've always been a fan of the beauty of Federer's play.

I just can't find that one thing to love about Djokovic."

"

No problems at all, TwentyOne - This is a really easy going thread & all are welcome.

The more tennis fans for whatever the reason the better, in my opinion. I hope you didn't feel slighted in any way by what I wrote, TwentyOne; that's not what I was talking about.

TwentyOneGuns · 03/07/2016 11:12

No not at all! It's really interesting to read other people's views on the players, I had no idea Djokovic was seen that way but reading the comments above I can kind of see why.

CremeEggThief · 03/07/2016 11:29

I have a grudge against him going back to 2007, when he disrespected the game of tennis by retiring in the semi-finals of Wimbledon AngryShock. He then retired in a few other high profile matches, such as the quarter-finals of the Australian open. I also don't like the way his family used to cheer him on, and the nasty comments they made about other players in interviews, although to be fair, they've toned down a lot in more recent times. Federer once told the family to be quiet!

CremeEggThief · 03/07/2016 11:39

I'm not sure the powers that be at Wimbledon have made the best decision about scheduling. In my opinion, they should have put the matches that need to finish on CC, such as Deliciano vs Kyrgios and Del Potro vs Pouille.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/07/2016 12:00

Am Blush that someone thought my post worth quoting!

There was uproar chez OnlyBoy yesterday when he went out. But now torn between Murray and Federer! The head says Britain needs a Murray win after the crap time it's been having lately; the heart says one more time for Federer...

magimedi · 03/07/2016 12:01

Isn't there some rule about matches thzt have started having to stay on the same court? And, I could be wrong, I think the players dislike being shifted half way through. Apparently each court plays/bounces slightly differently to the other.

JuanPotatoTwo · 03/07/2016 12:05

I'm not going to go into a long discourse about why I like Djok but I will say that a lot of the accusations levelled at him re gamesmanship/cheating/faking can, and are, levelled at most other players. If you have a dislike of a player you can nearly always find some incident, over the years most of them have been playing, to back up your dislike. I mean, ridiculous as it sounds, there are even some people who dislike Pot Shock. Unbelievable, right? :)

Anyway - CremeEgg, I'm with you on wishing they'd show Pot v Pouille. Kind of thought they would after his surprising win over Stan.

CremeEggThief · 03/07/2016 12:16

I think most players would make an exception if it meant getting on CC, MagiSmile.

CremeEggThief · 03/07/2016 12:18

Good first set there for Coco. I don't know much about her, but I think she has the makings of being a cracking player.

I would agree with you about that, Juan. I think once you take a dislike yo someone, you'll find other reasons to back up your dislike.

GrouchyKiwi · 03/07/2016 12:37

I have no feelings either way re Djokovic. I'm just glad Querrey won because I don't like the same person winning all the time. I'd not have wanted Kyrgios to beat him, for example.

In the same vein, I don't mind when my beloved All Blacks lose, as long as it's not to Wales, South Africa or England.

Re scheduling, I was surprised that the matches that needed to finish weren't up first. Is the weather supposed to be better a bit later in the day?

I quite like Coco. She has a nice game.

DramaAlpaca · 03/07/2016 12:56

I think it is standard that interrupted matches stay on the court they started on. It's fair to both players as the conditions are slightly different on each court.

Also, they always seem to schedule matches that have been held over from the previous day for the second match on court. I don't know why though.

I'm hoping Pot will be on the red button later. Thankfully it is now working for me, it wasn't for the first few days which was really annoying.
