The Shakespeare " Royal variety show" thing. Did you see it?

Just catching up on this with dh and dd2. It's bril!

So many amazing actors doing their " party pieces"

Mayor geek fest for dd2 - she loves Shakespeare

" falstaff ... The tavern scene - mum this is brilliant !" " mum mum that was the southafrican chap we saw doing hamlet wasn't it" etc :)

Backed up with dh and dd geeking about the music (Shakespearean songs and the Tudor church music heard in the background)

Me. Loved the witches scene from Macbeth done in Swahili and again in Japanese ! Still very powerful .

I saw it, i thought it was very good. Extremely surprised by John lithgow in particular, no offence to him but the others (Judi Dench, Helen mirren, David suchet, Sir Ian ect) are all highly praised shakespearean actors and he's known for sitcoms and comedy (which he is very good at). He managed to absolutely hold his own and match them.

We saw John Lithgow at RSC in that part & he was excellent.

John Lithgow is also known for Shakespearean acting, of course, just like many famous American actors who came up through the theatre.

I guess it suprised me because i've only ever seen him in things like Harry and the Hendersons and third rock from the sun, So i was expect something like Rufus Hound's kiss me kate bit.

US actors who have done a lot of Shakespeare on stage include Al Pacino, Kevin Kline, Ethan Hawke, James Earl Jones, Kevin Spacey.

There's many more who do a lot of theatre in general (American classics, and modern), but not sure how much Shakespeare they do.

It's really difficult to drop a perception of an actor once they've been in a hit sitcom. Richard Briers being the classic example. But of a surprise when he played King Lear, and all those Branagh Shakespeare films.
