Anyone going to try The Durrells (aka My Family and Other Animals)?

These books were a huge part of my childhood, but a lot of people look blank when I mention them.

We saw a preview yesterday and we enjoyed it but felt that the people who'd brought 6 year olds might have been cringing a bit at the sex references, and Mother's gin-fuelled existential crisis.

Is there a new tv series?

I loved the books and remember a tv series when I was a kid which was good.

Kirriemuir · 03/04/2016 08:16

Yes me. Starts tonight at 8 on itv I think.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 03/04/2016 08:26

I loved the book. It's one of the few that has actually made me laugh out loud. I think I read it in my early teens. Is there more than one then? I just read My Family and other Animals.

I'll give the programme a go I think.

YesThisIsMe · 03/04/2016 08:29

Yes there are three Corfu books - the others are Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods

Thanks. I'll see if I can track them down. I was really obsessed with the first book at the time so don't know why I didn't know that.
Possibly Jilly Cooper took over. Blush

gingerboy1912 · 03/04/2016 10:33

I've got it on series link. Hoping I will enjoy it.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 03/04/2016 11:03

Oh yes I've set it to series link.

LOVE the books. Made me cry real tears of laughter and still do. I wonder if the same stories will be featured in the series.

Larry and the matchbox full of scorpions....mothers bathing suit....😄

ChessieFL · 03/04/2016 11:05

I am really looking forward to this, hope it lives up to expectations! I liked the earlier series with Hannah Gordon and Brian Blessed so will be interesting to see how this new version compares.

diddl · 03/04/2016 12:13

OMG! Was it really nearly 30yrs ago?

And before that I read it at school!

SealSong · 03/04/2016 19:36

Just spotted this thread. Looking forwards to the first episode tonight (ITV 8pm). Love the books.

FruStefanOla · 03/04/2016 19:45

Yes. I'm going to watch it tonight. I love the book My Family And Other Animals - and I really enjoyed the previous TV adaptation (1987 - where have the years gone?!)

SealSong · 03/04/2016 20:10

Ahh enjoying it all ready Smile

Oddly today I was looking at holidays in Greece. Must get something booked. Corfu is a gorgeous island; went there a few years ago.

Loving it. After the mess ITV made of Dr Thorne, they show they can do it after all! God I want to go to Greece.

FiveSixPickUpSticks · 03/04/2016 20:16

Loving it so far.

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/04/2016 20:23

Kirriemuir · 03/04/2016 20:31

ineedaholidaynow · 03/04/2016 20:36

Enjoying it so far

SealSong · 03/04/2016 20:40

The dialogue is good. "Have you seen Lesley?" "I try not to look at him" Grin

Watched the first 10/15 minutes and hated it. Keely Hawes seems too young or the children seem too old. So very disappointed.

DMCWelshCakes · 03/04/2016 22:07

Also waiting for the arrival of Widdle and Puke here too!

Really enjoyed it.

YesThisIsMe · 03/04/2016 22:09

She's 40 and Larry's meant to be 21, so I think the ages fit logically for a woman getting married in the 1910s. However the real Louisa was 50 when they went to Corfu.

I really enjoyed it. I read the book years ago and loved all the characters then and judging in this first episode, they've done a brilliant job.

Smartiepants79 · 03/04/2016 22:11

I loved the first book as a child and I think I'll enjoy watching this.
I agree that keeley hawes is a bit young. Also not really eccentric enough for the character as I remember it.
Other characters seem ok though.
Will dig out the book tonight!
