If I loved The Good Wife...

I'm desperately searching for a boxset to buy for a ridiculously long plane journey.

I loved News Room, The Good Wife, Making a Murderer, Elementary, The Following, How to Get Away With Murder- anything that has crime/law and interesting scripts or narrative structures.

I am buying it from iTunes, I've tried to watch The Wire and The West Wing, but sadly think they've dated and wish that I had watched them at the time.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Another huge fan of The Good Wife here. I'm going to really miss it. Not sure there's anything out there I like as much.

billabye · 02/04/2016 11:38

Is The Affair on Netflix or Prime? Not come across it but sounds right up my street.

Howaboutthisone · 02/04/2016 14:22

I'm a huge Good Wife fan! Actually came on telly addicts to find a thread on recent series.

I love Ray Donovan too. Very different to the good wife and not nearly as strong female characters but it's great. It's given me a huge crush on Liev Schreiber.

I'm also really enjoying Madame Secretary. You do have to suspend belief but it's good and well acted.

I was a huge fan of ER- worth watching if you haven't done- and have just discovered Code Black. It's not as good as ER but nothing will be for me. It's very good though. Strong females too.

I wish I'd watched Scandal so that's one for the future for me.

Fitzers · 02/04/2016 16:18

I liked Madame Secretary too but DH and I went off it a bit after the EU episode. No spoilers but anyone who knows anything about the EU would be Hmm about that episode and how the oh so mighty US was portrayed.

Scarydinosaurs · 02/04/2016 19:11

bill the affair is amazing and was on Sky Atlantic.

I used to enjoy Blue Bloods for an easy warm and fuzzy Sunday night television- but the last few episodes have been SO pro US that it has put me off.

I've just downloaded Scandal! Now looking at Code Black as I was a huge ER fan! I rewatched all of them on my first maternity leave...you know, when you have all that time and don't know what to do with it??

Affair is on iTunes

RomComPhooey · 02/04/2016 19:51

Nashville is great for strong female characters. It's a bit soapy but the music more than compensates - some of the cast have fantastic voices.

Looly71 · 02/04/2016 19:54

I like criminal minds. FBI-based and there are about 12 series so you certainly won't run out!

EllaHen · 02/04/2016 20:00

It takes a few episodes to get into but I really liked Crossing Lines. A cross border European force based at The Hague.

NameChange30 · 02/04/2016 20:02

Orange is the new black.

If you like the female characters in the good wife, you will love the female characters in OITNB!

RomComPhooey · 02/04/2016 20:04

I don't like how Criminal Minds is about 95% women being victimised and dying horribly at the hands of men.

Movingonmymind · 02/04/2016 20:09

I loved first series of Orange then seemed to sell out and focus loads on increasingly gratuitous girl on girl action, doubtless to attract the average male viewer after the surprise success of the first series. Such a shame and put me right off.

freshmint · 02/04/2016 20:13

Can I make a left field suggestion - Friday Night Lights. Really excellent

NameChange30 · 02/04/2016 20:13

The Fall has Gillian Anderson playing a badass female detective, but it's about a man who targets women, and his crimes are pretty grim, but... Gillian Anderson!

Broadchurch is also good because of Olivia Colman and her character.

whiteagle · 02/04/2016 20:20

I have enjoyed recently
Nashville - this would be my top pick - ideal for journey a bit soapy but the music is fab and time will fly past.
House of Cards
Orange ITNB - not amazing
The Bridge, Borgen, Killing though subtitles might be an issue on ipad
Older-
Six feet under
Sopranos ( needs a big commitment though)

TeamFinn · 02/04/2016 20:25

The Fall was great. A bit different but I really like Scott and Bailey - all female leads and written by a woman. I also love Vera. I'm a sucker for strong female characters.

AnotherEmma - I've avoided Broadchurch but will give it a go now. I love Olivia Colman.

Looly71 · 02/04/2016 20:27

Yes RomComPhooey you're right actually ruined it for me forever I often don't watch the ones like that but I'll certainly look at it in new light!

RomComPhooey · 02/04/2016 20:46

Sorry Looly. I just had to stop watching because I found it unnecessarily gratuitous.

The Fall was grim crime-wise, but the tense psychological cat & mouse between Gillian Anderson (girl crush!) and Jamie Dornan was utterly compelling.

KanyesVest · 02/04/2016 20:59

Just started watching Lucifer which is a bit silly but beautiful (Tom Ellis) cast to oggle. I liked the first season of Madam Secretary but fucking hell they are so bloody sanctimonious and holier than thou, I can't be doing with it any more. Mr Robot is excellent, very smart and genuinely interesting characters.

Looly71 · 02/04/2016 22:34

No problem Romcom you are right Smile

Howaboutthisone · 02/04/2016 22:46

Just another thought- Homeland?

NameChange30 · 02/04/2016 22:47

Yy to Homeland
And not just because Quinn

Lweji · 02/04/2016 23:10

I'm enjoying How to get away with murder. Legal based from the side of the defence and very strong female lead.
Also 100 Code, which is in Sweden but in English.

I'm a fan of Crossing Lines too.
I haven't got hooked on Code Black, and I'm an ER fan.

Scarydinosaurs · 03/04/2016 08:59

So many brilliant suggestions- thank you!

I've loved Homeland until this latest season. I have them stacked up on catchup but can't see myself getting round to it any time soon. Bring back Brody. The last few storylines have been predictable and tiresome.

Oh how I wish they would make a new season of 24.

Ir you enjoy some comedy, Laura's Mysteries can be fun. She separated from her husband due to cheating and is a kick arse detective with two kids. She's debating throughout whether to trust him or not and he's sort of trying to get her back

Then there's outrageous Devious Maids. Very entertaining and somewhat dark. It's almost like a soap and Latino but not quite.
