I was a bit underwhelmed tbh.

Mikako (sp?) made an awesome sugarcraft apple. That was my favourite bit, the rest if it not so much. Though having worked in a very upmarket restaurant kitchen (in a very menial role), it was great watching the chefs having to massively rein in their snark. Grin the young chef actually seemed to have a fairly collegiate approach - or was better at reining it in.

I loved it because I think the ideas they come up with can be amazing and the execution amazing. But I agree that the format, especially the scoring, needs some work. I've got Kings of Pastry on DVD, that is mind blowing

LizKeen · 30/03/2016 00:35

I enjoyed it...but I have a pastry qualification, so I am interested in that kind of thing.

Agree, it shouldn't be linked in any way to GBBO. It doesn't have the same format/location/feel. They are probably trying to launch off of GBBO's popularity but I think it will backfire.

Also agree with the scoring. Not necessary. Masterchef works fine without points...why fix what isn't broken?

TomK is a bit stilted, but not too bad. I met him once

Roussette · 30/03/2016 09:02

So agree with that feed Coco. My reasons are (not that anyone's interested but I'm just musing!)

  1. I can't warm to any of the judges, they come across as quite unpleasant
  2. The contestants are using the sort of equipment the home baker would never see or have
  3. Can't work out who is on what team and too much flitting about by the cameraman for me to make sense of any of it
  4. Ridiculously complicated recipes whereby I wouldn't even try anything
  5. Can't get behind any of the contestants because I can't work out who they are and which team they're on
  6. Ultra competitive and seem to want to the other teams to fail badly which is soooo not GBBO

That's it for now Grin

We watched it very late last night and whilst it was enjoyable, it was a big mistake to market it as anything to do with GBBO. I guess either way there would be comparisons but by doing it as a spinoff just highlights the differences.
Hated Dustin Hoffman, he seemed like a total knobface, he told the camera to fuck off and was pissed at everyone when it was him who was shit. His actual work wasn't too bad, I judged him far more on his shitty attitude.
I also didn't like the leader of the young team, he seemed quite patronising and what had happened to his hair?! I think maybe he is ginger and he dyed it brown?
He was also very bitchy about the other teams work, but they all were and I didn't like that. Even on masterchef the profs they compliment each other.
The team element whilst making sense in some ways, was awful in others. If they entered as individuals Dustin would be gone and Makiko could shine - she was really good. And I think being in teams is what 'allowed' them to be bitchy about their competitors.
I'll definitely watch, as someone who enjoys cooking shows it's fine as a stand alone.

MrFMercury · 30/03/2016 22:53

I agree with everything you've all said especially Fontella
We watched it with the kids and the bleeping was just annoying after a bit!

BlueJug · 31/03/2016 08:20

Agree with much of what has been said. Team element didn't work. Accents difficult. Uniforms should have been different. etc

I loved the second round: Apple Crumble with a story. Would have liked to have connected more with the contestants though. Makiko was wonderful - her sugarwork apple was beautiful. The Scots guy was watchable although v hard to understand. The rest blurred a bit.

No humour in the judging -although I loved Benoit's French accent!

Will watch next week though

Roussette · 31/03/2016 08:36

Look at this! (excuse daily mail link)

Perhaps they read my post on here as the programme started!

mrswhiplington · 31/03/2016 10:30

Not very impressed with this programme. I fell asleep about 8.30pm, which is early even for me.

I love GBBO and Masterchef but maybe this programme was a step too far. I can't say I'll be looking forward to the next one.

LemonRedwood · 06/04/2016 22:13

I thought I'd give this a 2nd chance with the 2nd episode.

I really dislike all three judges.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 06/04/2016 22:25

I liked it better this week, less sniping about the other teams from the contestants. I think I would like there to be a technical challenge round where they all make the same thing, the first round is ok as they are making three things but the second is too involved and drags on a bit.

thecatfromjapan · 06/04/2016 22:42

I enjoyed it. I loved seeing what these brilliant craftspeople could do.Smile

JolieColombe · 08/04/2016 14:04

I also enjoyed the second episode more, however the second round is making me twitchy - they're all constructing wonderful edifices to display their puds on, but out of huge lumps of chocolate! Presumably the puds are intended to be eaten and the chocolate just... looked at? All kinds of wrong.

jay55 · 08/04/2016 14:51

I found episode two so stressful to watch, and I don't bake at all. I wish the timescales were a bit more achievable so we could see them really excelling.

Davros · 08/04/2016 21:44

I enjoyed episode 2, didn't love it but enjoyed it. Good to see the squadies kicking the arse of the Savoy team and with no formal training!
