I thought it was good it became so political and Hollywood

Agree it's a travesty he ever got off

OP posts:
Cocolepew · 15/02/2016 22:11

real life and actors

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 15/02/2016 22:12

It's was a very difficult time in LA a few years after the riots, he was a sporting hero and the fear of him being found guilty was that the riots would happen again

And we excused to some extent domestic violence then and we still do now

Should have also said that the intimation by the defence was that the LAPD were institutionally racist and that Fuhrman - as a racist cop - had the opportunity to frame Simpson

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 15/02/2016 22:16

Not sure Cuba Gooding Jr is the right actor he is too small and old looking OJS is tall and big and used this to intimidate people

LovelyFriend · 15/02/2016 23:03

I missed it - what channel was it in?

Alambil · 15/02/2016 23:08

did he actually do it then? I don't remember anything about the case at all, other than hearing his name

BitOutOfPractice · 15/02/2016 23:10

I watched it with my elderly mother. I'd told her before it started that John Travolta was in it. Every time an actor appeared (including David Schwimmer and some black actors Shock) she asked if it was JT. I was scathing with her but when he actually appeared, I wasn't sure it was him!

homebythesea · 15/02/2016 23:10

The reason he was acquitted was that the largely black jury felt it was more important to put one over on the institutionally racist LAPD than to convict their "hero" OJ. The LAPD did cock things up a bit and Mark Furhman's past did not help. The glove didn't fit because it had been treated with various chemicals. The timeline did not support it having been planted. The evidence agsinstvOJ was overwhelming but the jury obviously clung to the largely immaterial factors which might cause "reasonable doubt" in idiots

OJ wrote a book called "if I did it"" basically setting out exactly how he did do it. The proceeds went to the victims families after a civil suit in which he was found liable for the deaths in the same evidence.

DH and I watched the trial every day in th early days if our relationship and have read every book/article etc ever since we are slightly obsessed

Lightbulbon · 15/02/2016 23:13

Well he wrote a book called 'if I did it' Hmm

And the families won a civil case against him

But he has never admitted it.

It was the polices fault he wasn't convicted. At least one of them was corrupt and tried to frame him, which really wasn't necessary-there was enough evidence to convict without the dodgy glove.

TheSpottedZebra · 15/02/2016 23:15

Was Robert Shapiro massively camp IRL, or was that how Travolta chose to play it?

Pipbin I love your Travolta description, and I love recycling too, so I am going to use it, and claim it as my own Grin

light the glove wasn't dodgy and there was no opportunity for Furhman to have planted it on the evidence. OJ was an actor albeit a crap one and played the glove trying on scene like an Oscar winner - all grimaces and straining.

MorrisZapp · 15/02/2016 23:18

That was like watching a made for TV movie on a wet Wednesday afternoon. David Schwimmer was bloody awful, and the heavy references to 'Kimmy' were cringetastic.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 15/02/2016 23:20

It was made by the American Horror Story team. Its ok so far. Liking the prosecutor, it really was a travesty.

homebythesea · 15/02/2016 23:30

What I did learn tonight was about the lie detector and the fact that the defence team knew from the get go that he probably did it.

ppandj · 16/02/2016 08:47

I've just caught up with it. I think it is a bit cringey in places with the kardashians, but overall I think it's ok. Cannot believe he got away with it tbh.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 16/02/2016 09:07

For the benefit of youngsters, Simpson was unanimously found guilty of murder on the balance of probabilities by a jury in a civil case brought by his victims' families. He is currently in jail for armed robbery, serving 9 years of a 33 year sentence, despite having attempted to overturn the conviction on three separate legal grounds including the claimed incompetence of his own legal team.

iwantanewcar · 16/02/2016 09:17

Like many on here I watched the trial live as much as I could. I was living in the States when it happened. I have no doubt he did it. There has never been a credible alternative suspect. OJ was a sporting hero and the Americans do love celebrity so that clouded views for a long time. It is all of the sub stories that are so interesting as well like the ex husband of the lead prosecutor. He decided to sue for full custody of their children during this trial!!

hollyisalovelyname · 16/02/2016 09:24

Pipbin a great description of John Travolta. Smile
I think he is the series producer also.
What happened to Nicole's children? Who raised them?
Did OJ ?
Do they keep in contact with OJ ?
I hope their lives turned out ok.

ApricotSorbet99 · 16/02/2016 09:26

This is actually a superb representation of what actually happened...for those who were too young or don't recall.

JT is "hamming it up" quite rightly because Shapiro was quite camp and flamboyant. Everyone is playing their parts really well - although I agree that CGjr is miscast because I just can't see him as the big, intimidating and handsome (sorry, but he was) OJ.

Just a note though....OJ never wrote the If I Did It book. Someone else did, but the publisher paid OJ $600,000 not to deny that he was the one who wrote it. He agreed because he needed the money and "Everyone already thinks I'm a murderer, anyway". In any event, what innocent person would put their name to that? He may as well have written it.

To me, it is beyond any possible doubt that he did it. His acquittal was thoroughly shameful - the evidence against him was so overwhelming. I remember being speechless watching the verdict live on BBC News.

But for you young whippersnappers new to the case....if it seems extraordinary, that's because it was. And there's much, much more to come. I have already seen next weeks....with the Bronco chase....and it's jawdropping.

Autumn2014 · 16/02/2016 09:38

I only watched bits of it as I was reading at the same time. Who was the woman he was bed with when he hiding out at the safe house before all the entourage arrived.

ApricotSorbet99 · 16/02/2016 09:46

Jennifer Barbereri (sp?) - his model girlfriend at the time.

Cocolepew · 16/02/2016 10:37

I saw an article online yesterday. His son and daughter went to college etc. The picture was of his DD Sydney, she lives in Florida . I think their Aunt brought them up.

Angeladelight · 16/02/2016 20:31

Just watched it now. It's a bit trashy but some parts I thought were good. Cuba Gooding Jr's shouting was a bit Hmm although I suppose anyone faced with prison (and possibly having just murdered two people) wouldn't be acting rationally.
