anyone watching?

love programmes like these

1- the 50's

A family gives up their 21st-century technology and travels back in time. As they enter the 50s, it's goodbye to the flat-screen TV and hello to a piano and some darning.

I thought 3 day week would gone on for months wasn't it because of minors strike?

YouMakeMyDreams · 17/02/2016 17:54

Ava I've loved you MIL since the 50's episode she looks like she's up for a right laugh. She's totally embracing her brief involvement love it.
I've just finished watching the 70's episode. I actually like this family. I liked the last one but the mothers complete incompetence at everything started to bug me a bit.
I do think this mum was rude walking out of church she could have just sucked it up and spared s thought for the real 50's housewives who some of, probably resented their presence in church every week in the same way she did. At least she only had to do it once. But all in all I quite like them. I did at first think the did sounded a bit bratty en she said something that reminded me of my own did and realised she is probably showing off a wee bit and that 16 is still pretty young.

AvaLeStrange · 17/02/2016 18:11

Thanks You.

Tbh MIL and I have had a lot some ups and downs over the years but you can't fault her on her ability to get stuck in Grin. I sometimes think she would genuinely like to go back to the 50's! I thought she was brilliant at Margate too.

The kids are very privileged, like lots of teens these days, but isn't that we all we want - for our children to have better lives and greater opportunities than we did? They are both very sweet in RL.

YouMakeMyDreams · 17/02/2016 18:26

Yeah she totally seemed to be loving the 50's found her and the other women reminiscing st the coronation party quite touching. It seems to be a period of fond memories.
She does seem like an erm formidable woman but totally up for this.

I think your nephew is sweet and such a smart kid. I think your niece is well 16. That transition between childhood and adulthood and trying to seem oh so grown up just like we all would have at that age.

ChessieFL · 17/02/2016 18:52

I am enjoying this programme and like the family. It has been bothering me though what the dad did about his job though - did he have to give notice to all his existing mindees then start again with a whole new set of mindees once filming finished? After all you can't really take extended leave from being a childminder, can't imagine the parents he deals with would have been too chuffed with that! And wouldn't Ofsted have had something to say about the alterations to the house? Although I suppose if it was all put back to normal before any children went back there it would be ok.

I did think the mum walking out of church was a bit off but I wondered if she had been told to do that by the producers. I'm always a bit cynical with these programmes how much of the reaction is real and how much is set up.

AvaLeStrange · 17/02/2016 19:13

She does seem like an erm formidable woman

Yep, that's MIL!

The church thing is not as straightforward as it looked, but SIL seems to be fairly unfazed by the pasting she's taking online on that front.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/02/2016 20:29

they said in last nights he was a sahd - but he wasnt-he worked as a cm at home

agree not sure how he didnt cm for 8 weeks etc as what did those famillies do for childcare

can you ask bil? is you sil on here? have you outed yourself? Grin

OP posts:
AvaLeStrange · 17/02/2016 21:14

I've no idea. Don't think SIL is on here.

They are on very good terms with all their mindees families and he's still working. I suspect some of them may have term time only jobs.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/02/2016 21:30

really enjoyed this one as i was born 1973, i rem the round dial phone and making calls in the hall, but that was prob middle / late 80's for me when i was 10/13

rem years ago my parents said they brought their house i grew up in for £7.5k ish , they really liked another house in a diff part of town but was £300 more and just couldnt afford it

those houses now go for £1/1.5/2 million Shock

blondes faints

rem the spirographs and playing outside on my bikes and cycling to friends - but that was prob early 80's 9/10yrs

loved playing spot the ball

loat leaving children alone in cars while adults in the pub

putting up the tent was funny, tho not sure how they managed to fit their bikes in the boot of that car and their space hoppers

LOVED playing the 1st computer game with the bat hitting the ball Grin

and were you at the party ava? if not why not, assuming dad is your hubbys brother?

AvaLeStrange · 17/02/2016 21:54

Neither DH or their older bro were involved & I don't think Steph's siblings were either.

Davros · 17/02/2016 22:06

I was worried that this week's episode would give me The Rage as I was 10 in 1970 and still say that the 70s were the best!! We loved the power cuts and used to have seances. I recognised Fife Robertson from that home brew item. They ignored Punk Shock and got the timing of Disco wrong, it was earlier than 1978, although Saturday Night Fever was 1978, it was dated at the time. Punk was partly a reaction to Disco. I do remember Roller Disco coming in around 1978. I went to Bow Wow Wow's first gig at a roller disco in the Galtymore Club in Hammersmith and remember Marilyn, Philip Salon etc whirling round the dance floor!

ppeatfruit · 18/02/2016 09:28

To be fair Davros they also ignored the Beatles and punk was nowhere as popular as them!

Oh god I remember everyone being into disgusting 'homebrewed' beer not my thing at all.

Davros · 18/02/2016 10:26

True ppfruit*. I wanted the 60s and 70s to be MY memories!

ppeatfruit · 18/02/2016 10:33

What I find funny are the people who are 'leftovers' from Punk or whatever, you still see some people walking about with a thousand piercings and pink apache hairstyles Shock.

I remember in the 60s women wearing those 'wartime' hairstyles too. I'm not a fashion victim but it's nice to move with the times moderately!!

Pipbin · 18/02/2016 10:41

I loved the 70s episode and I adore the family. The kids are lovely and seem to have a brilliant relationship with their parents.
It makes me and DH sad as we will never be parents and they are the kind of children we would love to have had.

ppeatfruit · 18/02/2016 11:29

Sad Pipbin

AvaLeStrange · 18/02/2016 12:05

Flowers Pip

Samcro · 18/02/2016 12:09

i have enjoyed it. I think the family are really nice
I loved the way the girl like the 70's and said she enjoyed being with her brother.

Pipbin · 18/02/2016 14:05

Thanks chaps.

I too loved how the girl talked about how she liked spending time with her brother and he got all embarrassed and dismissive.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/02/2016 11:11
  1. The 80's

The family embrace the 80s, where TV and shopping dominated our leisure time. It is also the decade where technology arrives in our homes in a significant way.

Kids Daisy and Seth are thrilled by the new VCR and home computer, and there is even a pager for Steph, who is now a shoulder-padded 80s businesswoman.

Dad Rob has got plenty to occupy him - when he is not trying out the kids' CB radio, his home sunbed, or having his highlights done, he is shopping for a Don Johnson makeover with 80s fashion guru Caryn Franklin. But what does the arrival of all this stuff mean for family life?

Clawdy · 23/02/2016 11:25

Not working for me, I need to like the family, and I'm afraid I don't. Bring back the Robshaws please.

5Foot5 · 23/02/2016 12:56

There is a family near us where the parents must be at least late 40s and still dress in the Punk style. But you know what? They look really good. I often saw the woman on her way in to work and I thought she always looked very stylish - pink spiky hair or not. And I wasn't even a Punk fan.

LIZS · 23/02/2016 20:31

So far we had the wallpaper in dbros room plus coordinating bedding and pil still use the china with the poppies!

MsJuniper · 23/02/2016 20:43

I love the dad, he is so excited about being in a decade he grew up in and I loved the bit with the Royal Wedding and his mum.
