anyone watching?

love programmes like these

1- the 50's

A family gives up their 21st-century technology and travels back in time. As they enter the 50s, it's goodbye to the flat-screen TV and hello to a piano and some darning.

I'm watching it now (SkyPlussed it at the time) and am enjoying it as much as the Robshaws' series, although the mother is a bit annoying at times, less likeable than Rochelle. Seth is fab, very can-do and upbeat. Daisy looks stunning in everything she wears, and seems happy to be dressed as a teen of the time, as the Robshaw girls did. The dad is wonderful.

I'd love a series focusing on an unmarried mum or an immigrant family (possibly both on the same series - they could be neighbours). A kind of "outsider" series rather than a middle class nuclear family.

I know they were around, our local park had a big one, but we went to centerparcs in 90s and there was nothing like that

Our kids went on zip wires in the 90s Feeling not in Centre parcs because we didn't go to one , but lots of places had them.

I didn't enjoy this as much as all of the other series, it felt too rushed, they sort of showed one thing then they were on to the next, no real thoughts on it, seeing how hard it was to use and whether it was worth it etc. Centerparcs for example, they showed a clip of them all on bikes and then the did the zip wire thing (which wouldn't have been there in the 90s) and that was it. What wbout the kids being able to go off on bikes on their own because it felt safe and there was no traffic etc, I think that was one of the biggest things about there, because there were more cars on the road and more worry about kids being out on their own and people wanted that back for their kids

Oh & another thing!
70+ hrs a week of housework in the 50s???

I guess it depends on the type of house & ornaments/brass/silver.

I remember my mum washed once a week only.

We just didn't have as many clothes as now.

Stuff was "spot cleaned" if it could be.

Certainly she didn't seem to always have piles of ironing.

I guess I was thinking that they might as well have been riding bikes in that park!

I supposed I was thinking of the lack of exercise.

It was sort of like computer screens for outdoors!

And when the daughter finally twigged that by pissing about on her phone so much when with friends then she's wasting the time she's spending with them!

Perhaps kids grow out of that though.

I know my two don't tend to ignore their friends for their phone anymore.

Also, any messages tend to be a conversation about something that then ends iyswim.
(Like a phone call)

It was a weird looking skateboard wasn't it diddl ? The problem with bikes is the traffic. Hopefully in the future they'll have proper bike lanes like in Amsterdam Grin

Yes the future was rather "now", wasn't it?

I also thought it was quite sad when Seth & his mate were outside with the drone & the thing with wheels that you balance onBlush

He said taht they were worth going outide for or something.

I would have thought that they might get quite boring after a while.

Why not go for a bike ride??

All our Nigel ,Roomba?, does is eat carpet edging, and electrical wiring, also it keeps on loosing its brushing power so they have to be replaced and it needs emptying all the time (we do live in a very dusty stone house).

I need to use the calories up hoovering properly Grin. "The Future" is made up of people with huge bodies Grin what's so great about that?

Only just got around to watching this.

The piano.

I wanted to cry!

It is very skewed, isn't it?

I mean my mum gave up work when she married (late 50s).

Then when back when I started 2ndry school (mid 70s).

Not out of necessity either but because she wanted to.

I don't think it was odd either.

I thought the daughter looked just like her brother with her shorter hair

I wasn't keen on the Dad's outfit this week - I didn't think it matched his personality. He seemed a lot of fun and didn't take himself seriously.

Agree, they were a very nice family.

Yes Pipbin I wondered who it was when I first saw her with the short hair.

Fashion is so fluid now that we can look almost how we want to nowadays. (I'm amazed that those lowslung trousers for boys seem to still be fashionable for some young men!)

I think the daughter looked better in her old fashioned clothes to be honest. Not the clothes so much but the makeup.

Lovely family. I'm going to miss them.

Yes but an old friend is who undergoing heavy treatment, and I haven't spoken to for ages rang and I HAD to talk to her while it was on in silence in front of me !

I noticed the roomba hoover which we've had for a year? So it's not the future as you say, and we've got a wonderful lawnmower that is chargeable. The hoover is annoying the lawnmower isn't Grin. I'll watch the repeat on Sunday.

NotJanine · 09/03/2016 09:09

Anyone watch it last night?

Can't believe they are still showing the automatic lawnmower and vacuum cleaner as gasdgets of the future, they've been around for years and are obviously not popular!

Wasn't sure if the family had been dressed up this week or if they were their normal clothes?

I'm really enjoying this programme. It is extremely nostalgic for me and not just because of the time travel. The whole family are lovely.

I also went to Centre Parcs in the '90s!

I loved seeing the footage from Ground Force / Changing Rooms. I was hoping to have seen a bit more 90s music and tv, such as Top Of The Pops /the rise of 90s girl bands!

5foot there's a Ground Force front garden near us. It's changed over time but you can still see the structure almost 20yrs on. I always have a little peek when I drive past.

Terracotta!!! Our sitting room had a shag pile fitted carpet in that colour, when we moved in, in the early 80s Shock I thought it was left over from the 70s. Does anyone watch the Interior Challenge? it seems that bleedin' orange is back again!!!! Shock
