Anyone else watching? I am really enjoying it, and have either read more Dickens than I realised, or at least the right books.
I had always imagined Little Nell to be a bit younger though.

Oops, he said some/most(?) of it would go on debts, didn't he?

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 20/02/2016 19:23

I would love it if Compeyson doesn't show up to the wedding because he's been murdered overnight. Hope its painful, and dogs piss on his dying corpse. Abusive asshole.

Abraid2 · 20/02/2016 20:17

Fanny Biggetywitch is made up. Not in Dickens.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/02/2016 20:22

I loved the Inspector and Mrs Emily Cratchit - it was wonderfully done by both of them

I'm really going to miss this. Well done BBC!!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/02/2016 20:29

I hope Bob Cratchit never finds out. He is such a good person he'd either think she has to confess or at the least he'd be plagued by guilt.

I don't know why they made up Fanny Biggetywich. There are minor female characters who could have filled the role -Pleasant Riderhood from Our Mutual Friend for one ; and she has the bonus of being Mr Venus' love interest in that book.

glamorousgrandmother · 21/02/2016 09:09

Compeyson won't get her money unless he marries her so he must be intending to turn up but be prevented by Arthur or Pocket.

Yes to Bucket adopting Oliver - he said he has his wife had not been 'blessed with children'.

We need to know what happened to Honoria's baby.

diddl · 21/02/2016 09:39

"Compeyson won't get her money unless he marries her"

That's what I was thinking.

And then why would he give Arthur a handout?

diddl · 21/02/2016 10:01

I suppose this is the problem with trying to make up backstories!

She bought the brewery from Arthur, didn't she?

Perhaps that was the plan & they were to share the money?

Perhaps he had to pretend to want to marry her for that to happen?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/02/2016 16:28

In the book Compeyson was in league with Arthur to defraud Miss Havisham of part of her fortune, with no intention of marrying her. Clearly she was still left a very rich woman but here Compeyson seems intent on going through with it.

diddl · 21/02/2016 16:33

They defrauded her by getting her to pay too much for the brewery, didn't they?

Maybe with the pretence to marry he got gifts or jewellry he could sell or something, but it's still hard to see how they could get much?

I think I just have a block where this is concerned!

diddl · 21/02/2016 18:52

Finally!

Someone's told her he's married!

diddl · 21/02/2016 19:19

Oliver Twist was played by Leonardo Dickens!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/02/2016 19:21

Oh my. That was heartbreaking. Oh Amelia oh Arthur, oh Honoria.

I was in tears several times.
They must be going for a second series.

The acting is splendid all round.

Bookridden · 21/02/2016 19:44

I started this, but must admit to having lost interest. Can someone just tell me who did murder Marley?

diddl · 21/02/2016 19:55

It was Mrs Cratchitt with a rolling pin!!

diddl · 21/02/2016 19:58

I actually found tonight's really disappointing.

I suppose knowing what it was leading up to.

Didn't really feel sorry for Arthur, he was so smug.
Was glad to see the back of Compeyson.

bakeoffcake · 21/02/2016 20:16

I thought it was great. They were obviously tying up all the 'loose ends' so it was a bit contrived at the very end, but they had to do that.

Nancy singing stole the show for me.

I do hope there's a second series.

Gruntfuttock · 21/02/2016 20:29

LassWiTheDelicateAir I agree with every word of your post. Those screams of pure pain from Amelia Havisham brought tears to my eyes.
What a wonderful series. I loved it so much although found the episode/s with Honoria's baby and Frances' deception very harrowing. But the acting, the writing, the sets and everything were superb.
I was excited when I first heard about the series and it didn't disappoint at all. I'm hoping for a second one.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/02/2016 20:31

Oh no diddl I really felt sorry for Arthur. Why didn't Jaggers say what he did long before now?

Bakeoff I agree about Nancy's singing.

member · 21/02/2016 21:00

I loved this though don't know the original works with the exception of film versions of Oliver and a Christmas Carol.

The episode with the birth of Esther was haunting as were Miss Havisham's howls of pain. Was slightly disappointed that Compeyson got away with £10,000 though.

diddl · 21/02/2016 21:11

I have felt quite sorry for Arthur most of the time, it was tonight when he was all happy thinking (assuming) that Amelia would just accept him bak after all that he had done.

CeeBeeBee · 21/02/2016 22:15

Poor Arthur miscalculated so he is now worse off than ever.
Tuppence was excellent as Miss Havisham.
Someone further up the thread said that the baby could be bought up by Miss Havisham and I can see that happening with the guardian at present being Mr Jaggers. Those who have read Great Expectations will know that Estella has a close connection with Mr Jaggers. This is of course, a plot diversion from the books.

CeeBeeBee · 21/02/2016 22:23

Loved how they borrowed Bucket's new case from Sherlock.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/02/2016 22:34

That would be a major plot diversion and would affect the Magwitch/Molly story in GE.

So far they have not changed major plot lines, which, unfortunately, makes Nancy's singing even more poignant.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/02/2016 22:55

Why would Estella be a major plot diversion?

Is it ever described where she comes from?

I'd bet money it's Honorias baby becomes Estella.
