Orphan I have a poppy too.... I volunteered last year removing the poppies and was there the last day when the youngest and eldest volunteers pulled the last poppy.
So emotive, so humbling to have been there will never forget it.
Have mine in a hurricane lamp indoors.

orphan · 30/10/2015 22:05

Wow lola what an experience. Just seeing the poppies was moving but to be actually involved would have been incredible.
I think I should bring my poppy in for the winter; I'm not sure if it's frost resistant.

Alwaysfrank · 30/10/2015 22:29

My daughter came back so moved from her visit to the battlefields and cemeteries in France and Belgium that we stopped off at the Canadian Memorial in Vimy on the way back from our family summer holiday later that year. These places are so humbling. Personally I couldn't get over the massive craters that are still clearly visible in the landscape today. It makes it all so much more real and brings home the absolute horror.

On a lighter note, I live very close to rugby HQ and we are off to the fanzone tomorrow to soak up the atmosphere. Last time I was there a former rugby international declared that I was "hot" in front of an audience. I think it was more to do with my menopausal glow in a rather warm marquee under lights than anything else!

The road closures have been mildly annoying but you learn to work around them. Hope your son gets where he needs to woof!

Evening ladies. I've not been to any of the war graves in northern France but I've been to the Jewish cemetery in Berlin which was something we felt we had to do but was emotional and upsetting as you might imagine. Also went to a church in Berlin where many of the Jews, sensing what was coming, converted to Christianity. I remember reading a lot of the letters they had on display from relatives who forgave the Nazis for what they did. I ended up in tears and we had to come away.

One of my ex-bosses left today as he'd chosen to take voluntary redundancy and I had to sign all his leaving papers etc. I thought I might cry but in the end, as we were interrupted as I was saying goodbye, I dealt with it better than I expected. He was one of the senior managers I had the most respect for. He was good with handling his staff and managing projects - something quite unusual I've found over the years. Most managers seem to be good at one or the other, but rarely both.

We sold all the carved pumpkins one of my colleagues brought in and I hope everyone got them home in one piece!

Richtea19 · 30/10/2015 23:08

Sadly no Army/RAF Poppy sellers were spotted today. No one at London Victoria, most disappointing. Such a lovely day with my friend, and far too much to drink! Why is it that every gorgeous man I see is about a third of my age!!!!! Loads of trendy beards (itchy)! And tight ball crusher trousers... Oh to be young again!

Zzzzzzz before round two. Tea and Fortnum and Masons tomorrow!, feel like a spoilt brat but it's a belated birthday pressy from a friend. Maybe more luck with the Poppy sellers tomorrow?!

KellyHb · 30/10/2015 23:10

Sorry you had an upsetting day at work ilove. It is sad when someone who you really respect and value leaves at work. Hope you feel better about it before you go back next week.

KellyHb · 30/10/2015 23:19

Sounds like yours having a great time rich I wouldn't mind a peek at some tight ball crusher trousers especially CJ's.

I was just thinking this evening most lads up here have big beards. Most look like they could do with a good trim.

Just turned over in time to watch LT being electrocuted in EE. Then someone near the end of the episode said 'You got a death wish or something?' Definate OG moment.

Ilovelblue · 30/10/2015 23:28

Richtea our office is full of young twenty and thirty something men with horrible bushy beards making them look far older than their years - like Captain Birdseye in woof's chapter yesterday! And I definitely know what you mean about all the fanciable men being far too young! We had a joke about doing a calendar of the semi-naked firemen variety with hunky men in our office and could only get as far as June, so thin on the ground are the decent ones. I suppose they would have to do two months each!

Morning all and Happy Halloween! Halloween Smile

We do have a scary job this morning of going to Asda with the boys having no pull ups on for the first time! Hope not many mad dashes for the toilet.

Trick or treating later with DD and her friends but I should be back in time for SCD.

I wonder which Halloween shenanigans BA will be up to tonight??

Rhubarb01 · 31/10/2015 09:00

Morning - I've been a bit busy this week so have had a catch up skim through - lots of different topics this week.

I went to see Spectre last night and really enjoyed it. I think it's probably Daniel Craig's last outing and the story or shall we say DC's story as Bond is quite cleverly concluded. I think his four films could be seen as something a bit like the Bourne films because there is a story running through them all. I liked all the references to old Bond films in it and have to say that even the theme tune which not everybody likes, makes sense as part of the story. Like others have said I think he's at the limits of playing Bond (great actor and would like to see him in other stuff) and that if they continue - which they are bound to - they need to cast someone a lot younger. I did start laughing at the 'romantic' scenes, QS it aint - not good! I still think the new Bond should be early thirties so that they have a bit of maturity but some longevity too! Think we've been here before haven't we and we know who it should be.

Babies - oh goodness, I can sympathise all round. My eldest was a bit of a monkey for getting settled at night as a baby. The first few weeks she suffered from colic and used to scream. My second night home after having her was spent sitting in a rocking chair I had been loaned with a rigid screaming baby through the small hours while I sat there crying myself thinking what in god's name was I thinking having a baby! Then I had twins and so three children under the age of three and life was a blur for about four years. DS was a horror and used to work himself up into a screaming frenzy if he was hungry (all the time) and would scream so much that even when you got him milk or food he couldn't calm down enough to drink or eat it. The best advice really is don't worry about what other people are doing or saying they are doing because you have to do it your own way, take one day at a time and don't try to do too much. I used to try to set myself one small target a day - which might have been get out to the park with all three children for an hour - and if I managed that I gave myself a pat on the back even if we hadn't got there until 4pm. So it's definitely small steps and there is no right way there's only your way.

Tower of London poppies - yes I've got one and it's still in the box. We've done the battlefield visits in France and been to the cemeteries. My great grandfather is buried there and we've visited twice on both occasions with my parents and the children. We're the only members of the family that have ever been so there was something right about all of us being there together and it was a beautiful, quiet spot. It is so difficult to imagine what must have happened there a hundred years ago. I think for the children it gives them a personal sense of what Remembrance Sunday/Day is about because they can identify with something and have a person in mind.

Well, that's my catching up. Will be back here later for the Halloween SCD if anyone else is not out and about bewitching. Hope there aren't too many interruptions to SCD - last year my dog was turned into a shaking, trembling jelly by the constant knocks on the door - each one requires a massive amount of over-excited barking and growling and I was actually quite worried about him - by contrast thunder and fireworks don't bother him at all!

Richtea19 · 31/10/2015 09:38

Glad you are well rhu. I also bought one of the Tower of London poppies, I stuck it in the back garden, it looks a bit lost without the other hundreds of thousands!

I've never visited the war graves but my eldest did with the school for a history/French trip. He found it incredibly moving and for a teenager I was rather touched by this. Our younger generation need to know and understand the sacrifices that were made.

I'm sitting on a train heading up to Charing Cross, and I hope I have better luck with the army poppy sellers!

I am really hoping I will be back in time for SCD, although I suspect I will be watching it on catch up (at least I can FF through Tess's dreadful commentary when she wont let go of the celebrities hand!

Hope all the trick or treating goes well Halloween Confused

orphan · 31/10/2015 13:57

Lucky you richtea. Hope it's a cream tea with prosecco. And if you're really lucky another sort of cream tea on the way home with an armed forces poppy seller...Wink

kuiakaituhi · 31/10/2015 14:37

It's 3.30 in the morning here and like most of the rest of NZ, I'm up waiting for the Rugby WC Final. I guess Rugby is to us what Football is to England. We are fanatical, as a rule. Am a bit worried about the Aussies.

I have friends coming to watch and have just put a tray of cheese and onion scones into the oven...mental or what at this hour of the morning? They smell good though.

Woof I hope your mission to invade the All Black dressing rooms goes well, but please watch the poor boys. I don't want them coming over all unnecessary and getting overheated!! Especially BEFORE the match. Perhaps you could wait till half time, give them an energising boost?

icemistOBE · 31/10/2015 14:56

Afternoon. Got the card for BA today. Can I do a quick check on who wants their name on it.

Been shopping today and got 2 presents for Christmas [santa]

Nickel45 · 31/10/2015 15:39

Our Girl and Captain James Addicts part XXVIII - Long my he Reign
KellyHb · 31/10/2015 16:11

Running out the door for trick or treating and read your post ice Yes can I have my name on plse.

cjwoofwoof · 31/10/2015 16:24

Ditto ice don't want BA thinking I've decompressed!

Ooh kuia good to see the ABs have re-enacted our changing room love dance before kickoff, although their impressions of my contorted face were a little unflattering but surprisingly lifelike when you think of the size of the squad I was faced with... Grin It's done the trick though - those Aussies are running scared in a similar manner to said pre-match Kiwi changing room intrusion. I've got a better method of entrapment at half time though - just fetching the tow rope and duct tape from the back of my car and about to sneak back in...

cjwoofwoof · 31/10/2015 16:37

kuia do you think the ABs could still win with three players on the pitch? I have plans for the other 12 at half time which might make them a bit tardy for the second half...although they'll probably be grateful to get back to a little light hearted rugby final after I'm done.

Ooh I say Daniel Carter has just scored a penalty - think I might gonna move him up my half time rub down list before that big bear Nonu Wink

MaddieMoo82 · 31/10/2015 17:05

Oh yes to being on the card please ice thank you Flowers
Beautiful afternoon here rambling around on the moors with the DS (dressed as a skeleton) in the sling and the dog. Felt like July not end of October.
Dan Carter is looking quite fresh woof he obviously enjoyed your half time rub down Grin

Richtea19 · 31/10/2015 17:54

Yes pls ice for the BDay card.
Still no Army sightings at the mainline stations! Think that wicked pixie took them all home last week Wink.

orphan plenty of clotted and jam spread thickly this afternoon, but unfortunately just on a fruit scone! One measly glass of champagne, my friend isn't as hardcore as me! I'll be home shortly so will crack open the prosecco!

Rhubarb01 · 31/10/2015 18:36

Present in time for SCD although feeling a bit crook as our friends down under would say. Looking forward to the shenanigans.

Rhubarb01 · 31/10/2015 18:37

Oh dear the dog's doing his demented act! I need earphones!

orphan · 31/10/2015 18:43

Yes please to my name on ice if it's not too late. Perhaps also precise coordinates as to where to locate me in case he wants to verify my superfan credentials?

richtea FRUIT SCONE??? How blasphemous! Please tell me they at least gave you the option of a plain one?

Rhubarb01 · 31/10/2015 18:44

I'll try to keep up the monologue. Oh goodness Gleb looks like King Antonine tonight! Katie looks like Anita Dobson and Kellie looks like she's stepped out of St Trinians!
