ITV’s six episode thriller series Unforgotten from former ITV drama executives Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes’ fledgling indie Mainstreet Pictures will premiere on Thursday October 8th at 9pm, it has been announced.

Penned by Undeniable scribe Chris Lang, Unforgotten tells the story of an 39 year old cold investigation into the murder of a boy who was killed in 1976. The modern day investigation is run by DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, who must re-examine the evidence and investigate the key suspects – Robert Greaves, Frank Philip Cross, Lizzie Wilton and Eric Slater – in order to close the case. The series utilises a multi-stranded narrative, set in different parts of the country, which explores and connects each of the principle characters.

The six-parter is produced by Mainstreet Pictures and features a large cast that includes Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars), Nicola Walker (Last Tango In Halifax), Trevor Eve (Waking The Dead), Bernard Hill (The Grid), Ruth Sheen (Our Girl), Tom Courtenay (The Dresser), Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Brian Bovell (Death in Paradise), Cherie Lunghi (Casualty), Hannah Gordon (Hustle), Claire Goose (Mount Pleasant) Tamzin Malleson (Midsomer Murders), Peter Egan (Downton Abbey), and Frances Tomelty (Catastrophe). Ripper Street helmer Andy Wilson was the director.

The TV seemed to be timing out a lot tonight so that was disjointed for me, but what I did see was excellent. I need to watch again on catch up and maybe episode 4 as well again...

Would Jimmy not have been dead when Nick was at the pub on NYE or have I got my dates muddled?

I think FR Rob is a much nastier piece of work than he originally seemed and I'm not ruling out something more between Eric and Jimmy.

So sad about Lizzie, the monologue about a whole life being a knock on the door makes me think she was involved directly.

Lots of loose ends to tie up... Can't wait until next week.

ateacupofgin · 05/11/2015 23:35

I kind of agree cherry tree I think Eric is in the closet... Not sure his wife found out but maybe he was involved with Fr Rob or maybe Fr Rob was responsible for a death. I found his threat to the bishop chilling as it was so u expected and unlike the gentler soul he seemed a few weeks ago.

I can't wait for next week! I think I feel most sorry for Lizzie, as she is someone who had truly redeemed herself, made a new, good life for herself. She also came clean most quickly (sign of deeply wanting redemption).

I think this week's message was 'how can people just carry on living a life, knowing what they've done?' Comes across most strongly with Lizzie, and Father Greaves the ones obviously most affected by their guilt - and least with FrankieC and Slater - who will do any to cover up what they've done.

Bloody good series.

Optimist1 · 06/11/2015 07:30

I agree, Greenwood - it's excellent. I'm particularly enjoying the differing ways each of the characters is coping with the aftermath of Jimmy's demise and how they're unravelling in different ways. Top quality work from so many quality actors. The pace is satisfying too - one more episode to go and the ends are already starting to be tied up. I predict no unseemly rush in the last fifteen minutes.

Floundering · 06/11/2015 08:21

Blonde that's the fun of this thread, we all see & miss different things don't we & it's so fast moving in terms of clues it's a real blink & you miss it sometimes. Love it !

carabos · 06/11/2015 09:03

I think Yosser Fr Hughes saying to the distractingly fat bishop that he could still snap him in two is a clue that Hughes has a violent past that pre-dates his entry to the priesthood. I reckon he got God while in prison for some violent offence and he worked with the other baddies in the Fenwicks' gang.

fascicle · 06/11/2015 09:16

Another very good episode. (Although definitely a stretch to say there had been another victim at the end of episode 4, when they were relying on the words of Claire Slater and hadn't yet found a body.)

I think they will need to reinterview Jo Jo - it looks like both Jimmy and Robert Greaves were asked for money to pay for an abortion.

Sir Philip's son Josh was very naive to send his business associate to see/help his father, then be surprised/horrified that the result was the bumping off of Fenwick.

Interesting point, carabos. The 'snapping in two' comment definitely seemed odd, given the construction of the bishop and their relative sizes!

sadwidow28 · 06/11/2015 09:37

I am thinking the same thing as cherrytree - that Eric Slater is a closet gay.

We were right about Jo-Jo having given birth to the baby (now 38 yrs old - Thea). The Father Rob story almost appears to be a sub-plot within the murder story. Perhaps he was just the catalyst to the series of events like I suggested last week. Hmmm......

Now who is Eric Slater going to name next week? Is Sir Philip too obvious?

I hope someone fishes Lizzie out of the Thames - I really like her. Suicide is too much for robbing Jimmy of his £50 so I am thinking that she was part of the murdering gang.

Jimmy died in July 1976

Nick died New Year's Eve 1978

If anyone is re-watching and can't figure out the dialogue (I struggled with Sir Philip's mumbling last night) the transcription has been posted.

The Guardian review mentioned Chris Lang's previous 2-part mini-series (another cold case) so....... to keep you all going until next week, I have found it for you!

Undeniable

Attending an antenatal clinic at the local General Hospital Jane Phillips suddenly finds herself confronted by a man she is adamant killed her mother, 23 years earlier. Despite being just seven years old when she witnessed the killing, she’s determined to bring the man she believes is responsible to justice.

Ooh yes I remember that!

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 06/11/2015 10:43

Ooh thanks sadwidow - I'll have a watch of that Smile

Cerseirys · 06/11/2015 10:48

Was it ever established what happened to Lizzie's skinhead ex? Is he still alive or did he die years ago? I can't remember if they covered that or not.

EeyoresTail · 06/11/2015 10:52

Just a thought but maybe there might have been more dead bodies in the garden if Eric Slater hadn't had his accident Shock

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 06/11/2015 11:39

Vincent Erskine died in prison 14 years ago from Hepatitis C.

I think it might be Claire Slater who did the murders and Eric is covering for her.

I think Lizzie might have disappeared and left her suitcase so it looks like she committed suicide.

Fiderer · 06/11/2015 11:40

The focus is on the Slaters and the premise of Eric being gay. Also his knowing that Jimmy was working as a male prostitute and being near the pub where Nick was.

Wonder if Claire was involved - Jimmy was killed by a blow to the head, could have been her. And her telling her son that Eric couldn't hurt anyone anymore could mean not hurting her and the children. The memories she's trying to suppress could be of all that.

His saying at the end he knows who killed them could mean he'd say it was her, knowing that her mental state would make her unfit to stand trial/be convicted.

So Fr Rob was Jo-jo related.

Lizzie was guilt at her racist past coming out.

Sir Trevor was acknowledging his facade of respectability crumbling - with maybe underlying feelings of remorse/regret. His breaking down was unexpected, perhaps ordering the Turks to silence Fenwick brought him back to the past he'd put behind him.

cherrytree63 · 06/11/2015 12:48

Do we know who Carol is yet?

Or how Eric had his accident? (Wild card guess...Claire ran him over with the Spyder on discovering his gay dalliance).

I think the police took a huge risk bursting into the Slaters party on the word of a confused woman.

I'm watching every episode twice and still spotting new things!

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 06/11/2015 12:54

Carol is the sister of Claire I believe. The son said she was in America but we don't know if that is true.

sadwidow28 · 06/11/2015 12:57

Also his knowing that Jimmy was working as a male prostitute and being near the pub where Nick was.

I didn't remember that Eric Slater also knew about Jimmy's male prostitution. I only remembered that Mackie (a former resident of Arlingham House) told the police that Jimmy was working as a male prostitute.

But you are absolutely correct:

Cassie: Because Jimmy's friend says not only did you pretty much know everything the residents were up to, but that you'd told him you'd seen Jimmy servicing a male client down an alley behind a Hampstead "queer pub".

Now, when I did the flashback screenshots last week, Eric Slater remembered Jimmy smiling at him through the office window. Was Jimmy 'servicing' Eric?

I reposted this one on page 22 of this thread because I DO feel it is significant:

I struggled with the mumbling too. the sound is very off at times. who has Sir Phillip arranged to be killed? I didn't get that bit at all as I couldn't understand what was being said Robert was obviously a thug in his younger days - Eric was gay, I believe so anyway.
JO - jo, sounds as though she was telling Jimmy and Robert the baby was theirs in order to obtain money.
Would you keep so many records if you had murdered someone though? I know they said ' its the bookkeeper in you' but that was a bit far fetched. he isn't stupid and most people wouldn't have statements that old, not just normal bank ones anyway.( I bet your all going to say, I have stuff that old in the loft now! lol) HIs poor wife though, all those years harbouring a secret, but the fact she now has dementia means nothing can be done, anything she says will be thrown out of court.
brilliant show though, despite the poor quality sound at times. Nicola walker is so good - they have all been excellent. Not since Broadchurch one have I been so hooked. ( I even read the book of that too)

Cerseirys · 06/11/2015 14:05

Agree, I can barely understand a word that comes out of Trevor Eve's mouth!

The80sweregreat · 06/11/2015 14:28

Is Carol jo jo's daughter?

Fiderer · 06/11/2015 14:44

Jo-Jo's daughter is called Thea.

I think Carol is Claire Slater's sister who moved abroad.
