Anyone be watching tonight?
I'm really looking forwards :)

Agree with you Steppemum, it's the hidden sugar that's shocking. Just looked at our cereals and they all have added sugar, even so-called healthy ones like Bran Flakes and Bitesize Shredded Wheat.

Freeandsinglewater · 03/09/2015 22:03

I find that we don't have sugary foods very often, it's the hidden sugar that always catches me out.
Like the stuff in backed beans, soups, bread, custard (I remember never having extra sugar) pressed juices, and lots of other food.

Grr.... Angry

Yddraigoldragon · 03/09/2015 22:13

Enjoyed the program, but think he lost the plot. How did all that sugar in a seemingly healthy set of meals for a day turn into a bash at coca cola? What about picking on the low fat yoghurt, the cereal, etc? I think most people know that fizzy drinks are obvious liquid sugar, but sugar in food is hidden and as dangerous.

lucjam2015 · 03/09/2015 22:13

I think the only cereals without added sugar are shredded wheat (normal size) and plain oats.

ChilliAndMint · 03/09/2015 22:13

Jamie Oliver was a sous chef and spotted as a good candidate to host yet another cookery show on Channel 4.

I fail to understand why such people have such a sycophantic following, he is merely a puppet for TV and the food industry to promote whatever lucrative plans they have up their sleeves.

Jamies take on Italia is quite farcical..there are so many different cuisines that make up Italian food, in fact up until recently Italy was made up of many provinces, each with a very unique culture..

Rant over.

fakenamefornow · 03/09/2015 22:17

I like the idea of listing the number of spoons full of sugar on the front of food/drinks packaging.

My children do drink some sugary drinks but I don't think too much, they have one small fruit juice, about 120ml, with breakfast, and sometimes milk before bed. They have a fizzy drink about once a month and a carton of juice about once a week. Actually looking at it written down it looks quite a lot. The problem I have is that the rest of the time I offer water but they just don't drink it so they end up not drinking anything. How can I get them to drink more?

BIWI · 03/09/2015 22:18

And what is that to do with his programme on sugar?! Hmm

lucjam - Shredded Wheat may not have have added sugar, but it's more than 2/3rds carbs - so it's pretty much all sugar anyway!

BIWI · 03/09/2015 22:19

Sorry - my post was to ChilliandMint!

lucjam2015 · 03/09/2015 22:24

BIWI yes I realise that was just trying to think of a cereal without any added sugar. You can't get away from it, it's bloody everwhere isn't it!

BIWI · 03/09/2015 22:26

I know. I sometimes wonder why we're not ALL obsese!

Thelushinthepub · 03/09/2015 22:26

I thought it was quite good. The way coca cola/ PepsiCo have behaved in South America is shocking and it's about time more people were aware of it.
I watched it with the in laws including sil/ bil who have 3 children
Under 10. The listed alternatives to fizzy drinks at Jamie's;
J2O
Soda and lime
Squash
Orange juice

I was shocked that they didn't realise those were pretty much as bad.

I hope Jamie gets somewhere with this. He did brilliant with school
Dinners, fucked up badly with that awful show about poor people's eating habits so I hope he finds his mark here

Notoedike · 03/09/2015 22:30

Everything in moderation - but we have lost sight of what sugar moderation is. I think it's much too eay to smugly think your dcs are eating a healthy diet if they have few pieces of carrot, cucumber and tomato but it's the rest of the processed shit they eat that you need to be worried about.

HelenaDove · 03/09/2015 22:31

I do slimming world I lost ten stone originally then regained 4 then i lost the 4 stone regain.

The second time ive been doing it differently NO mullerlight yoghurts OR slimming world hifi bars. Ive not strictly took notice of their low syn thing because the products are packed with sugar I adapted the plan so that my sugar intake would be as low as possible. I will sometimes eat a full fat Greek yoghurt but measure it and eat less of it. Its taken me 2 years to lose the 4 stone regain which is hard when you are sitting in a class listening to other ppls huge losses. So ive had to be quite mentally strong and kept telling myself slow and steady wins the race. But its better this way because it stays off and doesnt go back on as easily. e.g a lot of the fast losers put on a stone last Xmas. I put on 3 pounds the whole of last December.

So Jamie if you are reading this.....its not just the supermarkets who push sugery products and encourage you to eat them. Slimming clubs do it too.

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 03/09/2015 22:34

I know that sugar - hidden and not hidden - is really bad for you but I think sugary drinks are much worse.

I was reading once that if you ate 6 oranges, it would take you ages to eat them. You would be eating fibre too and the sugar would be hitting your system in small amounts.
If you have 6 oranges in a drink, your body gets a huge hit of sugar in a few seconds which it can struggle with.

Encyclo · 03/09/2015 22:36

Helena, that is so interesting. I've lost a stone on SW and completely stalled, I AM still eating muller light yogs, I bet that's not helping me.

Thelushinthepub · 03/09/2015 22:36

The problem with everything in moderation is food has changed so much. Partly all food has changed- as per the programme foods you would not traditionally expect to have sugar (custard, yogurt) now have large amounts added and foods which aren't sweet tasting are also full (branflakes, tinned soup) the food industry is overloading us and people just aren't able to keep up. I consider myself knowledgeable but didn't know flavoured water had such obscene levels of added sugar.

Look at San pellegrino mentioned above- marketed so that unless you look closely, it appears to be sparkling water with a fruit juice. It is in fact, just a fizzy drink, like fanta.

We're not on an even playing field anymore and that's why personal
Responsibility/ willpower isn't as effective as it maybe been 25 years ago.

HelenaDove · 03/09/2015 22:37

Oh and i gave up diet coke which SW keep encouraging us to drink because its "free"

lucjam2015 · 03/09/2015 22:38

helena way to go well done you, WW is just as bad at peddling the sugary low fat bars. crisps etc etc.

Thelushinthepub · 03/09/2015 22:38

Despite early reservations here the Jamie programme is (quite rightly) not about natural sugar Ie fruit and honey

HelenaDove · 03/09/2015 22:41

Encyclo Try full fat Greek yoghurt just used as a topping on a small amount of blueberries for desert.

Sainsburys full fat Greek yoghurt.........5g sugar per 100g

the low fat version......13g of sugar per 100g. or it may be 12g i cant remember.

HelenaDove · 03/09/2015 22:45

Thankyou lucjam Smile i did go to a WW class once. Its horrifying the way they are peddling their so called diet sugary crap. It should NOT be allowed.

Hobbes8 · 03/09/2015 22:46

I agree that he lost the plot a bit midway through. We all know that coke is full of sugar and terrible for teeth and weight. Why the hell is there so much sugar in bran flakes and stir fry sauce?

Notoedike · 03/09/2015 22:46

The flavoured water thing is cheeky imo, it fooled the dcs but not me. We just spent a while in America, on return dcs noticed the smaller drinks containers - dcs were given a pint of coke as standard.
It's bloody hard though pushing the low sugar agenda, people will accuse you of creating a repressed sugar habit at every opportunity on Mumsnet. Before school my dcs ate very little sugar and I was genuinely surprised by how many occasions sugar is promoted at primary, i had to suck it up but I felt it was totally unnecessary to eat so much sugar at school or as a result of attending school (children giving sweets on their birthday) it's a culture that could be turned around easily if there was just the will.

Thelushinthepub · 03/09/2015 22:49

Also the line- if they can't have it regularly they'll go mad when they go to a party/ have sugar unsupervised/ grow up. I hear that one all the time Grin

SonnyNoChance · 03/09/2015 22:56

This programme is a load of old bollocks show.
I'm disappointed in JO

He should be ashamed
