Hooray! Let's hope that this series is better than the last.
Oh look it's Arya Stark! And more Missy!
And PC's hair is madder than ever!
(And I've found the box of exclamation marks!!!!!)
Let's see Tardis

Or perhaps the Morpheus machines are actually alien technology, appearing to grant people 8 hours' worth of sleep in what appears to be five minutes, but what appears to be five minutes in the pod is actually being teleported to a lifetime of toils in an alien mining colony, after which the pod generates a new human with all your past memories - these clones need to spend at least 23h 55m absorbing some kind of special rays only Sol puts out, then they're ready to work in the colonies for the rest of their lives - they get in the pod they came out of and they're transported away to the mining colony and a new clone is made to start the cycle again.

WTF was tonight all about Confused

Totally agree bertie no plot that made sense, no meaningful characters, flipping ridiculous monster - and if that's not the actual monster/story, why bother wasting s whole episode on that shit if the real story is revealed next week? and all these dark sets, and incomprehensible dialogue. Had to constantly rewind to hear what was being said. And no title credits!!

Am so gutted, have been a DW fan for years and years, but hating it now Sad Stephen Moffat is ruining it.

RealHuman · 14/11/2015 23:12

Or maybe Morpheus machines are available on street corners like tanning salons, and at first, you can happily nip inro a Morpheus salon once in a while, when you have an urgent deadline or need ti study all night for an exam, at first you can happily swap between the Morpheus machine and ordinary sleep, but soon you find it's more and more trouble to get to sleep in the ordinary way, and the Morpheus machine becomes something you need to use more often, until you're using it at least once every day, and you find it gets less effective, too - soon you need ten minutes, then half an hour, and it's getting quite expensive by this point, until you're spending all your spare money on eight hours a day in the Morpheus machines. The Doctor cones into a human society where sleep is commodities and the major corporations of the world are in the business of manufacturing or renting out Morpheus machines, or selling them to the super-rich who can afford them.

*commodified

Just a few scenarios off the top of my head (highly derivative, but it is Doctor Who, after all)

bialystockandbloom · 14/11/2015 23:20

realhuman not that you've given this any thought whatsoever though, eh Grin

Actually i love your storylines. Apply for a job on DW.

And you have inspired me to dig out the Time Machine dvd!

RealHuman · 14/11/2015 23:26

What can I say? Grin I've read a lot of trashy sci-fi!

BertieBotts · 15/11/2015 00:49

Do you think next week is a continuation? I wasn't sure. I thought it was because the ending was so unfinished, but then it said "Next time..." rather than "To be continued" and the previews seemed to show a totally different setting, with different characters, so I don't know!

I gave up on that episode. It was rubbish. I admire their dedication to recreating old Who - it always had some shit storylines too Grin

My suspension of disbelief failed at the scary monster made from sleepy-eyed crusts.

I just don't get who these episodes are for? The sci-fi is crap but lighting/direction/production makes it literally too dark and scary for DCs.

Happy yy I think the arc is about hybrids; people the Doctor leaves behind; why he left Gallifrey. But I don't think the structure of the episodes helps the arc eg if you look at Buffy, each series had it's Big Bad arc and there were obvious links and references back. The characters acknowledged the arc and tried to solve the 'mystery'. Most series of Doctor Who have had that acknowledgement. This series doesn't have that and I think it misses it.

However on a related note, DS is currently playing Doctor Who Lego Dimensions and it is fab - all the Doctors; the music and the different interiors for the Tardis. It's making me so nostalgic about Who

SconeForAStroll · 15/11/2015 11:12

Well I am glad it wasn't just us who didn't get it. We looked at each other at the end of the episode in utter bewilderment - it didn't make any sense at all. I am Sad

I wasn't impressed with last nights episode either. I think it's a real shame they just don't seem to be using PC to his full potential and this series just isn't fun like previous ones. Also, is it just me who feels like this whole series is very dark, like they've become a bit heavy handed with a dark grey camera filter?

Snapespeare · 15/11/2015 11:40

It wasn't the worst episode. I liked that it will make younger children scared of going to sleep. I think it was important from the PoV of Clara having the tardis key, Clara being bossy, naming things etcher, because it makes melikehere even less.

Re Xmas: anyone seen a synophosis that is a bit more than, 'no Clara, hello sweetie!?'

Did they make a big deal of Clara having the Tardis key this episode? I stopped really paying attention towards the end. New Who was my favourite TV show since it started but I'm getting quite meh about it. I hate Peter Capaldi as The Doctor and I really hate the sonic sunglasses. I liked Clara with Matt Smith but I don't think she has any chemistry with Capaldi at all. Danny Pink helped a bit with that last series but he was a bit of a drip. Missy helps when she turns up, maybe it will be the same with River Song.

I think Moffat has run out of good ideas or is using up all of his creativity on Sherlock. Doctor Who deserves someone who can give it their full attention.

Agree Moffat has lost it. I haven't particularly enjoyed this series, or the last. There was a moment when capaldi was straight-to-camera-img last night and I got a bit of a fanny-twinge and thought 'oh yes! now you're my doctor' Blush but it's been a looooong time waiting for that moment.

My Xmas river song theory is that fragment-Clara went back to the library and replaced River, so river is very much alive and waiting to cause some havoc. Capaldi and Kingston will be fab together.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 15/11/2015 13:34

Capaldi and Kingston will be fab together
^^ so true Grin

SuffolkNWhat · 15/11/2015 13:41

Ashildr is in the next episode apparently

APlaceOnTheCouch · 15/11/2015 13:55

Yep I read that too and an alien Diagon Alley. For the first time ever, I've been reading the episode summaries in advance to see if it's worth wasting my time watching them. despite this cynical exterior I will probably still cry if Clara dies

MrsToddsShortcut · 15/11/2015 14:07

I only caught fragments of last nights episode as I was running around, but DS (7) was watching it and declared it boring and not scary. Until the end when Reece Shearsmith pulled his eye off and disintegrated. At which point, DS declared that he couldn't sleep without the light on, and asked repeatedly if RS was actually real. He only went to sleep after I explained that RS was an actor and showed him a short clip of Tubbs and Edward from The League of Gentlemen. He thought that was very funny and was reassured. I suppose if kids are still being scared they're doing something right, but my interest is waning. Make Mark Gatiss show runner!

ChoccyJules · 15/11/2015 14:12

Found last night's episode boring, bitty and filmed far too much in the dark. If I wasn't a die-hard fan I would have turned over after about five minutes. The stories are getting worse and worse, gaping plot holes and rubbish endings.
And now you've mentioned River Song is on at Christmas, I haven't even got that to look forward to (dislike that character so so much)!
Perfect DW for Choccy: Ecclestone, Donna and K-9. Job done Grin

SouthWestmom · 15/11/2015 17:08

Just watched on Catch up - ds has declared that peter capaldi has ruined dr who. I think I'm alone in having been lost for a loooonnng time - the soldier, crack in the wall, river song stuff totally lost me - I just want to watch, be scared, turn it off til next week.

Gruach · 15/11/2015 18:19

I liked it. Grin

But I'm not a horror/horror-sci-fi buff so what sounded to me like bright and inventive language may just have been a turgid rip-off.

Someone from the DW team was quoted in the Guardian reviewer as saying (effectively) that all the clues to Clara's end have been hidden in full view throughout the series. Yeah. I'll eat my TV (have no TV, will eat laptop not phone) if it doesn't work out exactly as I've been anticipating.

Yes, more hybrids and erm ... death masquerading as sleep. And Clara climbing into a metal carapace where wires are attached to her brain and she loses consciousness of her self. Dalek...

They could do all of those RealHuman. Grin
