I dont think it was rude

...they're probbers saving all the wank jokes for next week Grin

mrsschatzepage · 19/03/2015 19:19

Watched the pilot, didn't think it was funny and their disgusting table manners made my stomach turn so switched off.

Davros · 19/03/2015 20:22

I think I'll give it a go with DD but can point out to her how disgusting their table manners are and she should do betterGrin
I will only watch on catch up so I'm trusting you all to warn me of wank jokes in future episodes!

QueQuesto · 20/03/2015 10:12

If the older daughters were all named for feminists, why is the younger one called Mariah?

SunnyBaudelaire · 20/03/2015 10:37

I dont think they were, they were called after singers. eg Aretha, Yoko., so therefore Mariah would 'go'.
Anyway I thought it was drivellous rubbish and so did both my 16 year olds.

GirlAnachronism · 20/03/2015 16:28

I really enjoyed it, had no idea cm had anything to do with it, and giggled quite a bit through it. unpopular opinion here it seems though, oh well, hope it stays

Lottapianos · 20/03/2015 17:18

Well I just watched it and bugger me it was bad. Clunky unfunny writing and very dodgy accents. A couple of very mildly amusing moments but that's it. Some v good acting though, specifically mum and Germaine and my God, the mum is one hot woman

windypolar · 20/03/2015 17:26

I didn't think they made enough of the home ed but it's early days yet. I like that it was positive as regards said topic.

It should have been set in the 80s though I think. I can imagine it was more troublesome to be unschoolers back then. I don't like the modern setting, and dare I say I found the main character slightly irritating and abrasive.
I'm going to keep watching, see where they go with it

ChildOfGallifrey · 22/03/2015 12:17

I just watched it on catch up after a home ed group I follow mentioned it and really liked it. I know have a crush on Della...I need to buy myself some overalls sharpish!

Davros · 22/03/2015 22:18

Oh dear, dreadful imo. Germaine and Yoko have got huge knockers, (not relevant to quality of programme, just sayin')

AppleYumYum · 24/03/2015 00:36

Anyone watch this week? I really enjoyed last night's episode and found myself laughing much more than last week.

AGnu · 24/03/2015 01:15

I've watched the pilot & first episode - I think it's the sort of programme that has the potential to be funny once it's bedded in a bit. It just didn't feel like it gelled well initially.

Having said that, I watched it & said to DH "Now I get why there's so much dislike for Caitlin Moran on Mumsnet." I hated her character. I related to the one based on Caroline though. Tbh, I'd happily watch it just to hear them refer to the little ones as "the babbies" - makes me smile every time!

DioneTheDiabolist · 24/03/2015 01:25

Im really enjoying it.

My cousins were brought up in a similar household (in a time before tech at yer fingertips) me, less so cos my dad was more present, but I will remember with fondness the unbridled feminism in my DAunt's and DCousin's household.

DAunt is dead now, but she raised competent, intelligent, amazing daughters who, given her early death, turned out to be clever, inspired, strong, ambitious women.

I really like Raised by Wolves.

Davros · 24/03/2015 15:57

My Dad was from Wolverhampton and we always say "babby"

hackmum · 26/03/2015 09:07

I've watched the first episode (though not the pilot). Quite enjoyed it. There were some laugh-out-loud moments, which is always encouraging. I thought there were two things wrong with it, though. One is that the comedy came at the expense of an actual storyline or character development. Nothing much happened in that first episode - just a series of set pieces.

The other is that, as my DP put it, it has a "seventies vibe" about it. Although it's set in the present, it doesn't feel as if it is. Can't quite put my finger on it but they don't really seem like a contemporary family.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 26/03/2015 09:15

I really really enjoyed it. And I love Caitlin Moran and all her writing.

menthol · 26/03/2015 09:56

That's what I thought, hackmum. The contemporary setting doesn't ring true.

I think the second episode was better. But I still think they've made a big mistake with the period time setting used, also, for want of a better word, the USP of the home schooling family has not yet been touched upon. So, at the moment to me it just looks like a poorer, inferior version of Mad Fat Diary

Sammy3 · 26/03/2015 18:01

We've watched both episodes so far but didn't find it funny. I hadn't even realised the kids were home schooled, until reading this thread, so I mustn't have been paying enough attention. They just seemed to be wearing strange clothes & acting odd. I agree that it seemed to be set in the early eighties and it wasn't until the latest episode where I was sure it was meant to be contemporary. The accents are pretty horrendous, other than grampy who does a decent job of it. I'd have thought the writer would have insisted on that part being right (surely there are kids in the Black Country area who can act & who would have given the programme some credibility on that front).

gincamelbak · 27/03/2015 09:26

Sorry if already said, but while I like the programme, I think it very much smacks of the two sisters writing Really Good Lines and high giving each other on their insight or wit, rather than them writing realistic dialogue.

I do love the mum though. She was great in Pulling as well.

LooseAtTheSeams · 27/03/2015 13:34

I really love the mum, too, and I thought this week's episode was much better. However, I really agree with Menthol, the contemporary setting is a problem and they haven't explained the home schooling (although that was in the pilot, I think).

Rollermum · 27/03/2015 13:53

I really like CM, surprised to see so much dislike here! I don't get a smug vibe at all and she's made some of my friends who who never have 'got' feminism into feminists.

I liked RBW and laughed a fair bit, though it has that settling in feel of a new series. Also DH agreed it felt 70/80s.

Palehorse · 27/03/2015 15:01

i dunno, i thought the accents were ok, they doh spake proper in wolvo anyway, they ay proper blackcountry Wink

squoosh · 27/03/2015 20:13

Yes. That's my problem with it too. There are some good lines but none of it felt like proper dialogue, just stuff they shoehorned in. It's all too verbose, and felt a bit tiring to keep up with. Is the Germaine character meant to be Caitlin Moran?

I thought it would have been better set in the late 80's/early 90's too.

GettingFiggyWithIt · 28/03/2015 01:06

Well I liked the pilot and the first two episodes. Adored Pulling and think Rebekah Staton is fantastic so hope it is successful. Having taught teens in a girl's school back in the day, it really isn't that far off. Maybe as I have just seen all three back to back I feel like I know them already iyswim. But I also like Kimmy Schmidt and Catastrophe.

cogitosum · 28/03/2015 01:32

I liked it and love cm Blush
