Are we watching it ?
I'm not a fan of Caitlin Moran I find her quite annoying
I'm not sure if I like this comedy or not. I've not laughed yet

I was going to post on this. I read 'How To Be A Woman' (which my SIL and her SIL raved about and was distinctly unimpressed.

This last night though, I didn't laugh out loud (well maybe a few times) but it was amusing and a funny half hour slot for a Monday evening. Quite well written. The mother (Della?) looked amazing, I think she's my new heroine!

thenewbrunette · 17/03/2015 13:32

I laughed a few times and I think the 2 young actresses playing the oldest sisters were good...but on the whole I'm afraid I never find Caitlin Moran quite as funny or interesting as I think I should.

I also thought How to be a Woman was ok, no more than that.

SuperFlyHigh · 17/03/2015 13:49

thenew I thought How to be a Woman was complete and utter crap and my SIL (double first at Oxford stealth boast!) and her SIL were really raving about it. My SIL likes sometimes to have read the latest book etc and I just recall cringing and what a load of crap it was. sorry Caitlin

IPeeInTheShowerOhYes · 17/03/2015 13:57

I enjoyed many bits of How To Be A Woman and often find Caitlin's Sunday Times column entertaining and thought provoking.
However Raised by Wolves didn't raise a smile let alone a laugh and I turned it off after 15 mins or so.

Lottapianos · 17/03/2015 14:02

'but on the whole I'm afraid I never find Caitlin Moran quite as funny or interesting as I think I should'

You mean, not quite as funny or interesting as she finds herself! Wink

I find her terribly tedious most of the time, so smug and self-satisfied that she's pretty exhausting to watch or read. She does have flashes of brilliance (the chapter in How to Be a Woman about her abortion is one of the bravest things I've ever read) but I think overall she's massively over rated, not least of all by herself.

Have recorded RBW and will watch it tonight, am expecting it to be fairly rubbish

Costacoffeeplease · 17/03/2015 14:09

If it's anything like the pilot last year, it will be dire

CM is really quite irritating, she seems to think she's the first person to have been raised in a council house, deprived childhood etc etc and that we should all be overwhelmed at her brilliance, she's just ok

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 17/03/2015 14:11

I watched the first half. I thought the Mum was fabulous but was less impressed with the Caitlin character. I just felt it was all the same stuff you see Caitlin writing about all the time. The mother though, was great.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 17/03/2015 14:18

I dunno

I really wanted to like it. I LOVE Rebekah ??Staton who plays the mum- I don't know why she doesn't get more work. She is fucking super

but it was a bit too short-the teen wisecracking/epigram delivery was a bit relentless and a bit dull and some of the accents were a bit dodge

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 17/03/2015 14:28

She is brilliant isn't she? I liked "We're midlands twats". That took a certain delivery.

SunnyBaudelaire · 17/03/2015 14:30

It did not even raise a smile in our house I am afraid.
Dull dull dull.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 17/03/2015 14:34

think C4 have spoiled us with great telly recently

eg Cucumber, Catastrophe

now a lot of stuff suffers by comparison imo

Lottapianos · 17/03/2015 14:45

Oh Cucumber was really fabulous, wasn't it? I wasnt sure about it at various points in the series but thought it came together beautifully in the end. The final scene was wonderful

SunnyBaudelaire · 17/03/2015 14:51

yes there is some really good TV drama about at the moment, we do not need to watch dull shyte like Raised by wotsits.

SuperFlyHigh · 17/03/2015 15:33

Lotta - I loved loved loved Cucumber too! Hilarious and brilliantly acted.

Muddha I loved the mum, 'Della' too.

Caitlin Moran does come across as smug and self satisfied, she shouldn't do but she does, but the under 20s/30s lap her stuff up...

I don't even care if she's been brought up on a council estate or not get rid of the smugness and I may like you more Caitlin.

SunnyBaudelaire · 17/03/2015 15:36

she is ghastly even her pic makes me feel nauseous, you know the one from her book.

Izzy24 · 17/03/2015 16:00

It was just exhausting to watch because it was so wordy. I think I would have enjoyed it as a book.

Is it a book?

Lottapianos · 17/03/2015 16:05

I thought Vincent Franklin was so brilliant in it. And I just loved the final scene, when he said he was desperate for a break from being him, and if he could just spend 6 months walking up and down on a beach, then everything would be ok. I have felt like that so many times and I'm a straight woman Smile Lovely stuff

And you know, for all the apparent smugness, I get overwhelming vibes of self loathing from her every time I see her interviewed. She reminds me of a 17 year old who is desperate to grow up and desperate for attention and desperate to be admired and well, just desperate really. And I find her constant references to being drunk and wankered and arseholed and blah blah blah extremely dated and try-hard.

noddyholder · 17/03/2015 16:07

So her ie not as funny/good/smart as it thinks it i

thenewbrunette · 17/03/2015 17:28

it was just exhausting to watch as it was so wordy

Yes - a few times I just thought NOBODY actually talks like this in real life, it all sounded a bit forced.

I loved Cucumber too and there is a whole other long thread on here about it. But was not keen in Catastrophe. I think Sharon Horgan is another one who thinks she's funnier than she is.

Cheeseandhamtoast · 17/03/2015 18:36

Well I love Caitlin Moran's writing - she is the only reason why I buy The Times.

I quite enjoyed Raised by Wolves. I didn't think it was too wordy because I think that's what Caitlin is trying to portray - a more intelligent working class family, and that is why there is a whole wall of books in their house.

noddyholder · 17/03/2015 20:17

A more intelligent working class family with books? ??

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 17/03/2015 21:24

lolz

ere I wonder what they think of CM in Wolvo now er's living in Crouch End and talking posh

stareatthetvscreen · 17/03/2015 21:29

i loved it

can't stick her though

jazzsyncopation · 17/03/2015 22:36

I also find her a pain in the arse...it's great to now discover am not alone she's a real 'darling ' of r4:agree with all that's been said(save prog which didn't /wont watch)

Davros · 19/03/2015 19:06

Thinking of watching it with DD who is a very grown up 12 year old, well used to lots of swearing and milk sex refs. What do you all think, unsuitable?
