Is anyone going to watch this? I'm really torn because the presenter is Giles Coren who I don't like much but the idea is interesting. They are basically getting a family to eat from a different decade each week from 1950s to now

No, melanie it ended in 2000 I think. It would be interesting, tho, to do another, but think I'd skew the statistics, me being a pop tart Virgin an all Wink

Davros · 17/04/2015 09:12

Bottled water (which I hate!)

Trills · 18/04/2015 12:03

Oh, how wonderful.

Rochelle is not very good at cooking and Brandon is not very good at flat-pack furniture.

Well at least that's "fair".

Jacana · 18/04/2015 12:41

I'm not yet convinced Brandon is quite as good at cooking as he thinks says he isHmm

I missed the flat pack epi, is that the same one where the girls play at going it alone in a flat for a night?

Jacana · 18/04/2015 12:47

Oh yes, the bottled waterShock

Way back, it was Johnny Forriner's water supply which was supposed to be so dodgy you needed to drink bottled stuff....when did ours obtain the same status? Totally inexplicable. Good money maker for all the bottled water companies tho.

ppeatfruit · 18/04/2015 15:13

We use water filters, the bottled stuff is too salty for us. The difference in taste from tap water is extraordinary. Goldfish must have filtered tap water otherwise they get ill that says it all to me!

Trills · 18/04/2015 17:22

In the 90s Brandon was putting together a bunch of ikea stuff to do up their kitchen.

Nessalina · 19/04/2015 07:16

Still need to catchup on the 90s, but living the show so far!
I've realised that I remember surprisingly little about the food I ate when I was very young (born '82)...
Definitely ate plenty of eggs, scrambled on toast and eggybread (with salt not sugar!), and my mum was a pretty good cook I think... I do remember her doing liver & onions and it being vile - I now know that she was seriously over cooking it!

derxa · 19/04/2015 07:57

DH watched 90s one and I had to sit through it again. I found watching the BSE crisis very upsetting. The implication was that all the farmers were evil apart from the wonderful organic farmer blahblahblah. In RL things are not that simple. Rochelle said she'd never seen such a wonderful lettuce in her life. What planet is she on!? This programme highlighted the disconnect between food producers and consumers.

ppeatfruit · 19/04/2015 08:16

The consumers who live urban lives derxa I mentioned the Farmers' markets upthread that the programme didn't talk about, I can't remember if they started coming to towns in the 90s or not. I know that there is a great difference between most supermarket produce and the freshness of just picked produce esp. if it's grown seasonally and sustainably, it doesn't have to be organic.

IMO industrial animal husbandry is not good for anyone part from people who only look at the bottom line.

derxa · 19/04/2015 08:46

I agree that industrial style farming is repugnant to a lot of people e.g. feed lots and a lot of chicken production methods. Unfortunately the smaller dairy farmers are going out of business and the only ones that can survive are those with herds of 200 upwards. The average cow now produces much more per lactation than years ago. The poor things have a much shorter life. However all of this is a response to market forces. Most farmers care deeply about the welfare of their animals but things are desperate at the moment.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/04/2015 19:20

best one yet, think coz i rem it all, the 90's were a good decade :)

ppeatfruit · 21/04/2015 08:33

derza There is an inherent unfairness in 'market forces'. We pay for the best because we want to eat the best. It's a shame that a lot of people who can afford to buy better quality food don't bother. It affects everyone and there should be 'fair trade' locally too!!

Davros · 22/04/2015 15:26

I think local Fair Trade is a brilliant idea

ppeatfruit · 22/04/2015 16:01

I think there is, or was, a groundswell against the exploitation of local producers by supermarkets Davros H.F.W. and a few others were involved, though with everyone going to Aldi and Lidl now it probably has been forgotten Sad

Did anyone see last nights' ? I've recorded it so will watch in a minute.

Davros · 22/04/2015 16:07

I am sick of seeing supermarket ads that just go on about prices and savings. I shop in a big supermarket but mostly not for food. Last night's was good although predicting future Dodd trends and needs is interesting but probably a waste of time. Most predictions, based on the past, are rubbish as things change

Jacana · 22/04/2015 17:22

just finished watching it. Loved Rochelle's summation at the end " I enjoyed every day!"

Pipbin · 22/04/2015 20:01

I was annoyed with them saying that insects were not meat. I think they are as they are a living creature.
I don't think we will see widespread consummation of insects. Am I right in thinking that insects aren't kosher?

Trills · 22/04/2015 21:46

I think you might mean consumption there not consummation. :o

A vegetarian would say insects are meat, definitely.

RudeBarbandCustard · 22/04/2015 22:00

I loved this series, and loved the family! Great concept, really interesting. I thought the kids were great sports getting all dressed up!

Pipbin · 22/04/2015 22:08

Auto correct fail there.

Yes I am vegi and they are meat.

Trills · 22/04/2015 22:12

But have they said that insects are "not meat", or have they said that insects will solve our "meat problems"? Through being cheaper to grow, not so bad for the environment, etc?

Pipbin · 22/04/2015 22:14

Giles Coren actually said that they were 'not meat'.

Trills · 22/04/2015 22:20

I missed that. That's silly.
