Is anyone going to watch this? I'm really torn because the presenter is Giles Coren who I don't like much but the idea is interesting. They are basically getting a family to eat from a different decade each week from 1950s to now

Looking forward to 1980s

chocolatelife · 07/04/2015 20:01

thanks for reminder! Grin

CoffeeAndTheThames · 07/04/2015 20:08

I actually quite like that kitchen Blush

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/04/2015 20:12

Microwave chicken with marmite. Yuk

SwedishEdith · 07/04/2015 20:14

I remember having a microwaved chicken - had a curry paste on it to give it colour. It was lovely, really moist.

Iwantacampervan · 07/04/2015 20:25

Vienetta- old fashioned, oh dear.

CoffeeAndTheThames · 07/04/2015 20:27

Love the girls possibly being told off for taking the 'dinner party food ' Vienetta!

TendonQueen · 07/04/2015 20:34

Did anyone actually have a filter coffee machine in the early 80s? Certainly didn't happen round my way.

SwedishEdith · 07/04/2015 20:37

Can't remember the exact year, but I had one in my flat in 1987 so, I guess, my parents would have had one before then.

mrsschatzepage · 07/04/2015 21:11

My favourite decade! The grey and red colour scheme was so eighties! My DB had a red and grey bedroom. Everything looked much brighter. There was a lot of pastel shades around then which was reflected in their living room decor. I remember Vienetta. I think we would find it a bit boring now we have Ben and Jerrys and their multitude of flavours. It was the only food I could relate to as we didnt have a microwave, a soda stream or pizza deliveries. Deprived

I find the issue of her not being able to cook very irritating. There must have been many people applying who were able cooks, and would give a more realistic show of how to cook foods in the different eras.
Choosing someone who can't cook (and is clearly clueless) doesn't to me add to the entertainment of the programme, much prefer if someone like Ruth Goodman did it very well.
It must have been a deliberate decision to do it that way. Sad
Some of the decisions she makes are just stupid-like cooking all the liver rather than saving some, which if she was more experienced then she wouldn't do, and we would have a better show of what it should be like.

I also think (and this irritated me on the coal house lot too) that the girls would have been helping much more. They would have been expected to in that era, and they could have had a good time doing it, I'm sure.

And it isn't just her resting-miserable face. She seems to complain all the time too. Someoen who says "It is an awful lot of work, much harder than today, but it was really fun when...." would lift the tone of the whole programme.

I do spend an awful lot of time (only seen 50s/60s so far)saying "Granny/Gran/Mum/I had that"

My parents have a coffer "percolator" (not sure of the spelling) which they got for a wedding present in the early 70s. Mostly noticable for the wonderfully rude noises as it churned the coffee up to the top and back agan. Grin

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/04/2015 21:42

We had a filter coffee maker , a soda stream and microwave . Pizza deliveries I don't think existed in NE England !

RedButtonhole · 07/04/2015 21:49

My mum still microwaves the chicken sometimes, though she misses out the gross marmite topping.

We also love vienetta Grin

Southeastdweller · 07/04/2015 22:04

I didn't like the sarky comment tonight from Giles to Rochelle - 'I think he (Anton Mossiman) could afford more pans'.

Akire · 07/04/2015 22:17

I don't know how she took 2.5h for chicken dinner. If chicken took 30m potatoes say 20m then veg 20m that's an extra hour and half of faffing around! Surely didn't take that long to chop up veg!

Hating every time there's cornbeef it's poor food. Ok so not many people know buy in a tin ( I love it) but they sell plenty at my local waitrose deli it's the same thing just cut and wrapped in plastic!

eddiemairswife · 07/04/2015 22:31

I have got some Viennetta in my freezer. And the corned beef casserole and dumplings (cooked by the wives of striking miners) looked delicious.

Jacana · 08/04/2015 07:37

I bought my Sanyo micro in the 80s when I left home - it was brilliant! Bought a chicken on the way home, 20mns later perfect roast chicken cooked in one of those bag things, an Idaho potato baked in the micro while the chicken rested, salad assembled and dressed, 30mns total tops.where she got 2.5 hrs from, god only knows. Of course it took some intelligence to work out you could cook veg. On the hob while the micro did its stuff with the chicken....big tip, the use of one gadget doesn't preclude the simultaneous use of anotherHmm it came with a cookery book and I also was given a demo on its use. The woman gave me the tip she said you'd never find in a cookery book....you could put your white knickers in a placcy bowl with water and washing powder and boil wash them in a couple of minutesGrinGrin

I've still got and use my Swan brand pop pop coffee percolator, mentioned upthread, they now sell for loads on the vintage sites.love the shape, love the coffee.

Christ! She even messed up the dinner for her boss, the one cooked from a recipe book. Shock , contender for Masterchef she ain't.

chocolatelife · 08/04/2015 08:02

interesting how family life is changing, sitting in front of TV with delivered pizzas, snacking, no time round the table.
If I had to cook a microwave meal for everyone I would do it in stages so we all sat down together

chocolatelife · 08/04/2015 08:04

The lad and the girls seem to be more clued up than either of their parents.i really like them. Wonder which gene pool they came fromConfused

Titsalinabumsquash · 08/04/2015 09:24

Both in the 60's episode and last nights 80's me and DP agreed that we loved the kitchens and wouldn't mind having one for ourselves, the 70's was far too busy for my taste but I do like having it all open with the dining table. Does anyone know which decade they're going up to?
