OP posts:

Ex borstal boyfriend I thought could have knocked on the door of the house for help that he stole the car from.

mammuzzamia I thought that too.

DH is over 50 and he's still bitter about being made to wear short trousers when all the other boys were in long.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 24/02/2015 13:22

Crikey, shelagh!

Sorry, didn't mean to offend you. I know it's my opinion.

But, I think it's actually pretty dodgy to send out an unhealthy image of mental illness - what I mean by 'unhealthy' is 'totally unrealistic and liable to make it harder for people with real mental illness', btw. I mean that people will see him going 'ah, I was ill, now, magically, I am better at just the right time' and think 'oh, everyone who's ill should be able to make an effort and push it off'.

But it may be I am overthinking it all really!

I don't think you can really prove his wife being the writer doesn't have an effect. I didn't think he saw scripts either - I'm not suggesting some form of nepotism (if that's the right word) - just that I think she imagines everyone sees him the way she does. It's sweet, but it feels a bit embarrassing somehow.

Behindthepaintedgarden · 24/02/2015 13:34

I love Chummy in this and think she really adds something to the programme.
But I agree she and Trixie will probably leave at the end of this series. Also possibly Cynthia. Helen George and Bryony Hannah are young and very talented actresses who are unlikely to want to become typecast or miss out on other opportunities.

mammuzzamia · 24/02/2015 13:54

You might have a point about the mental illness not being very accurately depicted. But I must say that I would never have looked twice at Dr Turner until he rushed into the surgery all dishevelled the other week and then I could still see what people meant that he has a certain something. Though he's still not my cup of tea (sorry Sheila Grin)

Not keen on Chummy. Bit of a caricature. Though would be sad to see Trixie go

diddl · 24/02/2015 13:56

Did I imagine Dr Turner saying "Hellooo nurse Sheila/Turner(?)" in a suggestive way when he saw her in her uniform?

mammuzzamia · 24/02/2015 13:58

Ooops, Shelagh not Sheila. I was just thinking diddl had it wrong, then noticed that I did it first Blush

limitedperiodonly · 24/02/2015 13:59

Did Trixie drink the bourbon or the cream soda?

JeanneDeMontbaston · 24/02/2015 14:20

Grin Fair enough mammu.

Sorry, ShelaghBlush!

ShelaghTurner · 24/02/2015 14:36

Sorry, I'm very protective of my man (in my dreams!).

I take your point about portrayal of mental illness but I doubt that anyone watches a drama set in 1960 and takes it as current fact.

As for the McGanns, she's an extremely highly regarded and accomplished writer with a strong of successful projects and a show just opened on Broadway. I doubt very very much whether she is going to risk her reputation by allowing even the tiniest suggestion of nepotism. They haven't worked together since they first met 30 years ago and he auditioned for CTM same as everyone else. He sees the scripts when he is sent them same time as everyone else and there is no reason to suggest that she's lying.

Not sure where his looks come into it. the character isn't sold on his looks at all. In fact a couple of comments have been made regarding how much older than Shelagh he is.

ShelaghTurner · 24/02/2015 14:37

And yes he did say that. You may have heard the fandom explosions from over on tumblr Grin

ShelaghTurner · 24/02/2015 14:39

Upshot: insult me, insult my children. Don't insult Steve BlushGrinGrin

JeanneDeMontbaston · 24/02/2015 14:57

Ok, I'm backing off, I'm backing off!

It would've been nice if you'd read my post instead of attacking, but there we go.

Penguito · 24/02/2015 15:17

Anyone else think the girl with diabetes looked like a young Tracey Barlow?

limitedperiodonly · 24/02/2015 15:29

I read an interview with Helena Bonham-Carter and she was asked why she's always in Tim Burton's stuff.

She didn't get huffy. She said she used to audition but one day decided that if he wanted to continue having sex with her he could cut out the bloody auditions.

I think she was joking - a bit. She does make me laugh.

I remember a cruel Spitting Image sketch from when Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson were still married. Her puppet came home and his voice called out: 'I'm in the kitchen.'

She said: 'Can I be in it too?' Grin

ShelaghTurner · 24/02/2015 16:38

Not sure where I've been rude. I think I've actually been quite measured considering some of the things you've been implying. Regardless of who we're talking about, implying what you are is pretty nasty.

But hey. You're welcome to your opinion. And I didn't want you to 'back off', I was trying to lighten the tone because your accusations were pretty nasty.

maudpringles · 24/02/2015 16:51

Goodness, It seems to be getting a bit heated on here.
It is after all, only a television programme and it is allowed to have its fans and also others who enjoy it but may question some parts of it.
I think it is miles better than anything else on at the moment, but I still maintain the quality has dipped in the last episode or two.

Clockingoff · 24/02/2015 17:06

I don't see how Jeanne's posts have been in any way nasty. All she's said is that she personally feels that the writer may have slightly blinkered vision when it comes to Dr Turner's character as he's played by her husband.

I'm not sure if I agree of disagree with that view, but I don't see anything wrong with posting it.

girliefriend · 24/02/2015 17:08

I think we all need a group hug - lets not fall out over Call the Midwife Grin

JeanneDeMontbaston · 24/02/2015 17:15

Eh? Confused

You're not reading my posts. I said it's not nepotism, and you're lecturing me on how it isn't nepotism.

I'm afraid you come across as absurdly over-invested in a TV programme. There's really nothing at all unusual about discussing how a show is written or acted, nor about me and you and others disagreeing over which men - men we don't know from Adam! - might be seen as attractive.

Really, I don't see why this is so personal to you.

limitedperiodonly · 24/02/2015 17:28

I don't think Jeanne has done anything wrong. In some respects I agree with her.

Kaye Mellor kept casting her daughter, Gaynor Faye. As it happens, I don't think either of them are very good, but Mellor was fashionable and 'in' and Faye was part of the package.

Same as Jed Mercurio and Ashley Pharoah. I've no idea whether they cast their family but they definitely cast their friends who may or may not have been good actors.

I get very bored with seeing the same faces on TV and in TV pages all the time.

BOFster · 24/02/2015 17:30

I feel they are foregrounding the male characters generally far more this series, and I have to say that it's the poorer for it, in my opinion.

limitedperiodonly · 24/02/2015 17:32

I do think it's nepotism.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 24/02/2015 17:35

Agree with that, BOF.

I don't think the male characters are all that exciting, either.
