The poor little boySad

OP posts:
mammuzzamia · 23/02/2015 13:48

Ah of course! Orphan Black, Shameless. I remember them both now, that's jogged the old memory a bit. Thank you.

I'm surprised so many of us weren't enamoured of Jenny. I thought she was wooden and not very endearing character and have scarcely noticed her absence.

ShelaghTurner · 23/02/2015 14:38

I wasn't keen on Jenny either and I'm cartwheeling round the living room every Sunday because God-awful Chummy isn't in it. Six whole beautiful Chummy-free weeks! Bliss.

I couldn't place Mrs Gee either then I remembered she was the rotten mother in Goodnight Mr Tom :)

girliefriend · 23/02/2015 17:31

Love nurse Crane as well Smile the bit were she sat on the step and chatted to the young man about how she was illegitimate was so good and said much of her character I thought. Also when Trixie and the other girls laughed at her wanting to go to the dance made me so Sad for her and Angry with the girls.

Maybe wet isn't the right word for Cynthia, there is something slightly annoying about her though!!

Tiredemma · 23/02/2015 17:34

I was getting very frustrated last night at all the 'wistful' shots of Sister Mary Cynthia wandering around looking a bit vacant.

Clawdy · 23/02/2015 18:06

Yes, Cynthia's wistful smile is getting irritating. Anyone else remember the diabetic girl's mum was Mr. Bean's girlfriend?Smile

misdee · 23/02/2015 18:06

I am starting to like Nurse Crane.

I was surprised that women under 21 was still considered young and their parents could sign off medical procedures. Would that apply to young men as well?

DishwasherDogs · 23/02/2015 18:11

Ahahh, Goodnight Mr Tom and The Lakes, I knew I'd seen her in something!

Hygellig · 23/02/2015 18:13

I was also surprised that under-21s were considered minors. It would seem very strange to have to ask your parents' permission for a medical procedure at 20.

Felt a bit sorry for Nurse Crane as well. I hope the younger ones start including her a bit more.

iklboo · 23/02/2015 18:35

Attracta was in The Commitments as well.

3littlefrogs · 23/02/2015 18:40

I hope we hear more about Nurse Crane. I really like her character. I have worked with nurses like her. It used to be the case that you couldn't stay in nursing if you got married - there were many senior (older) nurses who were "spinsters" back in the 50s and early 60s.

I worked with a lovely community nurse who couldn't finish her SRN training because she got married. She was allowed to continue working, but as a SEN. That would be unthinkable these days.

SRN = State Registered nurse
SEN = State Enrolled nurse.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 23/02/2015 18:41

Oh yes, The Commitments! I knew I'd seen her somewhere before!

I thought Jenny came across very badly in the books too, even though she wrote them. Not a likeable character IMO.

I love Nurse Crane and agree with girliefriend - I was very cross with Trixie etc when they laughed at her for wanting to go to the dance.

lucymam · 23/02/2015 18:50

My mother was 20 when she had me in 1968. She hated hospital and didn't want to stay in for 7 days, as was usual then. My dad had to sign her out early. as at 20 years of age, she was too young to do that.

BertieBotts · 23/02/2015 18:53

Oh it was sad when Nurse Crane heard them all laughing at her :(

iklboo · 23/02/2015 19:03

Oh the older lady - Peggy! Bless.

breward · 23/02/2015 19:42

Can I ask a daft question? Was Peggy's body still in the caravan when it was burned. Is it like a funeral pyre, is it just tradition to burn the deceased person's caravan?

I was surprised the whole of the East End did not go up in flames with the buildings being so close.
DD commented how tidy the gypsy's left the site they had been staying on. Hmm

Clawdy · 23/02/2015 20:08

DH asked the same question. Peggy wasn't in it,the tradition was to burn the caravan belonging to the deceased. I think there's a similar scene in "The Diddakoi".

Violetcloud · 23/02/2015 20:33

I thought for a moment that Mr and Mrs Turner were having a lovely moment last night with the the sewing. He was telling her to ask for help, so I thought he was going to take half the load... Then it got dumped on the nuns!

Also, Nurse Crane being laughed at was awful, there was nothing funny about her wanting to go to the dance.

MarthasHarbour · 23/02/2015 20:44

YY Attracta will always be Natalie from the Commitments for me Smile

And Mrs Gee - Annabel Apsion has been in so many things over the years and i love her too! She played a bereaved mum in Hillsborough - the wife of Trevor Hicks. She is such a powerful actress Smile

I loved this weeks episode. It was close to home for me as i had Gestational Diabetes (different type of Diabetes to the girl in the prog but all the same). When they were talking about the risks to the unborn baby i was in floods of tears. I lost a baby at 21 weeks (before my GD was diagnosed with my subsequent pregnancy) and i have always been convinced that GD contributed to it (although my consultant thinks not). Anyway - it brought it all home to me and it made me grateful for all the support i had when i had GD.

I love all the new characters. I really dont miss Jenny or Chummy, and oh crikey YY to Sister Mary Cynthia looking all wistful. It almost seems like she is a little child trying everything to impress her parents (i am reflecting here - she reminds me of my sister!!)

girliefriend · 23/02/2015 20:52

Yy 'wistful shots' is exactly the problem!!

I thought the old lady was in the caravan when they burnt it Blush and yes I thought Dr Turner was offering to help sew the labels on Grin

MamaMary · 23/02/2015 21:57

Hear hear to not missing Jenny or Chummy at all. Both very wooden; and Jenny in particular an incredibly unsympathetic character: cold and smug. Good riddance indeed.

I did think the gypsy storyline was very saccharine, though: this series as a whole is far less realistic and less gritty than previous ones. It's clear the Beeb are simply making up stories now, not always convincingly.

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 23/02/2015 22:18

Anyone else caught wpc56 on in the afternoons? I think its from the same makers. Saw it today and the 'oo, look how far we've come'-ness of it reminded me of this thread Grin

iklboo · 23/02/2015 23:09

YY to Beeb making up the stories now. Season finale will be Sister Evagelina & Trixie delivering Neil Armstrong's baby in Apollo 11 while the doctor cures John Lennon's TB in time for the Abbey Road zebra crossing photo Smile

ShelaghTurner · 24/02/2015 00:15

I didn't think he'd sew the labels, he's not that good! But I thought it might be the introduction of the housekeeper but theyd already mentioned her by the time that scene came round (I'd seen the labels scene last week)

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 24/02/2015 04:06

Another person here who thought Dr Turner was going to sew labels. Stitches together wounds, doesn't he?

Attracta was also in that 4 part Titanic series which was 50% totally awesome and 50% utter shite. Beautiful lady.

Weebirdie · 24/02/2015 04:43

What a treat, Linda Basset, Smile Smile Smile

East is East. The best film ever made.

Trixie - does her drinking get worse?
