This was a charming little story - beautifully acted by Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench. Just the ticket for New Years evening.

Just watched it on iplayer, it was beautiful. Think I may watch it again with DD1.

Bakeoffcakes · 01/01/2015 22:35

I've just finished watching. It made me cry, was brilliant.

hmc · 01/01/2015 22:38

Lovely - was quite moved (difficult in my case)

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 01/01/2015 22:44

Only saw part of it as we hadn't realised it was on, will have to watch it on Iplayer. I don't think it will be the best thing this Christmas, it would be really hard to beat Marvellous - the biopic of Neil Baldwin on Christmas night, but it could easily be second.

DameDoom · 01/01/2015 23:16

Absolutely brilliant - they did Dahl proud. Want Mr Hoppy and Mrs Silver to adopt me. A fantastic festive treat.

R4roger · 02/01/2015 07:33

We were spoilt with that, wonderful dustin hoffman and judi dench on BBC Smile

winkywinkola · 02/01/2015 09:14

Loved this. I thought it was so uplifting. Dahl's 'bad guys' are always so amusing.

I really don't like James Corden at all so he annoyed me mildly.

DustBunnyFarmer · 02/01/2015 09:20

I'm glad this was good, as we recorded it to watch later today. We were watching Yonderland on catch up with the kids, followed by 2 episodes of True Detective (xmas box set) once they were in bed.

BestIsWest · 02/01/2015 09:23

We all loved it, including DS (17).

Fadingmemory · 02/01/2015 09:29

Absolutely lovely! Two highly versatile, hugely talented stars. Best Christmas TV by far.

waceystills · 02/01/2015 10:41

Lovely story and a fabulous adaptation.

Take note TV people, this is what we want!

GooodMythicalMorning · 02/01/2015 12:35

Watching it again with the kids. More for me than them.

elvesavleftdabildin · 02/01/2015 12:36

Loved it. Thank you, BBC.

R4roger · 02/01/2015 12:38

i wasnt going to watch it but I had caught Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench talking about it on Graham Norton, so glad i did.

5Foot5 · 02/01/2015 13:16

DD and I loved it. I haven't read the story but she has so was quite surprised when it appeared to be diverging from the original plot. We both were going "Awww!" at the end.

Mumzy · 02/01/2015 20:38

This and 'our zoo' has been dcs favorite Tv programmes in the last few months

Norfolkandchance1234 · 03/01/2015 00:23

We all loved it and I shed a few tears to boot. Lovely to watch.

Gatekeeper · 03/01/2015 14:48

ohh

just me then

I hated it; total miscasts...Judi Dench too old, too thin, Dustin Hoffman was NOT Mr Hoppy. Hated James Corden...unnecessary filling and adding to story

bigTillyMint · 03/01/2015 14:50

I only caught the end, which wasn't in the bookConfused

Must see if it is on catch-up.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 03/01/2015 14:54

I now have a wee crush on DH. It was lovely.

RudeBarbandCustard · 03/01/2015 16:43

I haven't read the book - how did the tv programme differ from the book, out of interest?

Deathraystare · 04/01/2015 00:41

Loved it. A rare good treat!

Trickytricky · 04/01/2015 20:13

I loved it! Not read the Roald Dahl story so will have to make sure I do. Judi Dench & Dustin Hoffman were so cute, DH and I both in tears at the end.

imip · 04/01/2015 21:22

Urgh, went to watch it today with dcs as I had recorded it, however, it didn't record. I couldn't find it on iplayer - anyone know if it will be shown again? Will I have have to wait until next Christmas!

EBearhug · 04/01/2015 22:27

It's here - www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04w5btr/roald-dahls-esio-trot

It's Roald Dahl's Esio Trot, not just Esio Trot.
