Because I don't. Not sure if it's because she reminds me of someone I didn't gel with or just her attitude

I disliked skylar from day 1 when she served Walt vegan 'bacon' for his birthday.

Not sure how the writers ever thought that was going to win her fans.

She's irritating and whiney. Not keen on Walt either.

I have some sympathy for Jesse.

I like Hank.

It took me a while to shake off Hal from MITM. It meant I was more sympathetic to Walt at first then I am now. I now think he is irredeemably bad and deserves his comeuppance.
Can't get rid of the image of that girl choking to death while Walt watched.

I don't think he is irredeemably bad. I think he is irredeemably selfish and I think he holds up a mirror to us as to what we would do if we had NOTHING to lose. I think initially his intentions were well meaning if misplaced. That changed throughout the course but I don't see him as evil or bad despite the fact that he had instances of badness.

I was v fond of Hank, didn't mind Skyler, wanted to look after Walt Jnr and absolutely adored Jesse Pinkman. Walter White was a fascinating character portrayed by an excellent actor, but God he gave me the creeps.

I have watched the entire series and Skylar just got more and more irritating. She speaks to Walt like he's a child not her husband. If she was a MNer she's be a regular flamee Grin

Yes thats it chippy she infantalises him, deciding what he eats, reminding him to take his echinea (sp?) taking over arrangements for his chemo, speaking to the doctors for him and the teeth itchingly patronising to him when she repeats exactly what the doctor has just said.

Watched the last two episodes tonight. A brilliant series

Couldn't stand hank. And felt almost maternal towards Jessie but the end. Was quite proud when he knuckled down to cooking properly lol

She got a lot of hate online (to the point of death threats against the actress Anna Gunn), but it's because of the way they wrote her, the way a lot of TV wives are written. The guy wants to go off and do exciting dangerous things, and the wives are the ones saying 'But think of your health, think of our children.' They just come off as nags.

What's great about breaking bad is that I loved characters I thought I'd hate, loved skinny Pete and badger and the humour they brought.

I also find it pure brilliance you are supposed to root for Walter at the beginning and not really like Jesse the annoying drug dealer kid but then the roles reverse in that jesse becomes the voice of reason and morals and you hate Walter

DH watched BB first (DD was tiny at the time and I didn't have the stomach for it). I finished it a couple of weeks ago and one observation I made is that all the characters are flawed and not very likeable. I did like Jesse in the end. Walt gets worse and worse to the point of being narcissistic - he's perfect, everyone else is stupid and irritating. I couldn't stand him by the end. I had some sympathy for Skyler but when she starts enabling Walt I lost it!

I wish I hadn't seen it so I could watch it all over again. Best TV in a long long time.

I didn't like the wife, not one bit.

If she had actually had a job at the beginning rather than be a lazy arse, her husband wouldn't have had to have 2 jobs and possibly would not have turned to a life of crime.

It was all her fault.

Report
Felina · 27/12/2014 15:21

It can't be all her fault - are you joking?

Report
ALittleFaith · 27/12/2014 15:26

I assumed she stopped working to support Walt Jnr when he was little and never got round to going back to work. Saying it's all her fault is victim blaming! He's an abusive narcissist! He had choices. He made bad ones because by his own admission, he enjoyed it. I didn't really like Sky but it's not her fault.

Report
Bartlebee · 27/12/2014 15:31

I was joking, of course.

But I am just a bit incredulous, that in yet another US show, the woman has no role other than being a housewife.

It struck me as odd that Sky didn't work but Marie did. I've have imagined it the other way around!

I don't like Skylar either. I like Jesse and I love Saul but don't really like anyone else.
Love the series though. I've just started the last season and I actually surprised myself by how shocked I was when I realised how low Walt would go. I don't normally get so emotionally involved in TV!
I won't give anything away but people who've seen it probably know what I mean.

I do think Sky is a control freak and makes walt's illness all about her somehow.

Best TV series EVER! The characters are all flawed and show both humanity and selfishness and, some, even evil. I didn't like Hank much at first, but he becomes a much more complex and likeable character towards the end - I ended up loving him! As other posters have said, you end up loving characters you thought you'd hate and disliking those you may have started out rooting for. Skinny Pete and badger added a bit of light comedy relief and Gomie is ma homie Grin He and Hank are the only characters, other than Marie and Walt jr, that never compromise their morals.

I don't want to spoil anything so won't say anymore, but I'd also love to watch it all again with new eyes. The scriptwriters did an amazing job of showing how good intentions can lead you down a road to hell and how, in the right circumstances, anybody is capable of anything.

I think she was a control freak precisely because she didnt work/have purpose other than mother/wife. Her home, child and husband were her 'job' and so she made it all run like a well oiled machine, she perfected it and managed it. She didnt have work or a social life so literally had nothing else to control in her life so thats why all her energies went to making her family life as perfect as she could. Anyone who has watched it all will see that her controlling behaviours lessen a bit when she has bigger concerns outside of the home.

Bartlebee · 27/12/2014 16:03

But honestly, it transpires she is an accountant or at least, a bookeeper and yet her husband is expected to supplement their household income by working in a crappy carwash while she half heartedly sells the odd bit of tat on EBay? I was indignant on Walt's behalf.

The only one I rooted for was Hank, and Walt, a bit.

I still loved it though.
