Dramatised by Andy Watts

With Shane Richie, Pauline Collins and Roger Lloyd Pack in the cast, you'd be fairly safe to assume this is a comedy drama. But it's not. In fact this story, based on the novel of the same name by John Harding, is poignant to the point of being depressing. Nick (Richie, with a slightly different haircut from EastEnders' Alfie Moon but otherwise not discernibly different) is taking his wife and parents on holiday to Malta, where his dad, who has Parkinson's (a tour de force performance from Lloyd Pack, whose dialogue consists of unintelligible mutterings and the occasional yell of "Toilet!"), was stationed during the war. It turns out his dad has another reason to be on the island. The cast are terrific, the locations are lovely and there are scenes that will move you to tears - but not of laughter.

Fell asleep during this, how did it end? Saw up to where the "brother" ran off with the money.
Couldn't understand why the father was portrayed in such a way with Parkinsons - didn't think that affected the brain, just mobility, probably wrong though, usually am

FIMBOnABroomstick · 09/10/2006 15:55

I thought it was quite depressing actually.

leander · 09/10/2006 15:59

I too would like to know the end. I fell asleep but the last thing I remember was the mum hitting the dad when he wouldn't take his pills.

Naughtynoonoo · 09/10/2006 16:00

I have sky plussed it, is it worth watching or shall I just delete?

leander · 09/10/2006 16:03

well I quite liked it but it couldnt have been that good if I fell asleep before the end

leander · 09/10/2006 17:19

does nobody know how this ended?

TheBlairAitchProject · 09/10/2006 17:31

unbe-blody-lievably. are you sure you want me to tell you? i wouldn't have watched it had i not been paid to.

ScummyMummy · 09/10/2006 17:32

Shane Ritchie took the dad swimming and the dad asked him to let him go and said it was his wish. S Richie did as requested. The dad floated out to sea. The credits rolled.

Some interesting issues but not that great imo. I'd delete, nnn!

Yeah the son (Shane Richie) got the money back from the ?Brother?.
The Brother went back to Sicily where he was actually from.
The Mother, Father, son and his wife all go down to the beach.
The Father goes for a swim with the son. The son is holding the father laid on his back floating on the water when the dad asks him to let him go ? he does ? pan out shot of son watching dad float out into the med ? roll credits!!!!

TheBlairAitchProject · 09/10/2006 17:55

and let's not forget the touching scene where shane ritchie wiped trigger's arse and they had the father-son moment that richie's character had long dreamed of. no really, trigger was crying and everything.
still, i thought the performances were actually quite impressive. direction was awful, that's why everyone fell asleep.
