Anyone watching? I must say they had high quality vicars back in the 50s, I'm not too sure how much attention the female congregation at least would have been paying to the Rev's sermons.

However, I am wondering a bit why a vicar would have made a hobby of sending people to the gallows.

I'm really enjoying it! Love the gay curate with the pencil moustache. I also see they are trying to shoehorn in as many topless vicar scenes as possible... eh who's complaining! :-)

James Norton is very luscious and his unrequited yearning skills are rather impressive. As for 'bland and innoffensive' I'd say it's been rather spiced up - I had assumed as it was period vicar stuff it would be very safe for teatime viewing with the DCs pootling around in the background and then lo-and-behold, we have shagging in the first half! And the posh party group in the second episode were rather more lewd in conversation than one might expect of the period, possibly? But I'm sticking with it to see how that yearning pans out.

Thought it was a great episode tonight. Lots of fascinating characters, some interesting background plot development, particularly Hildegard coming back and Leonard's character and situation. Good murder storyline too. And Sidney looking, speaking and acting as lovely as ever .... bliss. Wink

I have just caught up with the narration of 'Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death' which has been repeated on Radio 4 extra (available on iPlayer). It was the first episode of the TV series - murder of the solicitor. I preferred the radio version - no extra characters and the narration explained what was going on! There certainly has been tweaking for TV.

Yes but on the radio you can't see the beautiful vicarWink. I think the series has developed nicely from a slow start although I still maintain it's Sunday night viewing.

I have some questions!
First I thought he was a priest, else why else can't he have the girl he wants?
I'm sure he said the word priest in an early episode.
But he's a vicar, so he could have AManda?
Then what's all the yearning about? They love each other

hattymattie · 13/11/2014 16:04

I have the same questions!

He is definitely a vicar but I think Amanda just went for money and social prestige.

I am loving this. James Norton is fabulous, I love the drinking vicar, unrequited love thing. It's darker than it seems. I fear James Norton won't stick around for long though, he's meant for bigger things that one.

I think he's too messed up by the war and doesn't think he can offer her anything. There's that bit where he says "why are you marrying him?" (Guy) and she says "because HE asked!". Meaning she couldn't wait for Sidney any longer.
