extreme commutes - isle of wight lady

can't belive the commute she does daily, isle of wight to london tottenham court road, 3 hours! well done her i am incredibly impressed! (and wonder what she does for a living)

I'd do it for 2 days then ring in sick!!

I know someone who does this,not to TCR but to another part of central London. She's not in a superbly well-paid occupation but it's not badly paid.

I remember when I was a student temping in London many years ago and one of the permanent staff used to do this - IOW to oxford circus every day.

She was absolutely driven and pretty scary in her condemnation of all students

I was wondering how it would work once she had to factor in nursery and school! I can barely cope and I drop mine in the village before 30min commute!

I feel sorry for her little girl

I was about the man who cycles 28 miles to work then 28 miles back home.........

My Dh used to do a 2.5 hr commute each way, he did it for 6 years. I didn't see the programme , what channel was it on?

I do 1.5 hours each way...

and a 11 hour day..

That is long enough!

A colleague does Isle of Wight to Oxford

We live on the Island and were a bit [shocked]. She spent £700 a month on travel,wouldn't it make more sense to take a pay cut and get a job closer? Mind you I'm guessing she had free childcare. Thought it was a bit tough on her little girl too.

I do an hour each way and that's a killer. I'd rather live in the office than so what she did - and her poor daughter. I honestly can't think of a job that would be worth it.

And twice a week I take my ds (who is 2) on the journey. He's really good going on the train on a morning but he's definitely had enough by home time and that's at 5.30, not after 8pm like them!

I did wonder why the hell she lived on the IOW if her childcare was in Southampton and work in London. Seemed mad, surely there are places that are as cheap to live between IOW and London that would reduce her commute? I suppose if it was 2d a week, it is easier/more understandable.

Also thought the bloke who commuted to Glasgow looked like a Spitting Image puppet - totally irrelevant to the programme but there you go. Also, the prog said he owned 18 businesses between his home in Mull and Glasgow, so it struck me as fairly unlikely that was a regular, daily commute for him, more like a once weekly commute (if that). He is likely to have managers in overseeing the day to day running of his 18 businesses that don't necessitate him being on site day in, day out.

The real amazing one (for me) was the chap from Buxton, cycling almost 300miles a week as a commute, over incredibly hilly and exposed terrain in all weathers for years.

I've just watched this. I can't believe she does that commute every day.

The ones going into London (driving and the trains) were typical of a,m commuters, my dh does the train each day. I do t think one week goes by when there isn't train trouble!

I didn't see this show, but I met someone at a meeting in London once who commuted daily from Doncaster, which I thought was barmy.

When Ryanair used to fly to Newquay, I briefly considered moving to Cornwall (for the surfing and the sea) and commuting to London for work every day, which would have been theoretically possible and the flights were genuinely cheap at the time.

I think they have stopped now so I am very glad I saw sense!

I've just watched the lunchtime repeat and was surprised at the lady from the IOW. It looked like one of those arrangements made of a house of cards - one false move and it could fall apart. I suspect it wouldn't be sustainable once her DD is of school age. Where would she go to school? And who would pick her up if she was ill?!

I would love to know if the lady who lives on the Isle of Wight and works
in London, dropping her daughter off with her mother in Southampton
on the way, gets up at 5 am and gets home at 8pm still does this
commute! I often think of her if I wake up at 5 am on a cold winter
