We are often shown the doctor via the stories including the earth and/or his companions, so there's lots of adventures/travels we don't see that are hinted at. Those might include more non-human companions.

Captain Jack was human, but not from earth IIRC, wasn't there at thing when they first met him where the Doctor explained to Rose that as humans often went a long time between seeing another human, they had much more flexibile sexuality to make up for lack of opportunity....

I liked Perkins, it would be nice to have a male companion who wasn't a partner of a female companion (who's really always the main one), and an older person would allow for a bit more of an equal.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 21:28

Some of the Eighth Doctor companions weren't earthlings, I think?

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 21:29

Companions are also largely lfrom the viewer's era (again, except jack)

Nerf · 12/10/2014 22:49

Okay, the Galifree thing. I thought he'd give back and saved it ? Hidden it away? So it's not his fault anymore, so why does he care if he's good?
Capt Jack was lush.
Ok, budget and relate - ability.

Sure, he saved it but first he took the decision to destroy it. Eleven and Twelve are aware of both, in believe.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/10/2014 23:33

Oh I'd like a companion from a different era I think, that would be really interesting.

gamescompendium · 12/10/2014 23:55

I may have squealed at the jellybabies this week, DH looked confused, I don't think he realises how serious that is for our relationship but since he let me watch Doctor Who in bed with gin after we'd had a rare night out (to the pictures to see What We Did on our Holiday, two Scottish doctors in one night, could it get any better?) I'll give him a second chance.

RustyDalek · 18/10/2014 21:55

I agree that it would be good to have companions from a different era - they were much more common in the Classic series!

Starting with the doctor's grandaughter, Susan, with the first two doctors we had Vicki, Stephen, Sara Kingdom and Zoe from the earth's future, Katarina from the fall of Troy, Jamie from 18th century Scotland and Victoria from the 1860’s - so 8 non-contemporary-Earth companions, as against 5 'present-day' ones (Ian, Barbara, Dodo, Ben and Polly)

The third Doctor only had contemporary Earth companions, but then he was confined to contemporary Earth for most of the time!

The Fourth doctor had Leela who was descended from human settlers on another planet, Adric who was from ESpace and Nyssa who was from Traken as well as Time Lady Romana. The last two also travelled with the fifth doctor, as did Turlough, from the planet Trion.

The Sixth and Seventh doctors companions (Peri, Mel and Ace) all came from modern Earth, though he met Ace on another planet and it was never adequately explained where Mel came from.

The Eighth Doctor had several companions in the Expanded Whoniverse of novels and audio adventures, including the edwardian Charley
and the alien C'rizz, and some of them were mentioned in the prequel to the 50th special, giving them 'canonicity' (if that's even a word...)

You have to stop with the PC love. My boss is tall, skinny, curly haired (but darker than PC is these days) and Scottish. I have had more than one conversation at work about how women of a certain age over 40 are... conflicted... about the new Doctor.

Monroe · 19/10/2014 21:49

I enjoyed that one. But then again I'm easily pleased, miss the majority of the things everyone else picks up on and pretty much love all the doctors Smile

It's probably nothing but I keep noticing referencing to listening this series. Although maybe it's because of the last series being all about the silence I have noticed it more. That and the trailer of the doctor sat on top of the trailer menacingly saying "listen" Grin

YonicScrewdriver · 19/10/2014 22:10

It was v good.

Nerf · 19/10/2014 22:19

I liked it but I was a bit Confused that the doctor waved the screwdriver around and got rid of them: why couldn't Clara if it was that easy?
Also what is the plan for Clara that the weird Heaven woman has? And when can we ditch Danny the control freak?

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 19/10/2014 22:29

It wasn't the screwdriver alone, was it? It was screwdriver plus tardis shields.

Plus you'd have to hope the sonic works better for the doctor than Clara as he's cleverer and it has telepathic controls.

Monroe · 19/10/2014 22:30

I know, I think we missed half an episode which showed the doctor figuring out how to defeat them.

Danny does seem surplus to requirements. I loved Micky and Rory but Danny just seems a bit wet

MrsCakesPrecognition · 20/10/2014 01:56

Two thoughts...

  1. First we have Frank Skinner's railway engineer, now we have the helpful train driver. And at the end of this week's episode, when the driver said something about thinking he had come out ahead because he had been in the tardis and was still alive, DW gave home a very odd look like he had a momentary sense of deja vu.
  2. Are we having a bit of a "children's literature" moment? Alice in Wonderland this week, Little Red Riding Hood next week?

Hmmm. Lots of echoes at the moment, perhaps that is what we are listening for?

confuddledDOTcom · 20/10/2014 12:18

what was with the Shakespeare Code type comment "I name you Boneless!" he seemed to reference another episode but I've forgotten the comment. How many past episodes have they referenced now without outright saying it? girl in the fireplace, Shakespeare Code, Empty Child any more? they're all SM episodes too...

I do wonder if all the listen comments are telling us to pick up on clues they're giving.

RustyDalek · 20/10/2014 13:07

It was 'I name you Carrionite'

confuddledDOTcom · 20/10/2014 15:59

rusty, it was in Shakespeare Code (I have it on sky+ as I have two autistic Whovians who love that one) but Saturday it was I name you boneless.

YonicScrewdriver · 20/10/2014 16:05

Maybe missy is Stephen moffat!

RustyDalek · 20/10/2014 17:29

Yes - sorry, I thought you meant you'd forgotten the actual comment in the Shakepeare Code. Just re-read and realised that's not what you meant...

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/10/2014 18:01

Boneless - that makes more sense!

We thought he said bolus (couple of biologists watching...).

confuddledDOTcom · 20/10/2014 21:36

polka I have hearing problems so watch with subs on. I would have missed it otherwiseWink

Nerf · 20/10/2014 21:54

Oh I thought it was bolus. What's Shakespeare code?

The one with the climax in the Globe theatre.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 21/10/2014 10:34

hello! Can I join you?

Sorry, don't have time to go back through all of the thread (threads?) but have we discussed Missy much yet? I reckon she's the TARDIS and she's preparing to build a new Dr when this one dies...
