I had no idea he wrote "Let Me Go" about his daughter Poppy until that programme . Googled the lyrics and it makes sense now.

CorporateRockWhore · 06/05/2014 19:59

The sycophancy was astounding. Singing along to your own songs in the car. All closed eyes and getting right into it. Just no.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 06/05/2014 20:02

Thanks Dame. Will download it from iPlayer.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/05/2014 20:03

I presumed it was a mickey take from The Gavin and Stacey with Uncle Bryn singing in the car.

If he had sat there all po faced he'd have looked an uptight twat.

CorporateRockWhore · 06/05/2014 20:05

Maybe; if that's the case I didn't spot it at the time. Not convinced! Grin

EffectiveCommunication · 06/05/2014 20:14

I would like to watch the whole thing, I only saw some of it. From the bit I saw Garry did appear humbled by the hard times he has had. I like his music.

TSSDNCOP · 06/05/2014 21:15

Just watched.

Not a great GB fan and find JC a PITA.

BUT...

I found it riveting. How shit it must have been to be GB during those years when he was a fat, has-been joke. I'm amazed he wasn't broken and that he can be so, outwardly at least, over it now. He must wake up at night in a sweat that he's back there.

Fair play to the man and his family and friends.

Vivacia · 06/05/2014 21:46

The singing in the car was Corden's joke - they were just having a sing-song and taking the Micky out of themselves!

Barlow's humility and grace watching some of the vitriolic videos was admirable. I hope that the Little Britain comedians (forget their names) feel ashamed.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 06/05/2014 22:20

Watching it now.

Angelto5 · 07/05/2014 17:02

Really enjoyed this prog-also didn't know that he wrote "let me go" abt his daughter poppy.its a brilliant song. Always thought Gary was the talent of take that. SmileGrin

Ellenora5 · 08/05/2014 00:52

I just watched it tonight, I thought it was very good, like others I didn't know what he went through all those years ago, but I wasn't a fan then, I admire him for coming back and doing what he did and he has achieved so much, like one of the contributors to the programme said, you don't know what it is you have lost until it is gone (or something like that) and that makes you come back stronger, and I also realised that some songs I have loved over the past few years I didn't even know he had sang let alone write, so fair play to him, and his wife by the way, they must be mad about each other to have got through all that together and that was before they had such a tragedy in their lives

MikeLitoris · 08/05/2014 17:09

I've just caught up and am a crying mess.

I was a teen a the height of take that but wasn't a huge fan. I didn't realise how bad the press was to him.

And the meaning behind 'let me go' :(

The wedding was just lovely.

It doesn't seem fashionable to say it on mumsnet but I really do like Gazza.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 08/05/2014 19:54

I like him too. He is just normal, and was forced to try to be a sex-symbol when he was nothing of the sort. That's why he was so easy to take the mickey out of.

He has aged really well.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 08/05/2014 22:21

Well if you are a fan of them together, you also need to waych this

I really want them to do a charity single together!

OwlCapone · 09/05/2014 06:54

I didn't realise how bad the press was to him.

It wasn't just the press was it? The way he described shop keepers deliberately going to put Robbie songs on when he came into a shop was pure bullying. No wonder he didnt leave the house!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/05/2014 13:06

No, but I don't think the public would have been so nasty unless the press egged them on.

I don't know how he can bare to work with Robbie or even speak to him tbh after all that. He's a nicer person than I am! Thank goodness he has a strong marriage.

OP posts:
OwlCapone · 09/05/2014 13:55

I think, to a certain extent, Robbie was egged on by the press and was reacting to having been "the fat talentless one" in the group. I guess they've managed to sort all that crap out.

Figster · 09/05/2014 13:56

I'm watching it now his career his on the downward slide it's heartbreaking Sad

Figster · 09/05/2014 14:07

Bless corden he's such a fan boy!!

Eminybob · 09/05/2014 15:12

Just watched it on catch up after reading this thread.

I am sat sobbing my heart out over the ending though. I had never before associated the lyrics to let me go with the loss of Gary's daughter Poppy, and I'm not sure now I'll ever be able to hear that song again without crying.

Brilliant documentary though.

MikeLitoris · 09/05/2014 15:25

That's what I thought owl I think Robbie knew he was always guaranteed a laugh and some air time when he was slagging Gary off. It was probably a massive relief to not be the butt of the the medias jokes for a change.

Hats off to Gary for being so forgiving.

Agree on the lyrics to let me go. So moving.

GatoradeMeBitch · 09/05/2014 19:16

I remember laughing along at the time, Barlow was a massive joke. Really he's done fantastically well to come back and then become as big as he is.

GatoradeMeBitch · 09/05/2014 19:17

But that bride was very fortunate that her wedding took place during the filming of his documentary, because I highly doubt he'd have turned up without a camera crew!

handcream · 09/05/2014 19:21

I loved Gary turning up at the wedding. We all love a story where someone has come back from the dead. And isn't he handsome these days, much better than before IMHO.

EffectiveCommunication · 10/05/2014 08:54

I see Gary has been hit by a massive tax bill, ouch!
