I thought it was brilliant, although some generational shifts confused me. The lead character played by Sarah Lancashire had a grandson but didn't look old enough.

The company boss had been friends with the accountant's father, that didn't add up did it? Or did I get that wrong.

Great to see the George Costigan and Siobhan Finneran reunited although not onscreen together.

Brilliant writing and simply superb acting I thought, anybody else enjoy it?

I hope Sarah Lancashire gets a BAFTA for this!

I realised that I'd been holding my breath throughout whole scenes!

The murder of the police officer was so brutal and shocking.

LatinForTelly · 14/05/2014 17:26

Did the young police officer last night say on the walkie-talkie, 'I think they've killed me'? Jeez that was sad. And brilliant writing.

It was absolutely brutal. I watched the bit with Sarah Lancashire in the house through my fingers. Part of me is only watching it now to see that bastard get his come-uppance. (He better had.) It's very dark. But the acting is very good.

This programme is fantastic. I didn't think I'd like it much, but it's my telly highlight of the week. The bit in the first episode where SL describes to the teacher about what happened her daughter was superb. I was in tears.
The guy running over the policeman last night was truly horrible. DH was saying it's been ages since he was truly shocked at a TV death- even the gruesome uber violent ones seem less shocking that the sound that car made.

OneStepCloser · 14/05/2014 17:42

It'll teach not to read up on what I'm watching Grin I saw the word happy, saw Sarah Lancashire and thought it would be cosy Blush

I'm terrified it's not going to have a happy ending, that poor boy is totally she'll shocked at what he's been dragged into, and Ryan just breaks my heart with the 'Granddad' Sad

OneStepCloser · 14/05/2014 17:43

Rouge 'not' in there.

GypsyFloss · 14/05/2014 17:44

I think it is superb, brutal and honest with fantastic acting from SL and the rest of the cast. I watch it with my DD and commented last that I thought that Ashley has a hidden streak of badness. She reckons that he's got nothing on Tommy who is evil personified albeit in a very handsome face.

Olddear · 14/05/2014 17:48

Absolutely loving this! I rarely watch this kind of thing, but I can't wait to find out what happens. Yes, it's dark and violent, but it's fantastic writing, really gripping and great acting from everybody! The actor playing Tommy is very good at playing this horrible, menacing character, excellent stuff!

Another one here who thinks its brilliant.

I watched last nights episode either through my fingers or through tears.

mrsminiverscharlady · 14/05/2014 18:18

I'm really loving this series, it's gripped me more than anything else I've watched in ages. I don't actually think it's that grim or violent, but then I'm a Scandi Noir fan so perhaps I've been desensitised!

The scene with Ryan talking about his grandad made me sob like a baby Blush

Ledkr · 14/05/2014 21:13

Just watching episide 3 with a beating heart, it's brilliant but awful. Dh is a copper so but close to home.

PuppyMummy · 15/05/2014 07:01

I think this is really good too. Although horrible!

I really hope they work out the kidnap before Ann ends up gettin killed too. im hoping the 'nicer' kidnapper will help her...

MorrisZapp · 15/05/2014 08:56

This gets harder to watch each week, but the acting and writing are simply compelling. I thought SL reached new highs in this one, particularly near the end when she tried to draw the woman out on the phone. 'Is somebody stopping you from talking to me?', such a clever question.

The way she dealt with her sister and her grandson at the same time.

I found the moor scenes difficult, but Kirsten at least had a very strong scene to herself before being brutalised.

Very hard now to see how we can get three more episodes as strong and development-packed as the first ones have been. I cannot wait to see them.

I'm enjoying Fargo on Channel 4, but this is even more compelling.

And so, so glad to see Anne finally breathing and using her intelligence instead of being a squirming sack of fear. Please can we keep it like this, there's been enough brutal sacrifice of innocence already.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/05/2014 09:30

Good Lord, aren't you allowed to be a squirming sack of fear if you've been kidnapped and raped? I know my intelligence would've gone out of the window the minute I was bundled into the back of a van!

MorrisZapp · 15/05/2014 09:37

It wasn't a criticism of the kidnap victim! I was slightly criticising the writing/ plot in offering us this young female effectively as an object, with no identity or will.

I feel a bit a bit uncomfortable with that tbh. I was so glad to see her given her identity back, by the writers.

But that's EXACTLY how the woman was seen by the men, as a 'thing' they could use however they wanted. I doubt there are many feminist kidnappers out there tbhWink Grin

It would just be so satisfying if Anne could exert influence herself in how it all plays out. I get that rapists aren't known for their radical feminism :) but as a telly viewer I think the writers have the power to show us Anne as a person, as well as a helpless victim.

Lewis is going to have to do something very very quickly or else he will be just as bad as Tommy, for standing by as violence is committed. He doesn't have long, and is deep in shit as it is.

everlong I think Tommy will talk to Ashley and make the case for killing Lewis the way he did about Anne. I hope not. Obviously he's not innocent but he really didn't know the way it was going to turn out and is very damaged by the actions of Tommy.

The story isn't really about Anne though imo, it's about all the other characters. I think that's why there hasn't been much focus on her.

Ooo can't wait until next weekGrin
