I thought it was brilliant, although some generational shifts confused me. The lead character played by Sarah Lancashire had a grandson but didn't look old enough.

The company boss had been friends with the accountant's father, that didn't add up did it? Or did I get that wrong.

Great to see the George Costigan and Siobhan Finneran reunited although not onscreen together.

Brilliant writing and simply superb acting I thought, anybody else enjoy it?

I guess it'll all about the fallout & people trying to save their necks.

Kev & Nev won't be friends anymore that's for sure.

Although Kev might try the "I was just talking about work" line though that falls down because he went to the police & he has money.

Ashley will be giving up what he knows about drug dealers-will that be someone in the police?

TLR will be trying to get to Ryan.

Oh my goodness!

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 23/05/2014 11:16

I don't think Kev can possibly get away with it, the police will be able to tell he didn't drop the money off at the Services, they have cctv.

I thought it was interesting the way the wife was initially horrified, but then gradually you see the £££ signs light up in her eyes and she suggests spending the money. Money can do strange things to people.

Kaluki · 23/05/2014 12:44

I think that the caravan park man (can't remember his name) deliberately told Kev not to go to the drop off points so he could incriminate him later if needed. If they can't find him on the CCTV it will prove he's involved.

bleedingheart · 23/05/2014 16:29

Yes, I think the CCTV evidence of the drop offs (or lack thereof) will be the undoing of Kev.

It's really got under my skin! Keep thinking about Catherine's face and Ann screaming at her from the police car.

GypsyFloss · 23/05/2014 19:23

It was Cath's buckled or even broken legs that got to me.

There is something about Nev that I'm not sure about...I wonder if he has his finger in the drug pie, from a top down perspective.

He is quite smarmy and not quite as distraught as I would imagine him to be. Maybe, if he is involved in the trade, he has always thought something like this might happen.

Deux · 23/05/2014 19:43

I was wondering about the councillor SL arrested and whether he wouold be woven into the story.

I can't help thinking that SL is going to be betrayed or badly let down by those close to her.

Maybe he does. Ashley seems to do good poker face.

mistymeanour · 23/05/2014 20:35

I think Catherine's ex will write about the councillor getting caught with drugs (which have been "damaged" by the police to quash the charge) and Catherine will be in big trouble and maybe even lose her job (as she was the leak).

The last scenes were spinetingling - Anne screaming "get in the car" etc.

I have been so surprised by this series. The music at the start makes you think it's going to be light hearted drama and I thought the first episode was a bit slow and that the kidnap idea was just ridiculous - but wow this is absolutely compelling now.

Icimoi · 24/05/2014 00:27

I do find Joe Armstrong a very watchable actor. I saw him with his father playing father and son in Henry IV Part 2, and it was a brilliant pairing.

diddl · 24/05/2014 07:58

Joe Armstrong is fab, isn't he?

I find him mesmerising!

A very good friend recommended this to me and DH, didn't give us any details just said it was excellent, so we downloaded the first four episodes and watched it last night.

Well there was I expecting a sort of updated Heartbeatish type thing...

Like other posters I think this is an excellent drama, really gripping, compulsive if difficult viewing.

The murder of the young policewoman was just evisceratingly awful, the sound of the car going over her was dreadful, I couldn't get that scene out of my mind all last night. Also the final scene of episode four, gut-wrenching. I was screaming at the TV too, and I mistakenly thought that was the last episode so relieved (in a bizarre way) that there are two more to go, hopefully all the loose ends will be tied up, and come-uppances galour will be meted out.

I think all the characters are well drawn and the acting is terrific.

The scene with Ryan at the famly dinner and the words of his granddad afterwards were so sad, how could anyone blame that poor child.

As for Kevin and his wife, I want to do him serious damage when he keeps saying "I can't do that it's money" FFS!! Commented to DH that if he came home and told me about a kidnap plot for money, my first reaction would be to call the police, second a solicitor for a divorce. I mean really, Kevin's wife, really???

I wonder what shocks and twist and turns we're in for next week.

fuckinglondonballs · 24/05/2014 19:17

Just caught up with this.

Interesting interview with Sally Wainwright in today's Observer. There might be a second series.

Agree that Tommy doesn't look right - a bit too Jack Wills. irl he would be a lot more,.... well, ...skanky.

I like the other young guy - he is a good actor.- the other baddie that Tommy thinks is weak, you know the one? young guy but with dark hair.

SL - very annoying voice, and not convincing at all, somehow. Her sister, however, is brill. And the scenes between the two of them are convincing, there is a chemistry there. I end up engaging with SL during the scenes with her sister, which suggests the actor playing the sister has something special.

Anne does crying and whimpering very well. However, i want to see a MALE do crying and whimpering very well. Could Nev have not had a son rather than a daughter to get kidnapped? I'm well fed up with violence to females for titillation.

And finally - if you think this is good, watch Breaking Bad.

Please.

Watch Breaking Bad. There is a lot of violence in it, but not fetishised violence to women.

emotionsecho · 26/05/2014 23:16

NigellasGuest I don't agree that the violence against women depicted in Happy Valley is titillation, and there has been a fair amount of violence and menace dished out to men as well. Judging by the reaction of people to the the programme we are not de-sensitised nor titillated.

CateBlanket · 27/05/2014 03:05

Agreed.

Sally Wainwright should be ashamed of herself for writing this drama. And all the women on this thread who find it so "compelling" are making me sick.
