I thought it was brilliant, although some generational shifts confused me. The lead character played by Sarah Lancashire had a grandson but didn't look old enough.

The company boss had been friends with the accountant's father, that didn't add up did it? Or did I get that wrong.

Great to see the George Costigan and Siobhan Finneran reunited although not onscreen together.

Brilliant writing and simply superb acting I thought, anybody else enjoy it?

"She may have blamed him because he had already been put away for raping someone else. "

I thought that he went away for drugs.

When Catherine & her sister were talking about him didn't the sister say "but that's not what he went away for".

Also, did he actually rape Anne?

Not that that doesn't take away from him being absolutely despicable!

And the other two agreeing to let him kill Anne-really??

ILikeToClean · 22/05/2014 15:09

Wasn't the "estranged" son the one whose wife is pregnant, they went round for dinner and had to take Ryan and that was when he started on about his grandad. So don't think they're strictly estranged but son and wife don't want anything to do with Ryan, or am I getting confused?

No, that's right Clean.

Think I'm getting confused & thinking of the monologue in Ep1 when she said that she had a son who didn't speak to her.

And I think it was Richard who didn't want Ryan there.

Southeastdweller · 22/05/2014 16:42

I recall that the son and his girlfriend didn't want Ryan there as well as Richard.

diddl · 22/05/2014 16:45

Wasn't sure if they didn't want him there because Richard didn't, or if it would take the edge off their announcement.
Sadeither way!

ILikeToClean · 22/05/2014 17:10

I don't think any of them wanted him there Hmm poor Ryan.

Interesting theories about Richard being his dad too...

Roll on next week!

GypsyFloss · 22/05/2014 18:21

I don't want Richard to be his Dad.

I agree Deux Tommy's handsomeness is an excellent off-set to his evilness.

flamineckpip · 22/05/2014 20:58

Now that would be a cruel but interesting twist if Richard was Ryan's dad.
MorrisZapp I laughed at your comment about TLR. I would too...

Southeastdweller · 22/05/2014 21:05

I just rewatched this weeks episode as I was confused about some comments. When Cath tells Clare (Siobhan Finneran) that TLR's mother has been told that he's the father, Clare is genuinely shocked. Also Clare tells Cath that TLR may be able to prove that he is Ryan's father so as far as Clare knows TLR is his father...then again I suppose this doesn't mean that Becky was only having sex or was raped by one man, TLR.

If Cath survives I think she'll try to kill TLR or Richard, if either is Ryan's father. Also think that someone else is going to get murdered...

I wonder if Kev and his missus might get bumped off , organised by Ashley as they know the whole story...

MorrisZapp me too. My 17 yr old daughter rather likes him too. There is something sad disconcerting about fancying someone who your child also fancies. Apparently he's got a theology degree from Cambridge which adds to his handsome gorgeousness Grin

flamineckpip · 22/05/2014 21:55

If anyone else has to get murdered I hope it is Kev's wife. She is awful.

GypsyFloss I read about him having a degree from Cambridge too, along with being an ex boarding school pupil. I thought he looked like a public schoolboy the first time I saw him. Your 17 year old daughter has good taste. As do we

MasqueradeWaltzer · 22/05/2014 23:18

Just caught up with this on iPlayer and my god! It has gripped me in the way I wanted Broadchurch to, but never quite did.

Sarah Lancashire must win a(nother) Bafta for this, surely.

I was SO pleased Ann was released this episode. I'm relieved the whole kidnapping thing is over, and looking forward even more to what follows. Generation War on BBC4 the other week is the only thing that's engaged me to the same extent in ages.

Ellenora5 · 23/05/2014 00:12

Well after getting over all my confusion about the characters in the beginning and probably driving you all mad about it I decided to record episode 2,3,4, and I have now watched them all, I think it is brilliant, very gripping, my heart was thumping when Catherine went into the cellar and found Ann, and when he came in I nearly screamed at them, my god he is a vicious creature and I hope that Catherine is not dead

I don't get why some of you think that Richard is Ryans father, have I missed something Confused

God, I watched this on catch up last night and am still thinking about it now.
I agree SL is amazing in this and should win a bafta.
She's so convincing.

Helpys · 23/05/2014 07:41

Squeeeee!
I thought it was over! I even decided they'd ended it on a cliffhanger before deciding whether to commission a second series or not.
It was so good. Passed the Bechmel test. And I really loved the way SL switched to procedural work mode, so realistic but so rarely seen in drama.
And there's 2 more episodes. Fab.

Ledkr · 23/05/2014 07:49

Only thing was I think she'd have called for back up before venturing into the cellar, dh is a copper and agreed.

Southeastdweller · 23/05/2014 08:15

Kevin is such a knob. I felt like slapping him when his wife asked him in this weeks episode why he came up with the kidnap idea in the first place and he replied that it was because Nevinson wouldn't give him a bit more money! In an entitled, self-pitying way tone of voice. Dickhead.

it's not real

it's not real

GypsyFloss · 23/05/2014 09:31

Yes to calling for back-up and a big yes to Kevin being a knib. He's caused mayhem and I hope he comes a cropper. Even if he tries to keep quiet I reckon SL has his card marked. Obviously we just need her to stay alive long enough to do something about it/ him.

Upthread a few people were commenting that they were glad the kidnap/ violent bit was over. Is it just me then who is worrying about TLR coming out and finishing them off in the road?

bleedingheart · 23/05/2014 09:54

I was worrying he'd come out too.
I don't think anything has affected me like this in a long time.
So well-acted.

I do not understand the attraction of the actor playing Tommy though? Mid-90s bleached hair and washed out skin? Although public school boys have never been my thing.

They're about to discuss this on women's hour R4, ref depictions of violence on women.

CarCiKoTab · 23/05/2014 10:18

Only 4 more days until our theories are put right. Am I the only one who thinks it could potentially go anyway, in my eyes there has been so many twists already. The Richard been the dad theory that would be something! I don't see the attraction with TLR I even said to my DP if I seen him walking along the street I'd be tempted to drop kick him into next week! It's not real although very convincing.

I think that TLR will do a runner there would be too many witnesses if he came out although I was scared that would happen. I hope SL is OK! I felt it was a little to easy finding Anne considering they were only told about her disappearance the day before something has got to throw a nail in the works, bearing in mind there is two more episodes left. I really don't know. I have a feeling that something drastic will happen.
